Our Under-18s came from behind to win on their travels in their
penultimate away game of the campaign.
Marcus Rashford's penalty put the hosts ahead after just seven minutes but
the Blues responded strongly and a second-half own goal plus a
stoppage-time winner from Miro Muheim gave them all three points.
Joe Edwards's side move to within two points of league leaders Man United
with a game in hand and two games of the season remaining.
== Team news ==
Edwards made three changes from the side that beat West Brom a fortnight
previously, with Dujon Sterling, Ruben Sammut and Hubert Adamczyk coming
into the team. Under-15 defender Sterling lined up in an all-schoolboy
backline alongside Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Grant, protecting Jared
Thompson in goal.
The young Blues started with a 3-4-2-1 system with Mukhtar Ali and captain
Sammut in central midfield, while Charlie Wakefield and Muheim operated on
the right and left respectively. Hubert Adamczyk and Isaac Christie-Davies
provided the support for striker Faiq Bolkiah.
== First half ==
The visitors started brightly and had the first attempt as Ali's effort
from range was comfortably gathered by Dean Henderson in the United goal
after five minutes. Moments later, the opening goal did arrive but it was
Thompson picking the ball out of his net.
Rashford burst into the box and was felled by the outstretched leg of
Grant as he tried to skip beyond the defender. Rashford picked himself up
to take the spot-kick, confidently firing the ball into the bottom left
corner as Thompson dived in the opposite direction.
The Chelsea keeper made an important save to deny Ruairi Croskery after
Tyler Reid had advanced down the right and cut the ball back cleverly for
the well-positioned midfielder, before Cameron Borthwick-Jackson denied
Christie-Davies with a well-timed sliding tackle following intricate play
between Bolkiah and Adamczyk.
The two sides traded shots from distance as the interval approached, with
Henderson saving from Sammut and then Ali firing wide at one end before
Borthwick-Jackson, Jordan Thompson and Croskery worked the Chelsea
goalkeeper into a few routine saves.
In the final minute of the half, Bolkiah had a sight at goal after good
work from Muheim down the left but the ball bobbled awkwardly for the
striker and the chance quickly disappeared.
== Second half ==
Christie-Davies went close to an early equaliser with a curling free-kick
that flew inches wide as the Blues restarted strongly. Borthwick-Jackson
blocked Sammut's fierce drive following an excellent run from deep by
Chalobah, before Thompson was alert to thwart Rashford with a brave save
at the striker's feet.
The dangerous Rashford fashioned a good opportunity for himself after an
hour but fired into the side netting, before Chelsea substitute Mason
Mount got on the end of Muheim's driven corner from the right but his
effort lacked the power and direction to trouble Henderson. Mount again
tested the home goalkeeper before the visitors grabbed a deserved
equaliser after 75 minutes.
The lively Sterling overlapped down the right flank and delivered a low
cross into the six-yard box that deflected off Borthwick-Jackson and then
RoShaun Williams before flying past Henderson into the back of the net.
Both sides pushed for a winner late on as Callum Gribbin and Reid forced
saves from Thompson before Chelsea threatened through Christie-Davies.
Muheim was denied a great goal by Henderson after taking the ball on his
chest and flicking it brilliantly over Borthwick-Jackson before firing
straight at the keeper.
The winning goal did arrive in the third minute of added time and it was
Chelsea celebrating again. Muheim fashioned some space on the edge of the
box and his strike deflected off Borthwick-Jackson before looping over
Henderson.
Next up for the Under-18s is their final home game of the campaign as they
welcome Manchester City to Aldershot Town next Saturday [9 May], kick-off
1.30pm. Admission is free to all spectators. Before then, our Under-21s
continue their league campaign with a trip to Fulham on Monday [4 May],
kick-off 12.05pm. That game is live on Chelsea TV.
