Under-21s report: Fulham 1 Chelsea 3
Mon 4 May 2015
Our Under-21s kept their title aspirations alive with a third consecutive
league win. A brace from Dominic Solanke inside the opening quarter of an
hour, his 37th and 38th goals of the season, gave Adi Viveash and his side
a great start before Adam Taggart reduced the deficit in added time at the
end of the first half.
Charly Musonda's free-kick shortly after the restart restored the Blues'
two-goal advantage and the Belgian came close to adding a fourth with a
low drive that cannoned back off the post. Goalmouth action was limited in
the last half hour as Chelsea comfortably secured the three points.
The win takes us up to third in the league table, three points behind
leaders Manchester United with a game in hand. Our final four games of the
campaign see us host Liverpool and West Ham, while away trips take us to
Sunderland and Norwich City.
== Team news ==
There were four changes from the side that won 2-0 away at Southampton the
previous week as Fikayo Tomori, Charly Musonda, Reece Mitchell and Jeremie
Boga came into the team. Tomori joined Dion Conroy, Jake Clarke-Salter and
Ola Aina in a back four protecting Mitchell Beeney in goal, while Musonda
partnered captain Jordan Houghton in midfield.
Boga operated in the no.10 role providing the support for striker Solanke,
with Mitchell and Kasey Palmer starting out wide.
== First half ==
The young Blues came into the game on a run of three games unbeaten and
their confidence was evident as they stormed into a two-goal lead inside
the opening 15 minutes. Solanke broke the deadlock early on as he latched
on to a perfectly-weighted forward pass from Tomori and finished
confidently into the bottom far corner.
Nine minutes later it was 2-0 and the clinical Solanke was celebrating
again as he netted his 38th goal of the campaign. Palmer advanced down the
wing and left Ryheem Sheckleford in his wake before finding the striker in
the six-yard box with a low cross. Solanke did the rest, as so often this
season, prodding the ball beyond the helpless Magnus Norman from close
range.
Fulham grew stronger as the half wore on and Adam Taggart twice went close
to reducing the deficit before Emerson Hyndman's powerful effort stung the
palms of Beeney. Solanke was inches away from a half-hour hat-trick after
racing in behind following a long throw forward by Aina. The 17-year-old
cut inside and drilled in a low shot that rebounded behind off the base of
the near post.
Buomesca Tue Na Bangna's strike was gathered comfortably by Beeney as the
interval loomed, before Palmer drilled a shot from distance that Norman
did well to hold. However, the Cottagers did cut the deficit in added time
as Jordan Evans's good cross from the left was turned in at the back post
by Taggart.
== Second half ==
Alex Kiwomya and Charlie Colkett were introduced early in the second half
with the aim of adding fresh impetus to the side but it was a brilliant
free-kick from Musonda that restored the visitors' two-goal advantage.
Tomori was brought down as he cut inside from the left and the young
Belgian took aim from 20 yards out, bending the ball out of the reach of
the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.
Solanke was close to grabbing a fourth moments later as his low deflected
shot was pushed behind by an impressive reaction save from Norman, before
Musonda struck the woodwork with a great run and drive from the edge of
the box.
Tomori had a shot well blocked in the final 10 minutes but the Blues
managed the game maturely for the remainder of the half as they kept
possession and looked to counter-attack swiftly. The win keeps their bid
to retain the Under-21 title in their hands with four games of the season
remaining.
The Under-21s are next in action on Thursday (7 May) as they host
Liverpool at Aldershot Town. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and tickets are priced
at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. All proceeds from the game will
be donated to the Nepal earthquake relief fund.
