Under-21s report: Chelsea 4 Liverpool 3
Thu 7 May 2015
Our Under-21s closed the gap on league leaders Manchester United to three
points, with a game in hand, as they came from behind to beat
second-placed Liverpool.
A hat-trick from Dominic Solanke and a brilliant strike from Alex Kiwomya
proved the difference, although Jerome Sinclair's header had put the
visitors in front early on.
Three goals in 17 minutes turned the game around as Solanke struck twice
and Kiwomya fired in off the underside of the bar, although the Reds
reduced the deficit seven minutes into the second half through Cameron
Brannagan. The Blues were forced into some strong defending to preserve
the lead before Solanke completed his treble and sealed the points with a
wonderful improvised finish.
Harry Wilson grabbed a consolation goal in injury time but we defended
well to seal all three points in our fourth consecutive victory.
Adi Viveash's side will host West Ham at Stamford Bridge and travel to
Sunderland and Norwich in their final three league games, as their bid to
retain the title continues into the final weeks of the campaign.
== Team news ==
Viveash made five changes from the side that beat Fulham 3-1 on Monday,
with Bradley Collins, Andreas Christensen, Charlie Colkett, Izzy Brown and
Kiwomya all coming into the team. Brown and Kiwomya provided the wide
support for striker Solanke, while Colkett and captain Jordan Houghton
joined Charly Musonda in midfield.
Fikayo Tomori, Jake Clarke-Salter and Ola Aina lined up alongside
Christensen in the back four, protecting Collins in goal.
== First half ==
After a fairly quiet opening to the game, two goals in four minutes
brought the clash between fourth and second in the Under-21 Premier League
to life. The deadlock was broken by the young Reds after 12 minutes as
Sinclair planted a simple header beyond Collins following a deep,
in-swinging Ryan Kent corner from the left.
It may have been a soft goal to concede but the Blues were not behind for
long. Springing quickly from defence to attack, Houghton slid a perfect
pass forward for Solanke and the 17-year-old striker was clear in behind
the visitors' backline.
The forward demonstrated all the confidence of someone with three goals in
his last two games, rounding goalkeeper Ryan Fulton and slotting the ball
into the back of the net for his 39th goal of another impressive campaign.
The game settled down again with the action moving to the midfield
battleground as both sides looked to gain a hold. However, another
four-minute salvo saw Viveash's side establish a two-goal lead with 33
minutes on the clock.
Solanke grabbed his second, and 40th of the season, in an identical
fashion to his first as he beat the offside trap, accelerated in behind
and took the ball around Fulton before poking into an unguarded goal.
Collins made an important stop from Jerome Sinclair down the other end but
minutes later it was 3-1 as the ball fell invitingly in the box for
Kiwomya and the wideman rifled an unstoppable drive past Fulton and into
the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar.
The home keeper saved again, this time from Brannagan, before Lloyd Jones
headed off-target as Liverpool provided a reminder of their threat in the
final minutes of the half.
== Second half ==
The Reds restarted brightly and Kent's curling free-kick was pushed over
the bar by Collins before the goalkeeper clawed away the following corner.
However, he could do nothing to keep out Brannagan's effort moments later
as the midfielder skipped away from a challenge and found the bottom
corner with a neat finish.
Brannagan had an excellent chance to level the scores as Kent escaped down
the left flank and drove the ball low into the box, however he stumbled at
the crucial moment and the chance was gone. Colkett's drive from distance
deflected behind and substitute Kasey Palmer's free-kick was gathered
routinely by Fulton before Liverpool came close again.
Wilson, introduced at the interval by Michael Beale, latched on to a long
ball forward and lobbed the stranded Collins, although his effort flew
narrowly wide of the target. Kent then cut inside Tomori and struck a
fierce effort that flew inches past the far post before Collins denied
Brannagan again, this time with his feet.
Those saves proved significant as Solanke completed his hat-trick with 14
minutes remaining. Substitute Jeremie Boga escaped in behind down the
right flank and pulled an inviting centre back for the lurking striker,
who produced a wonderful back-flick finish from close range.
The visitors pulled back a consolation in stoppage time as Wilson turned
the ball past Collins at the back post however Viveash's boys held strong
to see the game out and secure all three points.
== Reaction ==
Assistant manager Andy Myers reflected after the game on a performance
full of character and grit from the players. Speaking to the official
Chelsea website, he said: 'We started a little bit slowly in the first
half but then we improved and started to impose ourselves on the game.
'In the second half we had to dig deep and show character to grind out the
result because it wasn't easy and Liverpool are a good team. Winning is a
part of development and you want the players playing in environments where
it's about winning football matches.'
Myers also had praise for Solanke, who took his goalscoring tally for the
season to 41 with a hat-trick on the night.
'Obviously it's a team effort but you have to give full credit to Dom
because he's had an unbelievable season in front of goal. Not only that,
he's grown as the season has gone on and improved on the little things
we've been working on like his back-to-goal play. His goalscoring is
always there and his third goal tonight reminded me a bit of Lewis Baker's
goal at Arsenal last season; he had to improvise like all top goalscorers
know how to do.'
Solanke himself reflected on his goal total and a hat-trick that helps
keep the team firmly in the race for the Under-21 title.
'It's an amazing achievement for me personally. I had a good year last
season and now I've doubled my goal tally this season so I'm really
pleased.'
Our Under-21s return to action on Monday (11 May) with a trip to the
Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland. Before then, our Under-18s play at
Aldershot this Saturday (9 May) as they host Manchester City, with entry
free to all.
