Under-21s report: Sunderland 1 Chelsea 0
Mon 11 May 2015
Our Under-21s remain in the title race but require Manchester United to
drop points in their final two games if they are to retain the league
crown.
We currently trail the league leaders by three points, with both sides
left with two games of the campaign to play after the Blues tasted defeat
for the first time in six games at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland went closest in an even first half as Thomas Beadling's header
rebounded back off the crossbar. The hosts eventually took the lead in the
52nd minute as Duncan Watmore slotted the ball confidently into the bottom
corner following a long clearance forward. Despite chances late on,
Chelsea could not find a way through a resilient defence.
== Team news ==
Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that beat Liverpool 4-3 four
days previously as Mitchell Beeney, Dion Conroy, Kasey Palmer and Jeremie
Boga returned. Boga and Palmer joined Alex Kiwomya in providing the
attacking support for striker Dominic Solanke, the latter two having
shared the goalscoring in that win over Liverpool.
Conroy partnered Jake Clarke-Salter at centre-back, with Fikayo Tomori and
Ola Aina at right-back and left-back respectively, protecting Beeney in
goal. Charlie Colkett and captain Jordan Houghton combined to form the
midfield base.
== First half ==
Sunderland started brightly, pressing high up the field and making it
difficult for Viveash's side to play out from the back in their usual
manner. Yet they were unable to turn their early possession into clear
chances and Palmer went close with the game's first shot, a fierce strike
that whistled inches beyond Jordan Pickford's far post.
The midfielder, operating from the start in the no.10 role, tested
Pickford moments later with a left-footed drive that the goalkeeper got
down well to push away. Down the other end, the young Black Cats went
close when Beadling rose to meet a corner from the right and his looping
header bounced off Beeney's crossbar and away to safety.
Clarke-Salter blocked bravely as Lynden Gooch prepared to strike at goal,
and Chelsea appeals for a penalty were turned away by the referee as
Kiwomya's curling effort struck the outstretched arm of Beadling. From the
resulting corner, Houghton's header was saved comfortably by Pickford.
The visitors threatened twice in the final few minutes of the half as
Solanke went close to connecting with Kiwomya's dangerous cross but
mistimed his jump, and then Boga shot straight at the goalkeeper. Watmore
then worked Beeney into another routine stop.
== Second half ==
Viveash introduced Charly Musonda to replace Boga for the second half but
it was the home side celebrating as they broke the deadlock seven minutes
after the restart. A long ball forward from the goalkeeper dropped
invitingly over the top of the defence for Watmore and the league's Player
of the Month for April provided a composed finish to beat Beeney.
The Blues went close to grabbing an instant equaliser as Palmer teed
himself up for an audacious overhead kick from the edge of the penalty
area. The ball dropped inches wide of the far post, with Solanke going
close to turning it in from close range.
Sunderland could have doubled their advantage just after the hour mark as
Mikael Mandron raced clear down the right channel and attempted to squeeze
a high drive inside the near post, though Beeney read the effort and
pushed the ball round the post.
Kiwomya arrowed a shot wide as the visitors enjoyed more of the ball in
the later stages but Sunderland's defence remained well-organised and
compact as they looked to secure a fourth successive clean sheet.
Musonda fashioned a sight at goal following a mazy run that saw him skip
past three defenders before a well-timed challenge thwarted his progress
towards goal.
There was time remaining for one last opportunity as substitutes Tammy
Abraham and Musonda combined in the final minute of normal time. The
Belgian's forward pass found the striker eight yards out and he spun
cleverly before unleashing a low shot at goal that deflected wide,
ensuring the hosts held on to secure all three points.
The Under-21s are back in action on Friday (15 May), hosting West Ham at
Stamford Bridge in a 7.05pm kick-off. Tickets are currently available to
purchase (maximum of 10 per person), priced at £5 for adults and £3 for
seniors/juniors.
