Former Chelsea and England striker Kerry Dixon jailed for nine months for
pub assault

Kerry Dixon completed his tragic journey from Chelsea idol to prison when
he was jailed for nine months for a 'shocking' assault in a Dunstable pub.
The Professional Footballers' Association had written to Luton Crown Court
on Dixon's behalf appealing for him to be kept out of jail but Judge
Barbara Mensah said that the brutality of Dixon's attack, in which he
kicked and punched victim Ben Scoble eight times around the head, meant
she would not consider a suspended sentence.
Dixon, 53, slumped in his chair as the verdict was announced while his
girlfriend Kim, wearing dark glasses, watched from the public gallery.
Dixon was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm a week ago.
He argued that he had been provoked by Scoble stealing his chair and
swearing at him, and that he was afraid of being attacked because of an
incident 10 years ago when he had been 'glassed' in another pub brawl.
But Judge Mensah said: 'Why go over to Mr Scoble in that case, if he had
a glass in his hand? Out of the blue, as we see on CCTV, we see you still
very annoyed and immediately strike Mr Scoble.
'You were annoyed and clearly going to teach him a lesson. You knocked him
off the bar stool and continued to pummel him on the ground. It was
shocking and it was sickening to watch.'
The descent of Dixon from being a golden boy of English football in the
1980s is shocking and dramatic even by football standards.
He scored 193 goals for Chelsea between 1983-92 and with his blond locks
and commanding presence, brought a glamour to a club that had hit hard
times and yo-yoed between the top two divisions.
Dixon never hid that his priority was to get his name on the scoresheet
and went by the motto: 'Why pass when I can miss it myself?'
He won eight England caps and was part of Bobby Robson's squad at the 1986
World Cup, making one appearance as a substitute against Poland when he
replaced Gary Lineker.
Dixon was always a keen gambler, and his life went off the rails when he
retired from football in 2000 having had spells with several clubs
including Southampton, Millwall and Luton Town.
A brief spell as manager of Doncaster Rovers, where his office doubled as
the physio's room, did not work out and a bright media career also
eventually tailed off due to ongoing problems with gambling, alcohol and
depression.
Dixon was convicted of drink-driving in 2000 and given a caution for
common assault when he pushed a former team-mate against the wall in 2002.
Chelsea stopped using him on their club's television channel in 2014 after
he was charged with possession of cocaine even though the case was later
dropped.
In the past year, Dixon has worked as a labourer to support himself and
Kim in their council accommodation and had counselling for the gambling
addiction that has cost him so much.
Even so, Dixon's natural charm means it would be hard to find anyone in
the game with a bad word to say about him.
Bobby Barnes, PFA deputy chief executive, wrote on Dixon's behalf to the
court saying they would help him find football coaching as part of any
community service that went alongside a suspended sentence.
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck also offered his support in the letter. Mark
Wyeth QC, defending, said: 'There is a lot of good in this man and a lot
of goodwill to him. The consequence (of the 2014 drugs trial) has been no
media work for him. He suffered greatly financially that year.'
The next question will be how Chelsea and the football world in general
can help Dixon when he has served his time.
A Chelsea spokesman said: 'Kerry has been a great servant to this club
over the years and we have supported him and offered him assistance
wherever possible, and will continue to do so.'
As he sits in his prison cell, remorseful, ashamed and no longer able to
help care for two elderly and unwell parents, Dixon may finally realise he
also has to start helping himself.
