At the end of a long and ultimately successful campaign, the official
Chelsea website sat down to talk with Under-21s manager Adi Viveash and
reflect on his first season in charge of the most senior development age
group.
2014/15 will be remembered as a special year for the Chelsea Academy; not
only did several graduates of our youth system make their first-team
debuts but we also recorded a remarkable double in winning both the FA
Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League, the latter an Under-19 equivalent of
the Champions League. While the Youth Cup was overseen by Under-18s
manager Joe Edwards, the overseas campaign was led by Viveash.
'It was fantastic for us all to be involved in European football and the
players were just phenomenal; 36 goals scored, only one game lost and we
were worthy winners, the best team in the competition,' he emphasises.
'We enjoyed travelling with the first team in the group stage and that's
vital to the players learning what it's like at the highest level, which
they're hoping to reach.
'To be Under-19 European champions is special and it's been nice for the
staff to have played a small part in helping the players achieve their
dreams. You could tell from reading their comments on social media
afterwards how special an achievement it was for them.
'It was a real team objective at the start of the season because I think
they felt they'd underachieved last season going out in the
quarter-finals. They used that as determination to go again this year and
that's what makes them such a special group of players.'
As well as success with the Under-19s, Viveash also guided our Under-21s
to a third-place finish in the league. The new format of the Under-21
league placed us in an elite top tier containing clubs from the full
length of the land. It ensured the competitiveness of the campaign was
high throughout.
'Every game was a challenge and very strong tactically, which is what you
want. There was a lot of good development in our group over the course of
the season and the fact we finished with quite a few players who started
the season with Joe in the Under-18s was also a real positive.
'I thought our best game in the league was away at Man United; for 70
minutes we were fantastic tactically, playing against a diamond in
midfield and against a team who were very strong with four first-team
players starting. We didn't get the job done on the night and lost the
points in the last 20 minutes but I think the players and staff took a lot
from that game.
'Third place is a good finish to back up winning the league last season.
Finishing in the top three or four every year is something all the good
teams do. Hopefully we're up there again next season but it's going to be
tough again because the league will get stronger and older, while we're
getting younger.'
A comparatively youthful Under-21 squad, the result of pushing promising
youngsters on to achieve by moving them up the age groups ahead of their
natural one by birthdate, is emphasised when looking at the season's stats
lower down this page. The top six goalscorers in the league season and
five of the top eight appearance makers were also young enough for the
Under-18s.
In his first year as Under-21s coach having himself moved up from the
U18s, Viveash anticipated the extra challenges off the field and the time
it would take for the players to adapt to his way of working.
'It's been an interesting year for me personally. You have to adapt to the
dynamics of working closely with the first team and liaising with Jose
Mourinho and Steve Holland. That's a different side of things to the youth
team, as is managing double the amount of staff, so I can definitely see
the development in myself from three years ago when I started the
Under-18s job.
'The way in which you handle things off the pitch is 50 per cent of the
job with the Under-21s and it does take a bit of time getting used to
playing on a different day every week. I've certainly enjoyed the season
though and as a group of staff we've been very fortunate to work with
probably the best group of players we've had in the Academy for many years.
'As a coach, that has been a great challenge and it makes you go to a
higher level yourself. It's always a challenge to make young players
understand that when they haven't got the ball is more important than when
they have got it but the development has been really noticeable for me.'
Trophies are rewarding but developing players for the first team remains
the ultimate aim. With senior debuts for Andreas Christensen, Ruben
Loftus-Cheek, Dominic Solanke and Izzy Brown across the course of the
campaign, Viveash can reflect proudly on helping that transition this
season.
'It's been a phenomenal year for the whole club but the fact our Academy
achievements were recognised like they were was really special. It's been
amazing how many Chelsea supporters have come up to me in the last few
weeks and said how proud they were of our players and how they thought
they represent the club with class on and off the pitch. That makes me
feel humble and it makes my job worthwhile.
'Ruben and Izzy started pre-season with us and then six months later
they're with the first team. The debuts are ultimately what we're trying
to achieve and to have four players from the Under-21 squad in the first
team training group every day is the biggest measure of success we can
get.'
