At the end of a season of unprecedented success for the Academy, the
official Chelsea website sat down with our Under-18s manager Joe Edwards
to reflect on another remarkable 12 months.
Alongside retaining the FA Youth Cup for the first time in over 50 years,
our youth team also topped their regional league before finishing third in
the elite play-off round. Edwards, at the end of his first season as
Under-18s manager, believes working with this year's intake of scholars
last season when he was Under-16x coach eased their transition into the
youth team and aided his own step up.
'They were a great example last year of how we want our boys to work in
the full-time programme; fully committed to their school work but also
putting in so many hours on the training pitch and in the gym,' he says.
'A lot of them got a taste of Under-18 football the previous season but I
think they were all looking forward to it being their team and playing
competitively for points every week.
'That was the challenge we set out for ourselves at the start of the
season; could we maintain this strong work ethic where the players are
developing every day on the training pitch but then the focus shifts to
winning games on a Saturday as well.'
The players and staff struck the balance perfectly as the young Blues
finished top of the south section, 10 points clear of their nearest rivals
and with 69 goals scored in 22 games. A dozen of those goals came in one
exceptional morning at Cobham as the hosts overturned a 2-0 deficit to
triumph 12-2 against Aston Villa.
'We had a bit of a slow start to the season but then hit some really good
form and ended up winning our league comfortably, which was a real credit
to the boys to do that with a group of predominantly first-years,' Edwards
says.
'It was a 22-game league so a big chunk of our work this year, and to be
crowned champions is something we were really pleased with.
'We had a period about halfway through the regional programme when we
weren't playing so well away from home and one of the big turning points
was away at West Ham. We went there with a real emphasis on how aggressive
and physical we wanted to be. I felt the boys really started to buy into
what we were talking about with sometimes needing grit and determination
to win games. That was a big development for the team and a lot of
individuals.
'Obviously the Villa game is also a standout and was a crazy game to be
involved in, especially when you go 2-0 down. The pleasing thing about
that game was we had a few players involved who haven't been a big part of
the youth group this season like Jeremie Boga and Dominic Solanke [who
were mostly with the older age group coached by Adi Viveash].
'You're asking a big question of their character when you bring them back
in and the performance was a nice summary of our mentality as a group; how
much we wanted to win and how ruthless we could be in front of goal.'
The FA Youth Cup campaign started at the end of the calendar year with the
Blues looking to defend the title they had won so dramatically the
previous May. However a difficult night in Yorkshire in the third round
threatened to send the holders out early on.
'I spoke to one of the England national team coaches after that game at
Leeds and he said to me, "I think you may have just won the Youth Cup
there tonight."' recalls Edwards.
'When you look at the squad of players we had with the likes of Dominic,
Izzy Brown, Charlie Colkett, Charly Musonda, Jay Dasilva and Jake
Clarke-Salter, who had all won it just six months before, I think people
were fully aware that one of the only things that might stop us is one of
those nights when it's ugly, you don't get going and you have a setback.
'That was certainly one of those nights, with our goalkeeper Bradley
Collins sent off straight after half-time, but these boys have had a
fantastic example of strength of character set for them over the years and
they seemed to draw off that.'
The team went on to lift the trophy for the fourth time in six years in
May, triumphing 5-2 on aggregate over Manchester City in the final. One of
the more difficult moments on their road to victory came in the
semi-final, where they trailed Tottenham following a 2-0 first leg defeat
at White Hart Lane.
'That was an important period of the season because the Under-21s had lost
a couple of games as well and sometimes those spells can drag on. However,
the benefit of being at Chelsea means the big games come thick and fast
and the Under-19s beating Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Youth League
quarter-final was pivotal for us all.
'I didn't sense any pressure in the camp in between those semi-final legs.
We showed the boys some motivational clips of all the comebacks over the
years, not just in the Youth Cup but with the first team against
Barcelona, Napoli and that Champions League run as well. I think everyone
knows that to get to the moments at the end of the season with all the
silverware, there's going to be some tough times along the way and you're
going to have to ride them out.'
Edwards has clearly enjoyed his first campaign in charge but he is also
animated when speaking about the challenge of going again next season with
a new group of scholars, many of whom have featured in youth team games in
the final months of this season. He also reflects on the Academy's
involvement in the club's end-of-season celebrations, including the
victory parade, as something that has whet the collective appetite for
more success.
'We always have our eyes on the end-goal, which is to get players into the
first team and ensure they have the best careers they possibly can have,
but sometimes you can get wrapped up in always looking forward. You have
to enjoy and celebrate your success when it comes along.
'I said to the boys after the victory parade that there are a lot of
players who have top Premier League careers and never get a taste of
something like that. If they didn't know it already, they know now what a
special club they're at.
'For me this season, having the players with you full-time every day
demands a lot more out of you. You have to constantly be asking yourself
questions of how you can keep improving them every day. But when you're a
coach, the most important thing is the tools you have to work with and
when you're working with the players we have at the club, it makes the job
not only a little easier but also a lot more enjoyable.'
