Chelsea Under-18s came from behind to record a win away at Leicester this
morning (Saturday) and continue their unbeaten start to the season.
The hosts took an early lead through Harvey Barnes before Miro Muheim
equalised with a neat low finish. Admiral Muskwe restored the young Foxes'
advantage and they lead at the break, yet goals from Trevoh Chalobah and
Harvey St Clair turned the contest around in the second half and earned
the Blues a fourth win in five games.
Joe Edwards made three changes from the side that were victorious over
Southampton a week previously, with Joseph Colley, Ali Suljic and Ruben
Sammut coming into the team.
Colley and Suljic formed the centre-back partnership, joining Josh Grant
and Chalobah in protecting Nathan Baxter in goal.
Sammut partnered Isaac Christie-Davies in central midfield, with Jacob
Maddox in the number 10 position in between Charlie Wakefield and St Clair
out wide. Muheim led the line up front once again.
Leicester were in front with just three minutes on the clock as Barnes
capitalised on some defensive uncertainty at the back following a corner
and finished beyond Baxter.
Max Bramley saved well from Wakefield and the visitors were back on level
terms after 20 minutes as Muheim continued his impressive goalscoring form
with an expert finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Wakefield fired wide as he threatened again but the home side, themselves
unbeaten in the south section of the Under-18 Premier League coming into
the game, took the lead again on the half-hour mark. Advancing down the
right channel, Muskwe latched on to a forward pass and finished
confidently into the back of the net.
Muheim struck a warning shot that reminded Leicester of the visitors'
danger, thumping the base of the post, before a double Chelsea change at
the break set the tone for an improved second half display.
Fikayo Tomori and Dujon Sterling were introduced, though it was Baxter
forced into the first action of the second period as he got down low to
push Toby Fura's effort round the post.
Tomori then cleared off the line from Barnes after the forward had rounded
Baxter, before Edwards's side restored parity in the game. Muheim's deep
corner was returned back into the box by Grant and Chalobah was on hand to
turn the loose ball past Bramley for the leveller.
The young Blues looked most likely to snatch a winner and that proved to
be the case as they broke forward through Muheim and St Clair fired in a
winner.
Colley came close to extending the lead late on as we saw out the game
well to claim maximum points on the road.
== Reaction ==
After the game, manager Joe Edwards reflected on a pleasing performance in
difficult conditions. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said:
'Leicester away is always a tough place to come and they certainly lived
up to that.
'They were loud and in our faces from the start and obviously got ahead
with an early goal but we reacted well to get back into the game.
Leicester were a threat with some direct play and we had to dig in to
battle against that but I felt we got what we deserved from the game.
'It's been a really good start to the season for us. We've talked about
conceding fewer goals so it was disappointing to be 2-1 down at half-time
but we know Leicester is a tough place to come and get a result so we're
very happy with our morning's work.'
