Under-21s report: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 3
Fri 30 Oct 2015
Chelsea Under-21s went down to a derby defeat at Aldershot as a brace from
Shayon Harrison and a goal in between from Spurs skipper Milos Veljkovic
earned the visitors victory in the Under-21 Premier League.
Tammy Abraham pulled a late consolation back for the Blues but it was too
late in the day to spark a comeback as the visitors took all three points
back to north London.
Adi Viveash made three changes from the side beaten earlier in the week by
Manchester City, with Mitchell Beeney, Jay Dasilva and Ruben Sammut coming
into the team. The latter was making his first Under-21s start, while
Dasilva returned after representing England Under-17s at the World Cup in
Chile.
Abraham continued to lead the line up front supported by Charly Musonda,
Reece Mitchell and Dasilva, with captain Charlie Colkett lining up
alongside Sammut in midfield.
The back four was unchanged from four days previously and comprised of Ola
Aina, Fikayo Tomori, Jake Clarke-Salter and Fankaty Dabo. Beeney was in
goal.
Tottenham came into the game as the division's top goalscorers and in
third place in the Division 1 table, though the opening half hour was more
a tactical battle than an open encounter. Dasilva demonstrated an
impressive leap at the far post to connect to Musonda's left-footed
delivery, though his header failed to trouble Tom Glover in the visitors'
goal.
Much of Spurs' early threat was fashioned down their right flank, with
Tomori and Clarke-Salter manfully defending the front post from a series
of teasing deliveries, before captain Cameron Carter-Vickers met a corner
from the right to bring a routine stop from Beeney.
Down the other end, Clarke-Salter headed over from a Musonda corner before
the north Londoners enjoyed a brighter spell and took the lead after 29
minutes. Filip Lesniak advanced and supplied a simple pass for Harrison,
who finished confidently beyond Beeney to continue his impressive
goalscoring record against Chelsea Academy teams.
The Blues responded brightly as Dabo's dangerous delivery from the left
brought some strong defending from Carter-Vickers, before Colkett fired a
free-kick off-target following an aerial foul on Abraham.
Beeney denied Kenny McEvoy's effort from a tight angle as the interval
approached, while Dasilva’s cross was a few inches too high for Abraham
in the box as the visitors went in at the break with a slender advantage.
Musonda's rising drive whistled narrowly over Glover's bar before Spurs
went so close to doubling their advantage as Beeney got the slightest of
touches to a dangerous delivery and it proved enough to put off McEvoy at
the back post, before Zenon Stylianides's low drive took a slight
deflection and flew just wide.
However, the reprieve for the Blues did not last long as they made it 2-0
after 52 minutes from the resulting corner. Some slack marking from the
hosts allowed captain Veljkovic space in the box and the Serbian provided
the punishing finish.
Ugo Ehiogu's side added a third seven minutes later as Harrison turned
Anthony Georgiou's cross expertly inside the post and beyond the dive of
Beeney to put the visitors in a commanding position.
The young Blues kept battling and looking to find a route back into the
game, however, as Musonda fired a free-kick over and then substitute Miro
Muheim brought a comfortable stop from Glover as he shot straight at the
keeper from the edge of the box.
The Swiss youth international was then teed up invitingly by Abraham but
could not quite connect to his shot and dragged it wide, before Beeney
saved from Harrison as the striker looked for his hat-trick goal.
Muheim shot over and Abraham fired straight at Glover before the Chelsea
striker pulled back a consolation goal three minutes from time as he
powered a header into the far corner after Aina's super cross from the
right.
The next Academy action takes place tomorrow at Cobham when our
table-topping Under-18s host Norwich City.

After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on the evening's events and
emphasised the need for the group to keep calm and stick together during a
difficult development period.
'We were beaten by the better team,' he told the official Chelsea website.
'The first hour was not good enough from us with or without the ball and
Tottenham deservedly won the game. It's a difficult period for us, we're
not used to losing and this is a very unforgiving league but indivudual
errors have cost us once more and it's three finishes from inside the
six-yard box that have decided the game.
'We've played two very difficult games in a week but the way we finished
in the last 30 minutes tonight does at least give us something to work
with. We kept going, scored a good goal and caused Spurs a few problems
but the game is over by then.
'Defeats do drain your confidence but we have to remain calm and keep
working together. I've asked the players to think about the collective,
think about what they can do to improve the team. That's quite difficult
for young players, especially when you're thinking about yourself and
where you can take your career, but that's the challenge I've asked them
to think about over the weekend.'
