UEFA Youth League report: Chelsea 3 Dynamo Kiev 1
Wed 4 Nov 2015
Our Under-19s confirmed their progress from the UEFA Youth League group
stage with victory at Cobham this afternoon (Wednesday).
The 2014/15 winners will now challenge Porto for top spot in Group G, with
the group winners advancing directly to the last-16. Dynamo Kiev, while
six points behind with two games remaining, cannot finish above us due to
our favourable head-to-head record. In a change to the format this season,
the group runners-up will face a one-legged away playoff against a side
from the domestic champions side of the competition.
The young Blues went in front midway through the opening period through
Miro Muheim's close-range finish, before Dynamo equalised within a minute
of the restart. However, Tammy Abraham's header 11 minutes later put the
hosts back in front and his stoppage-time second sealed the points.
Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that were 2-0 winners in Kiev
a fortnight previously, with defenders Josh Grant, Joseph Colley and Ali
Suljic coming into the team to join Trevoh Chalobah in a back four
protecting Bradley Collins in goal.
Mukhtar Ali and Kyle Scott retained their places in midfield, with Isaac
Christie-Davies, Muheim and Jacob Maddox supporting captain Tammy Abraham
in attack. The striker netted both goals in the victory in the Ukrainian
capital on matchday three.
Yet the Blues were forced into some early defending in the opening
exchanges as they looked to register another clean sheet against Kiev.
Captain Pavlo Lukyanchuk headed a low corner narrowly over before Colley
did well to recover and thwart the advance of Schcebetun.
Muheim came close to capitalising on a poor clearance from keeper Vadym
Soldatenko but his attempted lob flew just off-target, before the Swiss
youth international combined neatly with Maddox but narrowly overhit his
low cross towards Abraham.
The visitors ought to have taken the lead midway through the half as
Mykola Shaparenko volleyed a cleared corner back towards goal and
Lukyanchuk poked wide from a few yards out. That miss proved even more
regrettable moments later as Viveash's holders made it 1-0.
Neat and patient interplay around the box fashioned the opportunity as Ali
drove forward into the area and cut the ball cleverly back to Muheim, who
had held his run and was rewarded with the simple task of converting from
close range. It was his maiden Under-19s goal and his sixth of the season
in all competitions.
Dynamo remained a threat and Collins excelled again to keep the home
side's lead intact, denying Schebetun's low drive courtesy of a smart stop
with his feet. As the interval approached, the Ukrainian striker was found
by Bogdan Mykhaylichenko's early cross but could not trouble the Chelsea
keeper with his header, before threatening once more with a strike that
Collins again kept out.
It took just 50 seconds after the restart for the visitors to finally beat
the Blues stopper and it was the lively Schcebetun celebrating as he
punished a mistake at the back from Colley by finishing expertly into the
bottom far corner.
Chelsea quickly composed themselves and settled back into their flow, with
the scores level for just 11 minutes. The game's third goal arrived
following a lovely team move from the Blues, involving Christie-Davies,
Ali and Scott moving the ball from left to right before the latter found
the overlapping Grant down the right flank.
The defender delivered a perfect cross into the six-yard box and Abraham's
run was well-timed as he powered a front-post header beyond the keeper for
his fourth goal in four UEFA Youth League games this campaign.
Muheim brought a routine save from Soldatenko with a right-foot drive from
20 yards out but we were unable to add a quick third goal as Kiev remained
firmly in the contest. Schcebetun and Shaparenko went close to levelling
again, the latter's rising effort whistling inches past Collins's far
post, before Muheim was again denied by the keeper and then fired over the
bar after a neat layoff from substitute Charlie Wakefield.
Schcebetun went close as his header flashed wide after a fierce drive
across the face of goal caused problems, though Viveash's team defended
with intelligence before wrapping up the win in added time as Muheim
provided a low centre for Abraham to turn in.
The Under-19s will finish the group campaign, like the first team, with a
trip to Israel to take on Maccabi Tel Aviv and a home game against Porto.
