Under-21s report: Chelsea 4 Liverpool 0
Sun 8 Nov 2015
Chelsea Under-21s recorded a third win of the season over their rivals
from Merseyside following an impressive display at Cobham this afternoon
(Sunday).
In front of a watching Jose Mourinho, it took 41 minutes for us to find
the breakthrough as Bertrand Traore headed in a dangerous free-kick at the
back post, before a brilliant spell at the start of the second half
settled the contest. Ruben Loftus-Cheek netted a wonderful individual goal
10 seconds after kick-off before two goals in a minute from Tammy Abraham,
the first from the penalty spot, sealed the win.
Adi Viveash made five changes from the side that were beaten by Tottenham
last time out, with Loftus-Cheek coming into the team for a first Under-21
appearance of the season. Traore, Ola Aina and Jamal Blackman also started.
Blackman was protected by a back four of Aina, Fikayo Tomori, Dion Conroy
and Jay Dasilva, while Loftus-Cheek started in the number 10 midfield role
supporting Abraham in attack. Traore and Charly Musonda lined up
wide-right and wide-left respectively, with captain Charlie Colkett and
Kyle Scott playing in central midfield.
Before the game, players from both sides were joined on the field by a
number of our junior sides as we marked Remembrance Sunday alongside
paying tribute to our former manager and long-time supporter of youth
development at the club, Bobby Campbell, who was a regular watching
Academy games and training right up until his death on Friday at the age
of 78.
The Blues were the better side for much of the opening half and, although
chances were fashioned intermittently, they remained generally limited.
Liverpool defender Joe Maguire collected a booking with just three minutes
on the watch for a late challenge on Loftus-Cheek, though Colkett's
inswinging free-kick was comfortably headed clear, before visiting keeper
Ryan Fulton was called into his first action of the afternoon.
A promising move from Viveash's side fashioned a sight at goal for
Loftus-Cheek and his low strike was arrowing towards the bottom corner
until the keeper's intervention, a flailing right boot diverting the ball
away from danger.
The hosts continued to carve out the better opportunities, with a shot
from Aina deflected behind and then Traore blazing over the bar following
a neat cutback from Loftus-Cheek.
Liverpool squandered a decent opportunity to test Blackman after Conroy
had conceded a free-kick 20 yards out, with Harry Wilson's attempt flying
wide, before enterprising play from Musonda helped tee up Traore to strike
a rising drive just over.
Reds captain Dan Cleary ought to have headed his side in front six minutes
before the break as Alex O'Hanlon's inswinging free-kick found his
well-timed run but he could not make enough contact in the air, before the
Blues scored an almost identical goal down the other end.
Colkett created the danger with his delivery from the dead-ball and Traore
escaped from his marker at the back post to nod beyond Fulton and send us
in to the break with a slender but deserved advantage.
The game was then put to bed in seven blistering second-half minutes after
the restart as the home side netted three times. The first of that trio of
goals came just 10 seconds after kick-off as Loftus-Cheek picked up the
ball and drove powerfully forward from midfield, beating three defenders
before slotting the ball through the legs of Fulton.
It was 3-0 five minutes later as the referee pointed to the spot for a
push in the back of Scott and Abraham stepped up from 12 yards, placing
his finish into the bottom right corner beyond the dive of the goalkeeper.
The dazzling Musonda then capped a remarkable restart by skipping away
from two challenges down the left flank before producing a perfect low
centre with the outside of his boot that handed the supporting Abraham a
close-range finish for his eight goal of the campaign.
Traore tested Fulton but his shot lacked power before Adam Phillips went
close with a couple of free-kick efforts down the other end, the first
flying inches over and the second cleared after a deflection off the wall.
Abraham then went close to completing his hat-trick with a brilliant
effort that the goalkeeper tipped on to the crossbar before Fulton denied
Traore with an impressive low stop at his front post.
Substitute Dan Trickett-Smith saw a looping header land on the top of
Blackman's net but the goalkeeper and his defence were determined not to
be beaten as the team recorded a clean sheet for the first time since the
opening game of the season.
The Under-21s return to action in the league in three weeks when they host
Sunderland at Aldershot on Monday 30 November.
