UEFA Youth League report: Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 Chelsea 4
Tue 24 Nov 2015
Two Tammy Abraham goals bookended strikes from Charlie Wakefield and Kyle
Scott to give Adi Viveash's youngsters a comfortable victory in the
impressive Netanya Stadium this afternoon, and with Porto losing to Dynamo
Kiev in the other game we are guaranteed top spot in Group G.
Today it was all about Chelsea in a one-sided encounter that mirrored the
fixture between the sides in September. Abraham got his sixth of the
competition from the penalty spot on 16 minutes and the lead was doubled
shortly after through the lively Wakefield. Scott capped another
industrious performance with a deflected third five minutes before the
interval.
The second period was shorter on goalmouth action but the Blues finished
strongly and got a fourth through Abraham late on as our fine run in this
competition continued.
Viveash made six changes to the side who beat Dinamo Kiev three weeks ago
including first starts in the competition for Jared Thompson and Charlie
Wakefield. Ola Aina came in at right-back alongside Joseph Colley and
Fikayo Tomori. Charlie Colkett captained from midfield.
We started brightly against a physical Maccabi side who were strong in the
tackle, with mixed results. Both Colkett and Aina felt the full force of a
couple of late challenges early on. After a penetrative run from deep Jay
Dasilva was dispossessed in a legitimate fashion as he looked set to shoot.
The hosts were playing a dangerous game though and paid a heavier price on
16 minutes. Wakefield delivered a low cross from the right byline which
Muheim got to ahead of Bar Galili six yards out. He was chopped down by
the Maccabi defender and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the
spot. Abraham sent Haviv Ohayon the wrong way to applause from those of a
blue persuasion inside the three-year-old, 13,000-capacity Netanya Stadium
located between Tel Aviv and Haifa.
Muheim nearly doubled our advantage immediately but saw his low drive well
saved. It would only be another couple of minutes before we did get goal
number two, however, as Wakefield raced into yards of clear green grass
behind the Maccabi defence before coolly sliding his shot under Ohayon.
Two was almost three midway through the half as the busy Oyahon stretched
out his left leg to expertly deny Abraham, the striker having latched on
to a clever Wakefield through-pass.
The home keeper used his legs to good effect again on 39 minutes after the
bombarding Dasilva got clear and looked set to score. The danger wasn't
over and when Wakefield teed up Scott on the edge of the box, the
midfielder's shot took a hefty deflection taking it over the diving Ohayon.
3-0.
Adi Viveash's youngsters were full value for their half-time lead having
looked a constant menace in attack as well as resolute at the back when
required, and good, solid defending was needed in the opening stages of
the second period as the hosts kept the ball better.
In the first half their only chance came when Lazar Durovic missed his
kick 12 yards out and after the break Jared Thompson made just a couple of
saves, denying sub Omri Haramati on both occasions.
Kasey Palmer was introduced on the hour and he tested Ohayon with a
stinging low drive after we worked a free-kick short, the same man heading
the resulting wide. Mukhtar Ali nearly scored the goal of the game with 15
minutes remaining having pinched possession in midfield, trying an
ambitious lob from fully 35 yards out which the retreating Ohayon did well
to tip over from right underneath his crossbar.
Palmer blasted a shot into the side-netting with 10 to play after the
speedy Wakefield's dangerous cross was only half-cleared. Palmer then
turned creator, slipping Abraham through one-on-one. The striker, now
wearing the captain's armband after Colkett's withdrawal, slotted his
finish past Ohayon.
Aina drew one final save from Ohayon with a powerful header, the final
meaningful action before the whistle sounded on another comprehensive
Youth League victory. There will be full 90-minute re-runs of the game on
Chelsea TV throughout tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7.15am, 11.15am and 10.15pm.
== Manager reaction ==
Reflecting on the performance, Adi Viveash considered it a performance
that was good in patches with some players off their normal game.
'Those players who were good did enough for us to win the game,' he added.
'We had a spell when the goals came and they were good. Some of the
movement was excellent. It was nice to see Charlie Wakefield in his first
start in the UEFA Youth League score a great goal and Tammy Abraham got
his customary couple. We are pleased with the clean sheet, that was
important, but the main objective was three points and we got those.
'We were trying to peak at 2pm in training yesterday and today in the
match, and we didn't quite get there today but we are going to be
interested to see how the boys handle the next stage of this trip because
the recovery is important. There are two big games over the weekend with
the Under-18s in a top-of-the-table clash and the Under-21s versus
Sunderland who are top of our league and it is vital to prepare for those.
'The people here in Israel really looked after us and made us feel very
welcome. It is a place many of us would never normally come to and that is
one of the things Chelsea can give you and we are all grateful for that.'
