Under-18s report: Chelsea 5 Leicester City 0
Sat 28 Nov 2015
Chelsea Under-18s extended their unbeaten run in the Under-18 Premier
League to nine matches this morning (Saturday) as they recorded another
emphatic victory to stay top of the league.
Ike Ugbo moved on to double goalscoring figures for the season as he
notched a first-half brace before Jacob Maddox made it 3-0 before
half-time. In the second half, Mason Mount and substitute Charlie
Wakefield found the back of the net to bring our scoring tally to 23 in
the last four games.
Joe Edwards made three changes from the side that ran out 7-2 victors at
Southampton a fortnight previously, with Richard Nartey, Ruben Sammut and
Isaac Christie-Davies returning to the team.
Sammut was captain for the day in the absence of regular skipper Josh
Grant and he lined up alongside Christie-Davies in central midfield.
Nartey partnered Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back, with Dujon Sterling and
Cole Dasilva at right-back and left-back respectively. Nathan Baxter kept
his place in goal.
In attack, Ugbo continued to lead the line up front following his
hat-trick on the south coast last time out, with the support provided by
Harvey St Clair, Maddox and Mount, the latter operating in the number 10
role.
Sterling fired narrowly wide early on at a chilly Cobham, though chances
at either end were generally limited during an even opening period. The
visitors' captain Darnell Johnson headed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's
inswinging corner off-target, before his centre-back partner Josh Knight
blocked bravely as Ugbo lined up to shoot at goal.
St Clair curled an effort just over the crossbar before the Blues struck
after 20 minutes to establish an advantage in the game. The goal was
crafted by Maddox down the right flank as the tricky midfielder skipped
beyond Michael Kelly on the byline and crossed to give Ugbo a simple
finish from close range.
Edwards's side were buoyed with confidence as a result, with Maddox and
Ugbo combining again to fashion a chance that was turned away off the line
by Knight. Down the other end, as the contest started to open up, Nartey
timed a last-ditch challenge perfectly to thwart Admiral Muskwe, the
league's top goalscorer, following lovely link-up play between Kairo
Mitchell and Elliott Webber.
Dewsbury-Hall then found space in the box to divert a header towards goal
that thumped away off the outside of the post, before Chelsea doubled
their lead. This time the danger was created down the left wing as Dasilva
swung in a right-footed cross towards the back post. Ugbo was alive to the
opportunity, kept himself onside and turned the ball beyond Foxes keeper
Max Bramley for his 11th goal in nine league games this campaign.
Sterling then came close as his header struck the crossbar before we added
a third 11 minutes before the break. 16-year-old Mount played a key role
once more, spraying a raking pass out to the right for Sterling. The
defender had escaped in behind the defence and advanced towards goal
before unselfishly teeing up Maddox to turn in to an unguarded net.
In similar fashion to the first half, it was a quiet restart after the
interval before the league leaders made it 4-0 after 60 minutes. Pressing
high up the field, Maddox won possession and sprung a brilliant instant
pass to Mount down the right channel. The first-year scholar, who netted a
wonderful goal for England's Under-17s last week against Germany, kept his
composure and finished expertly into the far corner.
The midfielder fired over shortly after as the home side intelligently
kept the ball for much of the remainder of the game. Hamza Choudhury
volleyed wide in a rare forward foray for Leicester, though it was Chelsea
celebrating again late on as substitute Wakefield netted within 20 minutes
of his introduction.
The winger cleverly spun away from Alex Pascanu and moved into the box
before finding the bottom corner with a neat left-foot finish. It capped
another dominant display from the youth team as they recorded a fourth
successive clean sheet at home.

After the game, Joe Edwards gave his reflections on another pleasing
morning's work to the official Chelsea website.
'We know Leicester are a strong team that are difficult to beat and
sitting third in the league says a lot about them,' he said. 'Physicality
is a big part of what they do and they were very aggressive when we played
them in the away game. It was important that we imposed our style of play
on them and set the tone early, which we did.
'They're a team that likes to play quite direct so if you give them time
on the ball you will be defending a lot in and around your defensive
third. We didn't want to give them that time on the ball and the way the
boys at the front pressed was a big part of that.
'On the ball, it was one of those days where we were very sharp with lots
of movement and rotation but you still have to convert your chances. Ike
is someone who is doing that for us at the moment; his work-rate today was
outstanding and he fully deserved his goals. To reach double figures
before Christmas is a good achievement for him, especially when you take
into account the games he has missed through injury or international duty.
'What you tend to see in youth football is a lot of these big scorelines
involve goals from both teams, a bit like last weekend at Southampton
where we won 7-2, but today it was a very mature second half performance
and we managed the game with the ball very well.'
The youth team return to action next Saturday 5 December with a home game
against West Ham. Before then, our Under-21s are in action twice as they
host Sunderland at Cobham on Monday (30 November) before facing Celtic at
Aldershot on Friday 4 December. Both games are being screened live on
Chelsea TV. The channel's highlights of this Saturday's Under-18 game can
