Under-21s report: Chelsea 5 Celtic 0
Fri 4 Dec 2015
Chelsea Under-21s booked themselves a place in the Premier League
International Cup quarter-final this evening (Friday) following a
comprehensive victory over Celtic.
It was a blistering start at Aldershot as goals from Mukhtar Ali and Kevin
Wright gave us a 2-0 lead after five minutes, before Charly Musonda and
Kasey Palmer found the back of the net to send us in with a commanding
four-goal lead at the break.
The second period was less eventful, though the hosts did finish the game
with 10 men as Charlie Colkett saw red for two bookings in quick
succession. That did not prevent them from adding a fifth in added time as
Reece Mitchell slotted in a penalty.
Qualifying as runners-up from Group A, we will now face the winners of
Group B in the next round. Porto lead that group but could be pipped for
top spot by Tottenham when the two sides meet each other later in the
month.
There were three changes for the Blues from the side that started the last
game in this European competition as Jamal Blackman, Jake Clarke-Salter
and Palmer came into the starting team. Blackman lined up in goal
protected by a back four of Fankaty Dabo, Fikayo Tomori, Clarke-Salter and
Wright.
Tammy Abraham led the line up front once again supported by Josimar
Quintero, Palmer and captain Musonda, while Colkett partnered Mukhtar Ali
in central midfield.
The hosts knew a win would guarantee them a place in the last-16 and so
started with the intent of a side that wanted to get the job done quickly.
After a bright opening, they were in front after just four minutes as Ali
supplied the finish at the end of an excellent move. Musonda had rolled a
pass left to the overlapping full-back Wright, whose low centre was
prodded in by Ali for his fifth goal of the season.
It was 2-0 within a minute of the restart as skipper Musonda once more
caused danger down the left. The young Belgian found Palmer inside with a
neat pass and, despite being denied by goalkeeper Leonardo Fasan, the
loose ball was lashed into the bottom corner by Wright. It was the
19-year-old's first goal since he signed as a scholar almost
three-and-a-half years ago.
The hosts were confident and in the ascendancy, hungry to show their
qualities after a difficult start to the campaign. Fasan excelled with a
brilliant save down low to his left to push Palmer's bending effort behind
before Abraham was gifted a sight at goal and Fasan required to make the
stop once more.
However, the visiting stopper was unable to keep the deficit at two for
long and two further goals in eight minutes put us in an extremely
commanding position. Ali and Quintero combined well down the right to
deliver a low cross for Musonda to sweep in at the back post, netting his
second goal of the season.
Palmer then got himself on the scoresheet before the midway point of the
half, picking himself up having been cynically brought down on the edge of
the box before placing a perfect strike into the top corner.
The relentless intensity of our pressing from the front continued to give
Celtic a headache as they struggled to get out of their own half, although
Daniel Higgins did warm the palms of Blackman with a swerving drive that
the keeper did well to watch and hold. Down the other end, Palmer's
powerful shot from almost 40 yards was tipped behind by Fasan as the Blues
ended a dominant half with a sizeable advantage on the scoreboard.
The second period was a far less intense affair, although the hosts were
still hunting for goals and Colkett brought a smart save from Fasan as his
sweetly-struck volley fizzed towards goal. Abraham dragged a shot just
wide and Musonda was thwarted by Fasan before substitute Isaac
Christie-Davies fired over from the resulting corner.
Alex Kiwomya was also introduced off the bench for the last 15 minutes and
came close to making an instant impact as he sped away down the right
flank, though his cutback towards Musonda was read well by the defender.
The hosts finished the game with 10 men as a fairly uneventful half
concluded with a flurry of cards. Musonda and Ali both went into the
referee's notebook before Colkett picked up two bookings in quick
succession, culminating in the midfielder heading for an early shower and
the Blues playing the final eight minutes with a numerical disadvantage.
Yet that failed to spoil a really good evening for Andy Myers's side, who
added a fifth in stoppage time as substitute Mitchell was upended in the
box and stepped up to convert from the spot.

Andy Myers, who has taken charge of the team in this competition this
term, reflected afterwards on a pleasing night for the team with a place
in the knockout round secured.
'I'm very pleased, especially with the first half,' he told the official
Chelsea website. 'The second half took a little bit of the shine away from
it for me because we lost a bit of our discipline and shape. I know that's
being a big negative after winning 5-0, although to come away with a clean
sheet was a massive thing for us.
'Mukhtar Ali had a very good game and I have to give a word as well to our
centre-backs Fikayo and Jake, two 19-year-olds playing up against a
29-year-old striker tonight and dealing with that very well.
'We look forward to seeing who we get in the next round now. Whether it's
Tottenham or Porto, it will be a tough game with the possibility of coming
up against players a few years older than us again but that's great for
development because we all know you don't always play against players your
own age in the first team.'
