Under-18s report: Chelsea 4 West Ham 0
Sat 5 Dec 2015
Chelsea Under-18s made it 10 games unbeaten in the Under-18 Premier League
as they went four points clear at the top of the table with victory over
West Ham this morning (Saturday).
Jacob Maddox opened the scoring after just 70 seconds, though it took
until nine minutes into the second period for the youngsters to find a
second as Miro Muehim finished confidently one-on-one. Trevoh Chalobah and
Ike Ugbo also netted to cap another dominant display from the reigning
southern league champions.
There were four changes from the side that were 5-0 winners over Leicester
City a week previously, with Jared Thompson, Ali Suljic, Charlie Wakefield
and Muheim returning to the team.
Wakefield and Muehim provided the wide attacking support for striker Ike
Ugbo, while Thompson started in goal protected by a back four consisting
of Dujon Sterling, Chalobah, Cole Dasilva and Suljic. Ruben Sammut and
Mason Mount lined up in midfield with Maddox operating in the number 10
role.
Despite the one-hour delay to kick-off, the Blues showed no signs of
sluggishness early on as they fired themselves in front after just 70
seconds. Ugbo rose high to flick a high ball forward to the overlapping
Sterling, who appeared to be pulled back as he bore down on goal. However,
Maddox was not prepared to wait for the referee's decision as he collected
the loose ball and slotted his shot low inside the near post for his fifth
goal of the campaign.
Buoyed by an excellent start, the young Blues controlled proceedings as
they passed the ball around crisply despite the blustery conditions.
Wakefield fired off-target after cutting in from the left following a
brilliant diagonal pass from Muheim, before the Swiss youth international
was denied by a brilliant fingertip save from goalkeeper Sam Howes as the
17-year-old's free-kick dipped dangerously towards goal.
Howes remained the busier of the two goalkeepers as he held Ugbo's
close-range header before producing an instinctive stop to save from Ugbo
again as the England Under-17 forward combined neatly with Mount to
fashion a sight at goal.
Down the other end, former Chelsea scholar Dan Kemp blazed a volleyed
effort high over the bar, though the game continued to follow a similar
pattern as we pushed for a second goal. Howes pushed Muheim's low
left-footed strike behind before Dasilva teed up Ugbo with a great chance
following a perfect cross from the left, though the striker's header flew
just wide.
Kemp brought a routine save from Thompson moments after the restart and
Howes shovelled Mount's fierce strike behind before the league leaders
doubled their advantage after 54 minutes.
After some profligacy in front of goal in the first half, this was a
moment of ruthless incisiveness as Mount broke away from midfield and
threaded a perfect pass forward to Muheim with the outside of his right
boot. Muheim did the rest, settling himself with a touch before placing
the ball into the far corner with a confident finish.
Maddox, Mount and Ugbo combined intricately on the edge of the box before
fashioning a chance for Wakefield, though the winger's low drive was
diverted over the crossbar by Oscar Borg to deny the Blues a sensational
third.
Yet the home side could not be kept out for much longer as Mount turned
provider once again with a dangerous swinging corner from the left that
Chalobah stooped low to head beyond Howes for his third goal of the
campaign.
Jahmal Hector-Ingram lashed a drive into the side-netting in a rare foray
forward for the visitors but it was soon 4-0 to the Blues as Ugbo prodded
in from close range following good work from Wakefield down the left
flank. It was the striker's 12th goal of the season and our 27th goal in
the last five league games. Just as pleasing for Edwards and assistant
Jody Morris will have been another clean sheet, their fifth in a row at
home.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards praised the mentality of his players to come out
comprehensively on top against the only side to have beaten them so far
this season. Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, he
said: 'I was really disappointed after the game away at West Ham earlier
in the season.
'We were second to everything and did not show the character or desire
that is needed in a Chelsea versus West Ham match. I think the boys have
been looking forward to putting that right ever since and that's been
evident in our preparations throughout the week and with the way we
started the game.
'We talk a lot in the Academy about the transition and how quickly we can
react to press the ball when we lose it. Often the problem with young
players is doing that on a consistent basis but I think we've seen so many
players taking on board those roles we're asking of them and the levels of
work required in recent weeks. It's been key to our current run of
results, performances and scorelines and it's why we're playing most of
our games at the minute mostly in the oppostion half, not allowing teams
any time to string passages of passing together.'
The youth team are not in league action again until Saturday 19 December
so their next action comes in the FA Youth Cup third round against
Huddersfield Town. It is a competition the Blues have won in the past two
seasons, though the manager admits the form of his league side will give
him and Jody Morris a selection headache in the build-up.
'It's a nightmare for me and Jody! People joke with us how difficult it is
to pick the Youth Cup team but at the moment it's so difficult to pick the
Saturday team, let alone the Youth Cup team.
'We have the likes of Tammy Abraham, Jake Clarke-Salter, Jay Dasilva,
Fikayo Tomori, Kyle Scott to consider, plus so many lads on such a good
run of form for us at the moment. We'll start to focus on that game after
the Under-19 match against Porto in the week but, whichever squad we
select, I just hope we can transfer this current run of form into that
competition.'
