UEFA Youth League report: Chelsea 0 Porto 0
Wed 9 Dec 2015
Chelsea Under-19s rounded off their group stage campaign in the UEFA Youth
League with a home draw and another clean sheet as they progressed to the
last-16 with their unbeaten record this season intact.
The young Blues had secured top spot in Group G and progression to the
knockout round with three points in Israel on matchday five so it was the
visitors playing for the high stakes on a sunny afternoon at the training
ground. The Portuguese side needed to win and hope that Dynamo Kiev
dropped points against Maccabi in the other group game in order to finish
the campaign in second place.
There were seven changes in personnel and a change in shape from the side
that started in the 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv a fortnight
previously in this competition. Adi Viveash lined his team up in a 3-4-2-1
system with Ike Ugbo starting up front following a strong first half of
the campaign with the youth team that has garnered a dozen league goals.
Bradley Collins came into the side between the sticks protected by a back
three consisting of Joseph Colley, Trevoh Chalobah and Jake Clarke-Salter,
while Mukhtar Ali and Isaac Christie-Davies provided the central midfield
cover. Jay Dasilva and Charlie Wakefield were given the task of giving the
side width on the left and right wing respectively, with captain Kasey
Palmer and Josimar Quintero operating centrally further up the field.
It was a slow-burning start to proceedings as both teams struggled to test
the opposing goalkeeper during a mostly tactical opening spell. Palmer
raced on to the ball in an early sight at goal but goalkeeper Diogo Costa
sped off his line to smother at the Chelsea captain's feet, before Palmer
fired high over the bar from distance.
It took until midway through the opening period for Porto to test Collins
for the first time as Ruben Macedo's low drive was pushed away by the
keeper diving low down to his right. The overlapping Fernando then found
time and space to deliver from the right and pick out Macedo in the box,
though the forward's effort on this occasion lacked any accuracy and flew
off-target.
Joao Cardoso had a close-range shot well blocked following a corner
delivered from the right and David Sualehe's rising drive was too high but
the visitors were buoyed as they started to take a hold of the contest.
Down the other end, Palmer missed the target with a low strike that
trickled just wide following Wakefield's infield pass, yet it was Porto
looking more likely to grab the opener before the break.
Chalobah did well to wait and time his sliding perfectly to take the sting
out of Tony De Beatidi Djim's shot, while Macedo lashed an effort into the
side netting and Bruno Costa rifled over as Porto finished the half with a
flurry of opportunities but without the breakthrough goal.
Viveash made a double switch at the break as Mason Mount and Jacob Maddox
entered the fray in place of Palmer and Quintero. Mount made an instant
impact as he threaded through a pass in behind for Ugbo to chase, though
the delivery carried slightly too much weight and the goalkeeper won the
race across the turf.
Costa continued his busy start to the second half as he denied Ugbo at the
near post with a smart stop before gathering Clarke-Salter's header from
the resulting corner at the second attempt. There were appeals for a
penalty shortly after as Maddox went down under a challenge in the box,
though the officials from Iceland waved play on and Mount's deflected
strike flicked wide.
Collins denied Macedo before Colley produced a brilliant last-ditch
challenge to thwart Moreto Cassama after the Swedish defender's header
back to Collins lacked the power to reach his goalkeeper.
The Blues rather fortuitously fashioned the best chance of the afternoon
after 77 minutes as Mount's pass forward deflected perfectly into the path
of Ali. However, the midfielder's low drive ricocheted back off the
outside of the near post and away to safety.
It was to prove the final action of note as the holders finished the group
stage campaign with a home point and a fourth clean sheet in six Youth
League matches this term. They will now face a home knockout tie in the
last-16 in February, with further details to be confirmed in the New Year.

After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on a pleasing afternoon's work from
a young side and a successful group stage campaign. Speaking to the
official Chelsea website, he said: 'It's an excellent achievement for us
to keep a clean sheet against last season's quarter-finalists with a
younger team out.
'We looked at a different shape and that's important to open the players
up to the idea of playing in different systems. The back three were really
good and Trevoh Chalobah in particular had an outstanding game. We've now
had four clean sheets in our six group games and another one to follow on
from Celtic in the Under-21s so that's good for our confidence because
we've obviously been struggling in that area this season.
'I felt we probably deserved to win the game in the end. We were able to
introduce the vibrancy of Jacob Maddox and Mason Mount in the second half
and our performance in general was very good. Some of the players are
really starting to put down a marker for the squad in the last-16 and that
competition is great for us.
'I've been really pleased with the campaign overall. We've had a younger
group this season and a tougher group; the fact that a team of Porto's
calibre, who we haven't beaten over two games, have gone out tells you a
lot. It was one of the most pleasing development games we've had all
season today and, although we put this competition on the back-burner for
now, we look forward to the knockout round in February.'
