U18南區聯賽第17輪 https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2015/12/ under-18s-report--brighton-2-chelsea-2.html Under-18s report: Brighton 2 Chelsea 2 Sat 19 Dec 2015 Chelsea Under-18s came from behind to earn a point on the road at Brighton this morning (Saturday)... The Blues took the lead early in the second half as Ike Ugbo netted from the spot but Brighton turned the game around to lead 2-1 and looked as if they were holding on to all three points before Joseph Colley's header found the back of the net deep into added time. Four of those who featured in the midweek FA Youth Cup victory over Huddersfield Town started on the south coast as Joe Edwards made full use of his squad for the final game of the calendar year. Jared Thompson came in between the sticks protected by a back four of Luke McCormick, Colley, Richard Nartey and Cole Dasilva. Following his goal against the Terriers, Ugbo kept his place in the team as he joined Jacob Maddox and Miro Muheim in supporting Lewis Walker, a trialist, up front. Ruben Sammut and Mason Mount partnered each other in central midfield. The hosts enjoyed the better chances in the opening exchanges, with Jordan Maguire-Drew going closest following a dangerous run, however his effort at goal was hooked off the line to safety by the recovering Dasilva. Down the other end, Nartey headed narrowly over from a teasing corner and Ugbo saw a low strike well saved by keeper Bailey Vose after cutting inside from the left flank. Nartey was back in more familiar territory moments later as he was needed to block bravely a shot from Reece Meekums that arrowed towards Thompson's goal, while the defender intervened again just before the break to divert Maguire-Drew's low effort behind. Edwards made a switch on the right flank as schoolboy Dujon Sterling replaced Muheim and the Under-16 defender made an instant impact as the young Blues were awarded a penalty a few minutes after the restart. Similar to his positive impact from the bench in midweek, Sterling charged towards goal from the right and was brought down just inside the box. Ugbo stepped up from 12 yards out and beat Vose for his 14th goal of the campaign. Falling behind sparked the young Seagulls into life and Thompson had to be brave at the feet of Maguire-Drew to thwart the striker inside the six-yard box. However, our lead was intact for less than 10 minutes as Danny Mandriou provided a neat side-foot finish from close range following a good move down the left. Maguire-Drew went close to firing his side in front but slipped at the crucial moment, though that failed to deter the young forward as he got his goal just after the hour mark with a curling free-kick beyond Thompson from 20 yards out. The Blues were looking to continue a 10-match unbeaten run in the league and changed their shape as they pushed for a late leveller, reverting to three at the back. Jordan Cox fired a free-kick just wide but it was the Blues pouring forward late on as tempers frayed in a fiery finale. Vose made a string of saves that looked like they would preserve a point for the hosts, collecting a header from Ugbo and then flicking an effort behind with a trailing foot. Maguire-Drew came within inches of wrapping up the points with a long-range strike that flew just wide before Edwards's league leaders snatched a point in dramatic fashion deep into added time. Mount provided the set-piece delivery, floating an inviting cross into the six-yard box which Colley rose highest to meet and divert into the far top corner to keep the Blues top of the league and maintain their unbeaten record into 2016. == Manager reaction == After the game, Joe Edwards reflected on a hard-fought point won and praised his players for displaying their character on a difficult morning. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said: 'We lost here last season and it was one of the toughest games we've had at home so far this year as well. 'They are a good side, difficult to break down and aggressive in the tackle so these games often become quite competitive which is what you want. We knew we would have to be at our best and I thought we started quite well but we didn't create too many clear-cut chances in the game. 'We got the goal through the penalty but then they grew in confidence, getting on top and probably deserving to come back into the game. Then it becomes quite a battle and it's about our players showing that other side of their game. 'We've had a lot of games this season where we've been able to show our technical qualities but today, especially in the second half, we had to show our character. I was really pleased with how the lads took over on the pitch and made it about the result. We haven't played that great but we wanted to maintain this unbeaten run so to score an equaliser so late on is very satisfying.'
