Under-21s report: Southampton 1 Chelsea 0
Wed 6 Jan 2016
Chelsea Under-21s were narrowly beaten by Southampton in the Under-21
Premier League Cup round-of-32 this evening (Wednesday).
The Blues controlled proceedings in the first half and created a number of
opportunities that they were unable to convert into an opening goal. They
were made to regret those missed opportunities after the restart as Ryan
Seager struck seven minutes into the second period to send the Saints into
the last-16.
Adi Viveash made three changes from the side that beat Middlesbrough in
our last Under-21 action back in December as Joseph Colley, Kevin Wright
and Reece Mitchell returned to the side. Colley made his Under-21 debut
and partnered Jake Clarke-Salter in a back four also comprising Kevin
Wright and Fikayo Tomori. Bradley Collins continued in goal.
Captain Charlie Colkett partnered Mukhtar Ali in midfield, while Mitchell,
Kasey Palmer and Charly Musonda provided the attacking support for striker
Tammy Abraham.
This was our first involvement of the season in the domestic Under-21
knockout competition and we started brightly on a chilly January evening
on the south coast. Colkett's early shot was bravely charged down and
Palmer fired a volley high over Fraser Forster's crossbar after Colkett
had pulled his corner back to the midfielder on the edge of the box.
Musonda shot over and Clarke-Salter headed Colkett's inswinging free-kick
delivery wide before Forster was called into action to claw Abraham's
header away and then Mitchell was denied by a block on the line as he
followed in.
Viveash's side were enjoying success pressing high and winning the ball in
advanced areas of the field. Mitchell stole possession in one such example
and teed up Musonda, although the young Belgian skewed his strike over
again, before Palmer's effort was deflected inches wide of the post.
The Saints grew stronger as the half wore on and threatened after 35
minutes as Jake Hesketh drilled a shot into the side-netting from a narrow
angle. However, despite a dominant first-half display from the visitors,
the game remained goalless at the interval.
The hosts restarted strongly and came close to opening the scoring as Sam
McQueen exploited a slip at the back and charged down the right channel.
His final product let him down as he curled his effort over Collins' bar,
however it was 1-0 to Southampton moments later. Seager escaped in behind
the back four for the first time in the evening and showed his composure
to round the goalkeeper and slot into the back of the net.
Alex Kiwomya was introduced shortly afterwards and his impact was
immediate as he supplied a teasing cross into the box from the right
flank. Palmer was on hand as he supported from midfield but his effort on
the volley failed to trouble Forster once again.
The Chelsea number 10 continued to look one of the likelier of the Chelsea
ranks to pull his side back into the tie and he was thwarted by Forster
again after the hour mark. Having controlled the ball with a lovely first
touch, his quickfire effort looked destined for the bottom corner before
the first team goalkeeper's intervention.
The game opened up even more as the Blues pushed for a leveller and the
Saints were content to soak up the pressure and strike on the break.
Collins pushed away a free-kick swung in from the left before Abraham
blasted over from close range after a hanging cross from the right.
Abraham had one last chance before the death as he got on the end of
Clarke-Salter's cross and diverted his attempt towards the far corner
however, with Forster beaten, the ball was hooked off the line by Alfie
Jones and the home side were able to claim the win and a place in the next
round.
== Manager reaction ==
After the game, Viveash reflected on a performance that deserved to
culminate in a winning result for his side. Speaking to the official
Chelsea website, he said: 'It was a very positive performance and the only
downside is that we've lost. We totally dominated the game and I'm not
quite sure how we haven't won. The players will be a little bit baffled
tonight but that's football sometimes.
'Their back four and goalkeeper made some unbelievable blocks and saves
and they did the old-fashioned defending really well. Forster makes a
brilliant save from Kasey in the second half and then they kick one off
the line in the last minute, which is when you're thinking it might not be
our night.
'We're disappointed with the goal we conceded because we didn't put enough
pressure on the ball and we gave Seager the little sniff that is all he
needs because we know he's one of the best strikers at this level.
However, we played some fantastic football and coming off the back of the
Middlesbrough game before Christmas, we've put together two really good
footballing performances. If we play half as well at Tottenham on Monday
in the league then we've got a great chance of getting something from the
game.'
