Under-18s report: Chelsea 6 Reading 2
Sat 2 Apr 2016
Chelsea Under-18s came from behind to claim all three league points in
emphatic style at Cobham this morning (Saturday).
Harrison Bennett's finish had given Reading a slender advantage at the
break but three goals in 17 minutes turned the game around as Miro Muheim,
Jacob Maddox and Ike Ugbo all netted in quick succession.
McCormick bagged his first goal of the campaign from the penalty spot and
then goals from Maddox and Ugbo made it 6-1 before Sam Smith reduced the
deficit late on.
Joe Edwards made seven changes from the side that drew 2-2 with West Ham
in their last league outing a fortnight previously, with just McCormick,
Maddox, Mason Mount and Ugbo retaining places in the team. The manager
reverted back to a 3-5-2 system used often this term as Dujon Sterling,
Joseph Colley and captain Josh Grant comprised the back three, protecting
Nathan Baxter in goal.
Ugbo continued to lead the line up front, while McCormick, Isaac
Christie-Davies, Maddox and Mount operated from the central midfield
areas, the latter duo more advanced. Charlie Wakefield and Muheim started
at right wing-back and left wing-back respectively.
This was the fourth meeting between the sides this season and the Royals
included nine of their starters from the FA Youth Cup quarter-final at
Stamford Bridge. The hosts, meanwhile, had just three as Baxter, Wakefield
and Christie-Davies all started.
The Blues started brightly in the Cobham Saturday sunshine as Muheim
tested visiting keeper Luke Southwood early on before Ugbo fired into the
side netting from a tight angle moments later.
However, it was the visitors in front with 11 minutes on the clock as they
found the back of the net with their first meaningful attack. Bennett
advanced from midfield and took aim at goal from 25 yards out, bending a
strike beyond the despairing dive of Baxter and into the top far corner.
Edwards's side responded swiftly as Grant's header was cleared off the
line but Reading came close to doubling their lead immediately down the
other end. Baxter, racing off his line to deal with an inviting ball over
the top, could head away only as far as Conor Davis, though the
midfielder's drive from distance flew narrowly wide.
Mount then brought a stop from Southwood and Baxter denied Tyler Frost as
the game opened up with chances carved out by both sides. Smith fired
inches wide of the far post with a low effort having been picked out
cleverly by Danny Loader as the Royals remained a threat, though it was
the Blues going close to a late leveller in the half as Mount's arrowing
drive was bravely headed to safety by goalscorer Bennett.
The young Blues restarted with a change in both personnel and shape as
Trevoh Chalobah entered the fray and the hosts reverted to a 4-2-3-1. They
reaped the rewards quickly as three goals within 17 minutes of the restart
turned the game on its head.
The equaliser came after 54 minutes and Maddox was credited with playing a
significant role as he advanced down the right flank, twisting and turning
away from two defenders. The loose ball fell kindly for Ugbo and, although
his low strike thumped back off the post, Muheim was on hand to beat the
keeper on the rebound.
Maddox added a goal of his own on the hour mark, exploiting a weak pass
back to the goalkeeper from defence. The 17-year-old was alert to the
opportunity, beat Southwood to the loose ball and then had the simple task
of slotting into an unguarded net for his 10th goal of the campaign.
The advantage was extended two minutes later as the hosts looked a threat
every time they advanced into the Reading half. This time it was a
left-sided advance as Mount skipped away from a challenge before
delivering dangerously into the box. His centre found Wakefield, whose
left-footed shot was pushed away by Southwood only into the path of Ugbo.
The striker prodded the ball over the line for his 20th goal of the season.
Baxter read the danger well to smother the ball at the feet of Davis but
we continued to look hungry for goals and had the opportunity to add a
fourth after 72 minutes. Colley was upended by a rash tackle in the box
and McCormick stepped up to tuck the ball into the corner for his first
goal of the season.
Maddox and Ugbo added their second individual goals of the morning moments
later, the former heading into the bottom corner from a wonderful delivery
by Grant, before Ugbo lashed in a close-range finish.
Smith reduced the deficit late on as his rising drive beat Baxter via the
inside frame of the goal, though it did little to dampen the high spirits
of the hosts as they secured a second victory in the elite play-off league.
