FA Youth Cup report: Manchester United 1 Chelsea 5
Fri 22 Jan 2016
Chelsea Under-18s booked a place in the FA Youth Cup fifth round with a
deserved victory in the north-west this evening (Friday).
The holders now face a trip to AFC Wimbledon after goals from Ike Ugbo,
Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Jay Dasilva and Mukhtar Ali capped off another
five-star display.
Joe Edwards made three changes from the side that beat Huddersfield Town
in the third round last month as Josh Grant, Kyle Scott and Ike Ugbo came
into the starting team. Grant, making his debut in the competition, joined
Fikayo Tomori, Trevoh Chalobah and Dasilva in a four-man defence
protecting Nathan Baxter in goal.
Scott partnered Ali in central midfield, with Charlie Wakefield, Mount and
Ugbo providing the attacking support for striker and skipper Abraham.
The young Blues started brightly on a mild evening in Greater Manchester
and Tomori headed an early chance narrowly over the crossbar of goalkeeper
Oliver Byrne within moments of kick-off. Wakefield then forced a save from
the home stopper, who did well to dive low to his right and push away the
wideman's drive after neat build-up play involving Mount and Abraham.
Ugbo saw a shot blocked well by home captain Ro-Shaun Williams and Abraham
fired narrowly wide of the near post before the visitors struck the opener
after 19 minutes. Following the majority of their advances coming down the
right flank, the breakthrough was forged down the left as Dasilva, who
bagged a hat-trick of assists in the previous round against Huddersfield,
swung in a teasing cross. Abraham rose unchallenged and brought a
point-blank save from the keeper but Ugbo was on hand to nod in the
rebound.
Edwards's side were largely dominant in possession for the remainder of
the half, although they struggled to turn their control into a sustained
serious threat on the home goal. Abraham had a powerful low free-kick
cleared from danger and Tomori headed over following Mount's flighted
set-piece delivery from the left, before Dasilva caused panic in the
six-yard box again which United eventually managed to scramble clear.
However, the Reds were unable to keep us at bay for long as the holders
struck in stoppage time to take a two-goal lead into the interval. Abraham
received a sharp pass from Mount with his back to goal and plenty of work
still to do, however he spun instantly and lashed a drive beyond Byrne via
the inside of the post.
Charlie Scott fired wide and Abraham prodded over as the second period
started at a slower tempo from both sides before bursting into life with
two goals in a minute midway through the half. United initially reduced
the deficit as Scott fired past Baxter from the edge of the box but their
reprieve lasted less than 60 seconds as the Blues restored their two-goal
lead almost immediately.
Racing down the other end, the bright Mount got on the end of a quick move
forward and finished neatly past the goalkeeper with a clipped finish
following a scramble in the box.
Baxter almost played himself into trouble with a miskicked clearance that
he just about managed to get away with but chances continued to come down
the other end as Abraham shot just off-target once more. However, with
seven minutes remaining, the Blues sealed the win as the impressive
Dasilva floated a right-footed effort over the stranded Byrne and into the
far top corner.
There was time remaining for Chelsea to complete a comprehensive Cup
victory as Ali poked into an unguarded goal from a few yards out in the
final minutes of normal time. The goal made it 11 scored in the opening
two Youth Cup ties this campaign for the holders.
