Under-21s report: Tottenham 2 Chelsea 5
Thu 28 Jan 2016
Chelsea Under-21s booked themselves a place in the semi-finals of the
Premier League International Cup with victory over Tottenham.
The young Blues stormed into a 3-0 lead within 35 minutes as goals from
Reece Mitchell, Kasey Palmer and an amazing long-range strike from Ola
Aina gave Andy Myers's side a commanding half-time advantage. Despite
Tottenham bringing life to the game with two goals after the restart, the
visitors sealed their passage to the last four when Tammy Abraham bagged a
brace late on.
There were five changes from the side that started at the same ground
against the same opponents 17 days previously in a thrilling 5-4 league
victory. Aina and Kevin Wright returned to the back four alongside captain
Fankaty Dabo and Jake Clarke-Salter, the latter having scored the
stoppage-time winner in the meeting earlier in the month.
Jordan Houghton, recently returned from a loan spell at Gillingham, lined
up alongside Josimar Quintero in central midfield, with Charlie Wakefield,
Palmer and Mitchell providing the attacking support for Abraham. Bradley
Collins continued in goal.
The visitors dominated proceedings from the start and raced into a
two-goal lead within the opening 10 minutes. Abraham fired a warning sign
early on with an improvised overhead kick that brought a routine stop from
goalkeeper Tom Glover, though the Spurs stopper could do little to prevent
the opener moments later.
The hosts had already been caught out twice trying to play out from the
back and this time they were punished ruthlessly as Houghton stole
possession and fed Mitchell, who rifled his drive into the back of the net
from the edge of the box via the underside of the bar.
Our advantage was doubled four minutes later as Palmer netted his 11th
goal of the season in style, jinxing beyond two defenders before producing
a cultured side-foot finish inside the far post that once again left
Glover helpless.
The game soon settled after the frantic start and clear-cut chances were
limited as the hosts tried to play their way back into the tie.
Clarke-Salter headed straight at Glover from a right-sided free-kick and
Abraham prodded narrowly wide before the Blues made it 3-0 in spectacular
fashion 10 minutes before the break.
Aina picked up the ball just inside our half, took aim at goal from the
halfway line and watched as his looping effort flew into the top corner
beyond the despairing dive of the goalkeeper. It was the 19-year-old
defender's second goal of the season and without doubt the most memorable
of his Academy career.
There was work to do for Collins as the interval loomed and he stood tall
to save from Emmanuel Sonupe as the wideman advanced down the right flank,
preserving our three-goal lead.
Tottenham restarted brightly as Miller fired over with a good opportunity
before a flurry of Spurs corners and blocked shots from within the 18-yard
box followed. Ugo Ehiogu's side soon reduced the scoreline deficit with 54
minutes on the clock as Walkes's deflected drive beat Collins at the near
post.
The goal gave them hope but also handed the Blues an opportunity to hurt
their opponents on the break. Wakefield was denied by an excellent stop as
Glover utilised his feet to kick the winger's low effort away from danger,
while Palmer fired over after taking a smart pass from Quintero under his
control with a neat first touch.
The home side were enjoying their best attacking spell of the game as
Collins denied Walker-Peters with a smart low stop and Anthony Georgiou
volleyed over after Walkes's cross from the left. They were soon
celebrating a second goal that teed up a grandstand finale as Miller
headed a deep delivery back across goal and Collins was unable to keep it
out.
A few nervy moments followed at the back, though Abraham calmed any
lingering doubts with a late brace, the first a simple finish from close
range to convert Dabo's low centre and the second an effort that squirmed
beyond Glover at the near post in stoppage time. They were the 18-year-old
striker's 20th and 21st goals of the season and meant our youngsters
struck five away at Spurs for the second time in three weeks.
The result means the young Blues progress from the quarter-finals, where
the three remaining ties see Sunderland take on PSV Eindhoven, Benfica
face Porto and Villarreal meet Athletic Bilbao.
The Under-21s return to action in the Under-21 Premier League this Sunday
31 January when they travel to take on league leaders Sunderland for an
11.45am kick-off. Before then, our youth team have the opportunity to seal
the southern league title with victory against second-placed Reading on
Saturday 30 January.
== Manager reaction ==
Andy Myers, who is taking charge of the team in this competition, watched
a game of fluctuating fortunes but was pleased with the resilience from
the players that set-up a strong finish to the encounter.
'It was a tale of two halves,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'We
had the first half and we said at half-time it was important that we don't
concede early in the second half but we did and Spurs got their tails up.
They had a go at us, got the second goal and we had to dig deep and keep
defending but credit to the boys for staying in there. To get our third
goal against the run of play took the wind out of their sails and we went
on to win.
'The game opened up in the second half and there was a lot of space for
both teams, sometimes too much, but if Tammy gets that space you fancy him
to score and his second was a very good finish.
'I am pleased with the boys' application and when we start these
competitions, although it is development we want to win them.'
