https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/02/ fa-youth-cup-report--chelsea-v-reading.html FA Youth Cup report: Chelsea 2 Reading 1 news Fri 26 Feb 2016 Chelsea Under-18s booked themselves a place in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals for the seventh year in a row after a narrow victory over Reading at Stamford Bridge. Tammy Abraham had spurned a great chance to send us in 1-0 up at the break as his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Luke Southwood, though goals from Jay Dasilva and then Abraham put us into a comfortable lead. Reading reduced the deficit through Axel Andresson, having missed a penalty of their own seconds before. The hosts missed a second penalty of their own deep into stoppage time but held strong in the latter stages to set up a two-legged semi-final against Blackburn Rovers. The Blues will play at Ewood Park in the first leg, before the second leg is held at the Bridge once again. There were two changes from the side that triumphed at AFC Wimbledon in the fifth round as Ruben Sammut and Isaac Christie-Davies replaced Mason Mount and Ike Ugbo in the starting team. Joe Edwards opted to continue with three at the back, though the variation further up the field was altered slightly as he went with a midfield box and a lone striker. Abraham was chosen to lead the line after 21 goals in 25 starts so far this term, while Trevoh Chalobah, Fikayo Tomori and Jake Clarke-Salter continued in defence. Mukhtar Ali and Ruben Sammut started at the base of central midfield with Kyle Scott and Isaac Christie-Davies operating as number tens. Dasilva and Charlie Wakefield operated at left wing-back and right wing-back respectively. Reading were unchanged from their victory over Wolves at Molineux in the last round; forwards Josh Barrett and Sam Smith, with 28 goals between them this term, led the line up top and it was Smith with the game's first sight at goal after just two minutes as the striker fired over from a narrow angle. Christie-Davies saw a header cleared after rising highest to meet Ali's corner from the right before Tyler Frost drilled a low shot narrowly wide from 20 yards out as the opening exchanges remained even. Ali brought a routine save from visiting stopper Southwood after 20 minutes as the keeper dived to his right to collect a rising drive but the Blues continued to grow in ascendancy as the half wore on. Abraham blazed over the bar at the end of a neat passing move and Scott struck wide of the far post, while Southwood collected a high ball at the second attempt as Christie-Davies aimed for the top corner with a left-sided free-kick. Wakefield went close with a brilliant individual run from his own half that ended with a strike inches wide before the wideman earned the hosts their best opportunity of the half as another dangerous run from the right flank was ended unfairly by Axel Andresson's clumsy late tackle. The linesman flagged for a penalty, though Abraham's effort from 12 yards was excellently kept out by Southwood. The Chelsea number nine ought to have been handed a second chance from the spot as he was brought down by Southwood after nicking the ball beyond the onrushing goalkeeper, though the referee had no intention of pointing to the spot for a second time and waved away the home appeals as the sides went in level at the break. The tie resumed with a change from Edwards as Under-16 Dujon Sterling replaced Wakefield at right wing-back and the schoolboy defender's impact was swiftly felt. He teed up Scott to strike over from the edge of the box moments after the restart before playing a significant part in the game's opening goal after 58 minutes. Picking the ball up on the right flank, the England youth international drove forward before firing a low effort at goal from a tight angle. Southwood got a hand down low to push the ball away but could only parry into the path of Dasilva, who found the back of the net with a close-range finish for his second goal in four days following his strike for our Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday. The young Blues continued to dominate a game they had controlled for large spells. Southwood saved Abraham's shot on the spin and then the striker fired wide before he finally found the back of the net with 69 minutes on the clock. Scott initiated the attack with a quick free-kick down the right, Christie-Davies delivered from the byline and Abraham found space in the six-yard box to place a header into the corner. It was his 22nd goal of the season to date and fifth in the Youth Cup campaign. Clarke-Salter headed narrowly over from Ali's free-kick before the Royals were given the chance to halve the deficit from the penalty spot. Clarke-Salter was penalised and Frost stepped up, though his effort was too high and rebounded away off the top of the crossbar. However, it was 2-1 less than a minute later as an inswinging corner from the right caused problems in the box and Andresson headed inside the near post. The visitors were buoyed by the goal and went in search of a leveller that would take the tie to extra-time. Frost fired dangerously across the face of goal and Baxter did well to gather another high ball into the box. With six minutes of added time indicated, there was plenty of work remaining for the holders. Yet their experience and nous of these big games showed through as they kept Reading away from Baxter's goal and continued to create chances. Another penalty kick was spurned as Southwood saved again, this time from Ali, before the keeper did excellently to deny substitute Jacob Maddox deep into stoppage time. Despite the late drama, it was the Blues who progressed to the last-four once again. The youth team return to action next weekend when they begin their quest to be crowned Under-18 Premier League champions. They travel to Manchester City on Saturday 5 March for an 11am kick-off that will be screened live on Chelsea TV. Before then, our Under-21s take on Southampton at St Mary's in the Under-21 Premier League on Monday 29 February, also live on Chelsea TV. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/02/ fa-youth-cup-reaction--focused-and-disciplined.html FA Youth Cup reaction: Focused and disciplined Sat 27 Feb 2016 Chelsea Under-18s set up a semi-final date with Blackburn Rovers in the FA Youth Cup following a 2-1 victory over Reading at Stamford Bridge last night (Friday). In a game that saw three penalties missed, it was goals from Jay Dasilva and Tammy Abraham that took us through to a seventh successive semi-final in the competition. On six of those seven occasions, we have booked a place in the final. After the game, manager Joe Edwards reflected on a contest which his side controlled for large periods, with profligacy in front of goal the key difference between a far more comfortable scoreline. While perhaps not at their best, he also praised the effort and application of his young players on the big stage. 'Reaching seven semi-finals in a row is a real credit to everyone at the club that have put in a lot of work over a number of years,' Edwards told the official Chelsea website. 'I've said before that it's an effort from a lot of players and staff over that time so it really is a great achievement for the Academy as a whole. 'For us this year, we try to put all that to one side; we have enough to focus on trying to get to another final this year but that pressure is always there and it's interesting to see how the boys cope with that. 'I felt we controlled the game, as we knew we might because Reading are a counter-attacking team. We had a lot of possession but often you need to stay focused and disciplined because we know they don't concede many goals. There are a few players in the team who still look out-of-form with the ball but the pleasing thing was that we really matched Reading in terms of work-rate, competitiveness and competing for the second balls.' The introduction of Under-16 defender Dujon Sterling (pictured left) was an inspired one as the schoolboy played a part in both Blues goals and won our second penalty kick late on. While Edwards admitted the change was forced upon him due to injury to Charlie Wakefield, he also praised the impact the youngster made on proceedings. 'It was great for Dujon to come on and take his opportunity in the way he did,' continued Edwards. 'For a schoolboy to come on in his first game at Stamford Bridge and make an impact like that is brilliant.' Dasilva bagged his second goal in four days with our second-half opener, closely following his goal against Valencia in the UEFA Youth League earlier in the week. Edwards claimed it was an attribute the wing-back continues to develop. 'The system we have used in the Youth Cup this season has asked more of Jay from an attacking point of view so it's great to see him chipping with goals and assists. It was also good for Tammy to get back on the scoresheet because he's maybe been lacking a bit of confidence in front of goal recently. Obviously now we just need to get back to the drawing board with the penalties because we made it more difficult than it needed to be by missing two. 'I think it summed up our approach at the end to see the amount of chances we were creating. Usually teams will end up camped in their own penalty area hanging on when the score is 2-1 late on but we continued to defend high and aggressively. Jacob Maddox and Ruben Sammut had late opportunities but unfortunately we just couldn't convert them and that made the game more nervy than it needed to be.' The young Blues will now face Blackburn Rovers in a two-legged semi-final, with the first leg set to take place at Ewood Park and the second leg back at the Bridge. Before then, our Under-21s take on Southampton at St Mary's in the Under-21 Premier League on Monday 29 February. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and the game is being screened live on Chelsea TV.
