https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2016/03/05/ under-18s-report--manchester-city-v-chelsea Under-18s report: Manchester City 4 Chelsea 3 05 Mar 2016 Chelsea Under-18s kicked off their campaign in the Under-18 Premier League elite play-off round with a narrow defeat on the road in Manchester. An entertaining contest at City's Academy Stadium saw Chelsea strike first as Dujon Sterling put us in front after just two minutes, though City quickly levelled through Lukas Nmecha. Goals from Ike Ugbo and Ruben Sammut put us 3-1 ahead at the break but a brace from the bright Brahim Diaz and a penalty from Nmecha turned the game on its head. There were five changes from the side that beat Arsenal in our last league encounter three weeks previously, with Nathan Baxter, Joseph Colley, Josh Grant, Mason Mount and Charlie Wakefield returning to the team. Colley and captain Grant joined Ali Suljic and Under-16 Sterling in a back four protecting Baxter in goal, while Mount lined up in central midfield alongside Sammut. Ugbo, with 17 goals in 20 appearances this term, continued to lead the line up front supported by Miro Muheim, Isaac Christie-Davies and Wakefield. In a meeting of the respective winners in the Under-18 Premier League North and South sections, and a repeat of last campaign's FA Youth Cup final, it was a lively start at City's Academy Stadium. The visitors struck first with just two minutes on the clock as Sterling exchanged a neat one-two with Mount and then wrong-footed centre-back Jacob Davenport before firing beyond keeper Daniel Grimshaw with a left-foot strike. The lead lasted less than seven minutes as City quickly restored parity in the game. Aaron Nemane sped away from Suljic down the right channel and cut the ball back intelligently to find Nmecha in space, the striker holding his run and finishing confidently for his 13th league goal of the season. Christie-Davies saw a shot bravely blocked on the edge of the box as Joe Edwards's side rallied following a bright spell from the hosts. We were back in front just before the half-hour mark with a goal crafted down the left flank. Muheim did well to advance beyond the full-back before rolling the ball into Ugbo, who tucked a side-footed finish into the back of the net for his 16th league goal of the season. Christie-Davies fired over after good work from Wakefield down the right, while Grimshaw collected comfortably from Muheim's inswinging free-kick as the young Blues remained on top. They were rewarded for their dominance with a third goal before the interval at the end of a crisp attacking move. Sammut won possession on halfway and initiated the attack, spraying the ball wide to the right to find Wakefield. The wideman skipped forward and rolled a low cross into Ugbo, who flicked the ball back brilliantly into the path of the supporting Sammut to roll it beyond Grimshaw for his first goal of the season. Charlie Oliver timed a perfect challenge to thwart Muheim as the visitors threatened to add a fourth before the break, yet it was City celebrating again after the interval as they halved the deficit within six minutes of the restart. Diaz found himself in space running at an exposed back four, beat three defenders and then found the bottom corner with a powerful low effort. Muheim saw a strike blocked but Jason Wilcox's side were enlivened by their early goal in the second period and began to threaten on a regular basis. They ought to have levelled with 20 minutes remaining as Baxter clawed away Demeaco Duhaney's dangerous cross. Sammut made a crucial, brace tackle in the box but the ball fell invitingly for Erik Sarmiento, who lashed his effort wide. Yet it was 3-3 moments later as the referee awarded the hosts a penalty kick. It looked harsh on Sammut, who appeared to get the faintest of touches to the ball as Diaz advanced, though Nmecha was not prepared to let the visitors off the hook as he sent Baxter the wrong way from 12 yards out. City sensed they could steal the victory and their comeback was complete with seven minutes remaining. Diaz shot into the side netting and substitute Tom Dele-Bashiru fired over before the hosts struck to claim maximum league points. Substitute Cole Dasilva failed to clear a cross from the right and Diaz latched on to the loose ball, placing his finish into the bottom corner beyond the dive of Baxter. Ugbo, involved infrequently in the second half, was handed a great chance to snatch a point for his side late on as he escaped in behind the back four, though Grimshaw stood tall and made the stop. Mount then fashioned another wonderful chance for Suljic as his inswinging free-kick came all the way through to the back post, yet the Swede could not make sufficient contact to trouble the goalkeeper as City held on for the points. The next Academy action sees our Under-21s travel to the Madejski Stadium to take on Reading this Monday 7 March. Our youth team resume their play-off campaign next Saturday 12 March with a home game against Everton, to be screened live on Chelsea TV. Meanwhile, there has been a change to the kick-off time for our FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Originally scheduled for a 7pm start, kick-off is now 7.45pm. The game will also be screened live on Chelsea TV.
