Under-21s report: Manchester United 1 Chelsea 1
Mon 4 Apr 2016
Chelsea Under-21s earned a creditable point on the road at Old Trafford
this evening (Monday).
Kasey Palmer's 14th goal of the season handed the visitors a half-time
advantage but Manchester United skipper James Weir levelled 16 minutes
into the second period. The result extends our unbeaten league run to
eight games stretching back to November.
Adi Viveash made four changes from the side that were 2-1 winners over
Leicester City over three weeks previously, with Mitchell Beeney, Fikayo
Tomori, Charlie Colkett and Tammy Abraham returning to the starting team.
Abraham, with 23 goals to his name already this season, led the line up
front supported by an attacking trio of Palmer, Josimar Quintero and Reece
Mitchell, the latter having netted the winner against the Foxes at
Aldershot.
Jake Clarke-Salter started in defence, two days after making his first
team debut in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa, and he was joined in the back
four by captain Fankaty Dabo, Ola Aina and Tomori as Viveash switched from
3-5-2 to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 shape. Beeney started in goal, while
Colkett partnered Mukhtar Ali in central midfield.
United included first team players Phil Jones, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson
and Ashley Young among their ranks from the start and Young forced Tomori
into some strong early defending as the defender stretched well to divert
the England international's low cross away from danger.
The Blues carved out their first opportunity from a Colkett inswinging
free-kick but Clarke-Salter headed low yet wide. However, after an even
opening albeit with little work for either goalkeeper, the visitors took
the lead with 17 minutes on the clock.
Palmer and Quintero combined neatly to earn a free-kick on the edge of the
box and Palmer stepped up to bend a brilliant strike beyond the dive of
keeper Sam Johnstone in front of the Stretford End.
The hosts responded as Guillermo Varela brought a routine stop from Beeney
with an effort that was struck into the ground and then Young fired
straight at Clarke-Salter after neat work down the left from captain James
Weir. Yet Viveash's side looked the more likely of the two sides to add
another goal as the half wore on.
Mitchell saw a deflected strike spin narrowly beyond the far post before
Abraham headed the resulting corner narrowly over, while the lively Palmer
saw another attempt at goal gathered by Johnstone as the Blues grew in
ascendancy. It was very nearly 2-0 moments before the interval as Aina's
dipping volley clipped the top of the United crossbar, with the visitors
retreating for the midway break much the happier of the two sides.
It was the first return to Old Trafford for our youngsters since a 2-1 win
in May 2014 in front of 13,000 supporters secured the Under-21 league
title. A similarly impressive near-10,000 crowd turned up for this latest
instalment but the hosts continued to struggle to break down their
counterparts from west London after the break.
Andreas Pereira spun dangerously into space but squandered the sight at
goal by blazing over. Still opportunities came for Chelsea but they failed
to convert them as Mitchell's cross-shot evaded the supporting attackers
in the box and then Clarke-Salter lashed over following Colkett's corner.
Parity was restored shortly after the hour mark. Donald Love had gone
close a minute previously with a dipping effort that dropped just too late
yet the home crowd were celebrating seconds later as Weir was able to turn
in the box and fired into the bottom corner, with a deflection also
helping to beat Beeney.
The 20-year-old almost had a second shortly after, with Beeney reacting
instinctively to grasp his close-range header from a right-sided corner as
United enjoyed their brightest spell of the match. Viveash responded with
a change in personnel, 16-year-old centre-back Joseph Colley replacing
Quintero, with Dabo moving forward.
The full-back's more advanced role almost paid immediate dividends as he
led a quick counter-attack with Palmer. The latter found Abraham's run
with a forward pass but the striker's effort was a foot too high from a
narrow angle.
Beeney made a smart stop to deny Pereira and Johnstone grasped well down
the other end as substitute Islam Feruz threatened. Yet with legs tiring
on both sides late on, the points were shared, leaving the Blues fifth in
the league table.
Academy football moves to Stamford Bridge at the end of this week when our
youth team contest the second leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final. Joe
Edwards's side hold a slender advantage from the first game at Ewood Park,
when Tomori's goal handed us a 1-0 win. Supporters wishing to attend can
purchase tickets online now priced at £5 for adults and £3 for
concessions.

After the game, Viveash reflected on a difficult game and a challenging
test for his players. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he said:
'It was a very tough game in which our work-rate was exceptional and we
defended pretty well for the majority of the game.
'We lose personnel before the game so we went with three number 10
midfield players and there were certain aspects of that which worked and
certain aspects that we found difficult. United have two very attacking
full-backs so they got at us down the sides at times but we defended balls
into the box really well.
'I was a bit disappointed with our use of the ball overall, it wasn't at
our highest level but then when you're not at your best in that sense then
you have to show enough to scrape something out of the game. These are the
type of games we're developing these players to be involved in every week
because whatever league you play in, that's the type of game you often
face away from home.
'We showed a lot of character and it was a good achievement to get a
result like that at Old Trafford. It keeps our unbeaten run going and puts
us in good stead moving forward.'
