Under-18s report: Fulham 0 Chelsea 2
news Sat 9 Apr 2016
Four schoolboys featured as our youth team ran out 2-0 winners at Fulham
this morning (Saturday) to keep their hopes of winning the Under-18
Premier League alive.
The morning after securing a place in a fifth successive FA Youth Cup
final with victory over Blackburn Rovers at Stamford Bridge, Joe Edwards
and his players made the short trip to Motspur Park. Second half goals
from Charlie Wakefield and Ike Ugbo settled the west London derby and
placed the young Blues four points clear at the top of the play-off elite
tier, albeit the chasing pack hold games in hand.
Wakefield and Isaac Christie-Davies were the only two who featured at the
Bridge to start against Fulham, with the latter partnering captain Luke
McCormick in central midfield. Wakefield operated on the right flank, with
Miro Muheim on the opposite wing and Kyle Scott starting in the number 10
position.
Jared Thompson made his return from injury to start in goal protected by a
back four containing two Under-16s as Reece James and Marc Guehi were
joined by first-year scholars Richard Nartey and Cole Dasilva. Ugbo led
the line up front, eager for more goals as he looks to be crowned the
league's top goalscorer this term.
The first half was a largely uneventful affair but the hosts enjoyed the
better of the opening exchanges. Thompson saved from Luca De La Torre and
Mikolaj Kwietniewski fired wide before Edwards's side grew into the game
and threatened through Ugbo and then Wakefield.
Dennis Adeniran's free-kick was too high to trouble Thompson before both
Ugbo and Christie-Davies saw promising efforts narrowly miss the target
down the other end. Adeniran forced a routine stop from Thompson as the
interval came with both sides still searching for the opener.
After snatching a late draw at Motspur Park earlier in the season back in
the regional programme, the visitors had belief that they could secure all
three points with an improved display after the break. Scott shot over the
crossbar from distance and Ugbo prodded wide following a teasing cross
from the left byline by Dasilva as Edwards's side came out for the second
period with renewed vigour.
They broke the deadlock within 10 minutes of the restart. Christie-Davies
spread the play wide to Wakefield and the winger cut inside from the
flank, skipping past a defender before arrowing a bending effort beyond
goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond and into the far corner.
Fulham responded and Thompson clawed away a dangerous corner from the
right before Ugbo doubled our advantage on the hour mark with his 20th
league goal of the season. Picking the ball up 30 yards from goal, the
striker turned and advanced before drilling a low effort past the helpless
goalkeeper.
It was a scoreline cushion that ensured the youngsters played the final
half hour with confidence and also allowed Edwards to introduce schoolboys
Tariq Uwakwe and George McEachran from the bench. The former helped Ugbo
tee up a chance for McCormick to fire just wide and then threatened
himself with an effort that Ashby-Hammond punched behind.
Substitute Stephen Humphrys brought a pair of smart saves from Thompson
late on as the home side rallied briefly but, just like in west London the
previous evening, the young Blues had done their work and held firm to
secure a ninth league clean sheet of the campaign and back-to-back elite
round wins.
Academy action continues apace next week with our Under-21s travelling to
take on Everton on Monday 11 April, before our Under-19s travel to Nyon,
Switzerland to defend their UEFA Youth League crown. Their semi-final
against Anderlecht takes place on Friday 15 April, with a potential final
set for Monday 18 April.
