Youth Cup final reaction: Another outstanding achievement
Thu 28 Apr 2016
Having overseen Chelsea's third FA Youth Cup triumph in as many years,
Under-18s manager Joe Edwards explained just why the latest success felt
so good.
Edwards' personal accomplishment in this prestigious competition started
in 2012 when he was assistant to Adi Viveash. From the same position he
helped the class of 2014 to glory and since taking charge, after Viveash
moved to manage the Under-21s, Edwards now has successive Youth Cup
victories to his name. It is a remarkable achievement and, as he was keen
to stress at Stamford Bridge last night, testament to the great work done
by everyone in our Academy.
'It gets sweeter every time,' Edwards beamed. 'It certainly feels very
special.
'The staff and the players have been a tight-knit group for a number of
years. Some of us started working together nine or 10 years ago. Certainly
in the last couple of years we have been a tight-knit team, and a team
full of home-grown Chelsea boys, not just home-grown in terms of English
but home-grown Chelsea boys.
'And it gets harder every year we've won it. The pressure does increase a
little bit. We try to put it to the back of our minds but you're a target
for all the other teams, so to achieve what we have against Man City, the
other top academy, is an outstanding achievement.'
Edwards took extra satisfaction from the manner in which we sealed our
latest triumph. At 1-1 after the first leg in Manchester, the tie was
delicately poised but after scoring on the cusp of half-time Edwards's
youngsters took control after the break and thoroughly deserved their
eventual 4-2 aggregate win.
'Not only did we do it but we did it in style. The first half was tense
and tight like the first leg was, something you'd expect because it's two
top teams. It was tactical which perhaps didn't give the crowd as much to
go crazy about as you'd want, but we came on strong in the second half and
showed the experience that a lot of these boys have got. We put on a show
and won it in style.
'There was pressure. For a lot of them it was their last Under-18 game,
people like Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva trying to win it for a
third time. The first goal was big and it definitely changed what the
atmosphere could have been like in the dressing room. We went in there and
the leaders just took over and were settling people. It gave us the
perfect platform to come out for the second half, relax and just play.'
Edwards also put the victory in context, explaining what it means to his
players.
'We always look to the future and where they're going to go and what
they're going to achieve, but for starters some of them have given their
whole childhoods to this Academy, coming in day after day and working so
hard. First of all they'll have unbelievable memories, shared with their
best friends they have grown up with. You can never take that for granted.
'Secondly they're all aiming to get in the first team at a club like this
where the pressure to win is incredible. When they're on the Youth Cup
stage and there are TV cameras there and other media, that's pressure
young kids of their age aren't normally used to. To keep coming through it
hopefully holds them in good stead.'
Finally, Edwards hailed the work done behind the scenes at Cobham. It is
there that the foundations of the Academy's remarkable success in recent
years is laid.
'You can't give Neil Bath enough credit for the way the Academy is run. We
have been massive on culture for a number of years and the importance of
strong, good people, as well as just football players.
'A lot of people will say that, and you can put all the quotes you want on
your training ground walls, but the proof is in the pudding and our
players represent what goes on every day and the work the staff do with
them. The players have gone out and done us proud again and that is all
credit to the staff.'

FA Youth Cup reaction: Mad night, proud moment
Thu 28 Apr 2016
The official Chelsea website speaks to some of those involved in winning
the FA Youth Cup last night, including the captain, two of the goalscorers
and the man who has overseen their development at the club.
Jake Clarke-Salter was the skipper who lifted the trophy, and was joined
by Jay Dasilva in making Chelsea history by collecting a third winners'
medal for this competition.
'Obviously it is a massive achievement for the teams to get three in a
row, and also for me individually,' Clarke-Salter said. 'To join the five
names who have done it before is great. It feels quite surreal. Obviously
I want to win every game but this is extra special.'
He had words for his centre-back partner Fikayo Tomori who added his goal
in yesterday's final to the one he netted in the UEFA Youth League final
the previous week.
'He has an eye for goal at the moment and I am buzzing for him, to get
goals and play a massive part in our team is great for him.
'It has been an amazing month for me, making my first-team debut, winning
the UEFA Youth League and now the Youth Cup.'
Dasilva contrasted 2016 with his other two FA Youth Cup triumphs.
'This is definitely the best one, this tops it off, three in a row and
doing what players like Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards did, that is a
very special thing for me and I am very proud of that.
'Man City put us under pressure in the first half and they came out to win
but I think our quality proved too much for them. Dujon Sterling scoring
straight before half-time gave us a lot of confidence and the momentum to
see it through.'
'It's mad,' added the scorer of Chelsea's third goal, Fikayo Tomori.
'That was our goal at the beginning of the season, to retain the Youth
Cup. In the UEFA Youth League we just wanted to get as far as we could and
to win both is incredible.
'Last year I scored zero! To score in both finals is a big contrast and
I'm happy with my performances, but most of all I am happy we won. It's a
time to celebrate at the moment. There are few more Under-21s games left
so we want to get the most out of those but we are going to enjoy this for
sure.'
Tammy Abraham's seventh goal of the Youth Cup campaign made it 2-0 on the
night and went a long way towards sealing the tie.
'The lads are excited, I'm excited,' smiled the centre-forward. 'Two
trophies in two weeks is a great achievement for all of us. Winning a
trophy is a great feeling every time and to do it in my last year in the
Youth Cup is special.
'I don't even know what happened with the goal to be honest, I just
remember it hitting my head and the fans cheering. It's a great
achievement for me to score in my final game at this level.'
Head of youth development Neil Bath outlined what it has taken for the
Academy to achieve such an enduring level of achievement.
'We reorganised the Academy some 10 years ago and what it meant was a
group of dedicated staff first of all, that started with setting up a
strong scouting network and getting the right coaches on board.
'We knew we had to start by recruiting at a young age, and it would take
time. Six or seven years into that we started to win things and hence us
winning five Youth Cups in seven years. It has been many years of work and
it takes a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work from staff and from
the players themselves and the parents that support us.
'When you start winning a few trophies at those younger ages, you start to
create a culture – people talk about a winning mentality but we break
that down into behaviour and we have set of behaviours that are on and off
the field. This is a winning mentality – from blocking, chasing,
tackling, running to behaving appropriately on and off the pitch. That is
what we do, we drive one another.
'Every player in this team is qualified for England and not only that, the
majority of them are London boys who have been with us since the age of
between seven to 11. That shows it is very much a team effort.
'When you have success the older teams get the limelight but I am always
full of praise for everyone involved, and of course for Adi Viveash and
Andy Myers for winning two UEFA Youth Leagues on the trot and the same
with Joe Edwards with the support of Jody Morris. They deserve a big pat
on the back.
'I think the fans really enjoy these occasions. I am local lad, a
Battersea boy, and I know scores of people who were coming to this final
to give the lads their full support and I know they find the games
interesting and exciting. I am extremely proud of everyone involved.'
