Development squad report: Chelsea 4 Liverpool 1
Mon 22 Aug 2016
Our development squad produced an emphatic performance to beat Liverpool
at Aldershot this evening (Monday).
A stalemate at the interval, the game sparked into life after the break as
goals from Josimar Quintero, Mason Mount, Dujon Sterling and Ike Ugbo
handed Adi Viveash's side all three points. Harry Wilson had briefly
equalised for the visitors but they were blown away during a 10-minute
attacking salvo in which Mount also missed a penalty.
Viveash made three changes from the starting side that opened the
inaugural Premier League 2 campaign with a 1-1 draw at Sunderland eight
days previously. Bradley Collins returned from injury to replace Nathan
Baxter in goal, while Fikayo Tomori joined a back three alongside Joseph
Colley and Trevoh Chalobah.
Isaac Christie-Davies made his first appearance of the season in an
attacking midfield role supporting lone striker Ugbo. Jay Dasilva and
Sterling operated at left wing-back and right wing-back respectively,
while Quintero, Kyle Scott and Mount lined up in midfield. Despite the age
eligibility rules in the league increasing to Under-23 this year, the
average age of the home team's starting line-up was just over
17-and-a-half.
Their youthfulness did not show during a dominant opening period from the
hosts. Dasilva (pictured below) and Mount saw early shots blocked well
before the latter teed up Quintero to aim straight at goalkeeper Kamil
Grabara with his shot.
The hosts were getting some joy from pressing high and hassling Liverpool
when the visitors were in possession and attempting to play out from the
back. Dasilva forced a routine save with an effort on his weaker right
foot after a flowing Blues move down the right before Mount's low
free-kick was deflected away from danger by a well-placed defensive wall.
Mount remained the chief creator for Viveash's side and came closest to
breaking the deadlock following Dasilva's progress down the left flank.
The 17-year-old looked destined to poke the ball into the bottom corner
but, leaning slightly off-balance, could only drag his strike wide of the
far post.
The game continued with the same theme for the opening 15 minutes of the
second period, with Christie-Davies warming the palms of Grabara and Ugbo
unable to stretch high enough to threaten in the air from Dasilva's
teasing cross. As the hour mark approached, a subdued evening in Aldershot
sparked into life with four goals and a missed penalty within 11 minutes.
Chelsea were rewarded for a dogged attacking display with the opener as
Sterling escaped into space down the right. The 16-year-old cut his cross
back invitingly into the path of Quintero and the Ecuadorian steered it
beyond Grabara to give the hosts a deserved lead.
They were pegged back almost instantly. The Reds raced down the other end
from kick-off and Wilson found the top corner from 20 yards, leaving
Collins with no chance. It was just the response the visitors were looking
for but the scores were not level for long.
Quintero was involved once again, picking up a pass from Ugbo and firing
at goal. His shot was destined to fly harmlessly wide but Mount flung out
a leg and diverted it into the back of the net, with the goalkeeper
stranded.
Mount had an opportunity to add to the tally moments later. A neat move
between Scott and Ugbo saw the striker caught in the box by a trailing
leg. The referee pointed to the spot but Mount was thwarted by an
excellent diving save to the right from Grabara.
However, a two-goal advantage was secured after 72 minutes and it was
fashioned through sheer determination as Sterling chased down a blocked
clearance that appeared to be a lost cause. The young defender was on hand
to punish the goalkeeper's fumble and poke the loose ball into the net.
Collins denied Wilson as he tipped the forward's free-kick over the
crossbar while Mount's mazy run was only denied by a smart save behind.
There was just time remaining for Ugbo to put a gloss on the scoreline,
latching on to substitute Charlie Wakefield's cross to fire in on the spin
from close range.
The emphatic final score was just reward for a brilliant performance from
the youngsters, who have a win and a draw from their opening two matches
in Premier League 2. They return to action next weekend with a trip to
Manchester United on Sunday 28 August. Kick-off is at 1.05pm, live on
Chelsea TV.

PL2 reaction: Proud performance
Tue 23 Aug 2016
Our development squad were worthy winners against Liverpool last night in
their second game of the rebranded Premier League 2 campaign.
Josimar Quintero's strike put the Blues 1-0 up and, although Harry Wilson
levelled within a minute, we roared back with goals from Mason Mount,
Dujon Sterling and Ike Ugbo to triumph 4-1 and pick up the first-three
point haul of the season.
After the game, manager Adi Viveash reflected on a pleasing evening's work
for his young side. Despite the age eligibility in the league increasing
to Under-23 this term, the average age of our starting side was just over
17-and-a-half, with five players still eligible for our FA Youth Cup team
this season.
'It's a massively positive result for the group,' Viveash told the
official Chelsea website. 'It was a very good performance and I'm very
proud to see football played like that all through the game. The speed of
our passing was a lot quicker than at Sunderland and our response at 1-1
was excellent.
'We're not going to win every game of football but these players are used
to winning and that's a nice habit to have. It was great to see them
really drive the game in the second half. They weren't settling for a
draw.'
After opting for a 4-2-3-1 system away at Sunderland the previous weekend,
a game in which the Blues came from behind to draw 1-1, the manager
utilised the versatility of his group to start with 3-4-2-1 against the
Reds. It is a shape they used against both RC Lens and Charlton in
pre-season.
'We played with four different systems in pre-season and it's great to
have that adaptability. I'm sure we will use a couple more systems
throughout the year because we have to suit the players we have available
and the team we want to go with.
'Liverpool sat back and tried to hit us on this counter-attack which was a
bit of a surprise. They made several great blocks in the first half but
we've been working all week on creating chances and getting our shots in
at goal. We could have doubled the scoreline and that wouldn't have
flattered us because it was a very dominant display.'
The goals rained down during a blistering 10-minute spell in the second
half, in which Mount was also denied from the penalty spot. All four of
the scorers were left celebrating their maiden goals for this age group.
'I'm pleased for all the scorers but particularly Ike because there is
pressure when you're the number nine in this team,' Viveash said. 'He
scored a great goal and could have had a hat-trick but it was a good night
for us all-round.
'The challenge now is to see if we can produce that sort of performance
again. I've said to the players as long as they give their all in every
game and work to what we want to achieve in the game then I'll be happy.
'You have to enjoy performances when you play as well as that at this age.
We have got so many talented players, most of them English, so it's an
exciting group to work with. It was a very pleasing night but most of all
it's nice to see the week's work coming out in the game. When the players
can see the fruits of their work come out in the game at the end of the
week, it means they have more buy-in to the work that we're doing.'
The development squad return to action in Premier League 2 on Sunday 28
August with a trip to Manchester United. Chelsea TV will be screening the
action as part of a double-bill of live football on Bank Holiday Sunday.
Kick-off in Manchester is at 1.05pm and is then followed by the Chelsea
Ladies, who resume their WSL campaign with a trip to Birmingham City,
kick-off 3.15pm.
