08/28 20:40

08/28 20:45,

https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/08/ pl2-report--man-united-v-chelsea.html PL2 report: Man United 1 Chelsea 1 Sun 28 Aug 2016 Our development squad claimed a creditable point at the home of the champions as they continued their unbeaten start to the season in Premier League 2. The youngsters were the better team in a largely even contest at Leigh Sports Village and Kyle Scott's goal in first-half stoppage time looked to have earned Adi Viveash's side all three points. However, a late own goal from Joseph Colley ensured a share of the spoils. Viveash made two changes from the side that beat Liverpool at the start of the week with Charlie Colkett and Dominic Solanke coming into the team, the latter making his first appearance at this level in over a year after a season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem. The 3-4-2-1 shape was retained as Mason Mount and Josimar Quintero supported Solanke in attack, while Dujon Sterling and Jay Dasilva provided the width at wing-back. Bradley Collins continued in goal protected by Fikayo Tomori, Trevoh Chalobah and Joseph Colley in defence. Colkett partnered Scott in central midfield. An even contest ensued in the north-west as Josh Harrop provided the first test for the visiting defence, forcing Colley into a smart block following neat interplay between Matthew Willock and Demetri Mitchell. Solanke looked sharp and almost nicked the loose ball past goalkeeper Sam Johnstone before Quintero saw a dangerous shot cleared. Mount netted his maiden goal at this level in the victory over Liverpool and he went closest for the visitors in the opening period. A nice passage of play saw the midfielder receive Dasilva's sweeping pass and his dangerous first-time cross was headed behind. The following corner was a quick-thinking routine and teed up a sight at goal for Mount, who dragged his effort wide. Solanke was forced to withdraw from the action after 30 minutes following a late challenge from Scott McTominay on halfway that could have warranted more than the yellow card brandished by the referee. Ike Ugbo replaced him up front and the hosts grew into the ascendancy for the final quarter of an hour before the break. Scott fired narrowly wide and Chalobah's header from Colkett's corner was plucked out of the air by Johnstone before the home stopper was beaten. Quintero latched on to a poor clearance and instinctively fired at goal, beating Johnstone but not the covering Axel Tuanzebe, who blocked the effort on the line. The breakthrough came in stoppage time and it deservedly went to the visitors as Dasilva's cross from the left troubled Johnstone, challenged in the air by Sterling. The ball fell kindly for Scott to tap in to the empty net from five yards out. The hosts needed a response after the break, having failed to trouble Collins in the first half, but the game restarted in scrappy fashion from both sides. It took almost 20 minutes for the visiting stopper to be tested, comfortably gathering Mitchell's drive before being called into more demanding work moments later as he flung himself across goal to tip Harrop's strike over the bar. It started a testing period for the Blues rearguard, with last-ditch blocks required to thwart Harrop and then Willock. Viveash responded by introducing Isaac Christie-Davies, demanding more control in midfield and a return to the intensity of the first half. The change settled the play but was not enough to secure maximum points for the visitors as United stole a point with a late leveller. Regan Poole's teasing delivery from the right gave a headache to those defending the 18-yard box and Colley's attempted clearance flew past Collins and into the back of the net before the keeper could move. It was perhaps harsh on our young side, who had looked so in control for long periods, although five points from an opening three games that has taken in trips to last year's league winners and runners-up represents a strong start to the season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/08/ pl2-reaction--optimistic-opening.html PL2 reaction: Optimistic opening Mon 29 Aug 2016 Our development squad head into the international break unbeaten from their opening three games in the inaugural Premier League 2 following a 1-1 draw away at Manchester United, the league champions in each of the past two seasons. Kyle Scott's goal in first-half stoppage time looked to have secured maximum points for Adi Viveash's side but a late own-goal meant a share of the spoils in the North-West. With many of his players now heading away on international duty, Viveash reflected after the game on a very encouraging opening to the new season which has seen his team claim a win and two draws. 'We don't want to talk purely about results but it's a fantastic achievement for the lads to have started unbeaten after away games against the first and second-place teams from last season,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'It was another positive, enjoyable afternoon against a top team. It's always such a tough game and we gave away probably 18 months in age in some areas of the pitch. We started a bit slowly but then we got on top and had a really good spell in which we dominated, played some great football and switched the ball well, which we had talked about. 'We deserved the goal right at the end of the first half and it was a lovely move. It was good for Kyle to be in the box and very brave of Dujon Sterling to challenge with the keeper again. We were pleased at half-time but we've been in this scenario in the last few years, 1-0 up here at half-time, so we knew what was coming.' The hosts responded as they looked for an equaliser after the break but didn't manage to level the scores until five minutes from time when Joseph Colley sliced a dangerous delivery into his own net. 'We just switched off and lost our shape for the goal,' Viveash said. 'It's a fantastic ball in; as a defender you have to try to defend it but Joseph couldn't quite get his body angle round and the ball has flown past Brad Collins like a bullet into the corner. 'The players put another big shift in and I can't fault them for work-rate, determination and sticking together. We've had a real introduction to this level now in these first three games. We're not going to be as good as we were against Liverpool every week but in between that we have to learn and find out different things about ourselves. 'Like today, United pressed us three-on-three when we played out from the goalkeeper. We were expecting that so we looked at it but it's up to the players to find the solutions. We struggled a bit with that in the first half but they worked through it as the game went on and that's a huge part of development football.' The young Blues return to action next month with a Stamford Bridge meeting against Tottenham in Premier League 2 on Friday 9 September.
