Our youth team were beaten following an end-to-end encounter in rainy
Norfolk this morning (Saturday).
A brace from Martell Taylor-Crossdale and an own goal handed Jody Morris's
side a 3-1 advantage at the break. However, a fightback from the Canaries
after the break inflicted defeat on the visitors, despite a late goal
scored by substitute Charlie Brown.
Taylor-Crossdale led the line for the Blues supported by an attacking trio
of Harvey St Clair, George McEachran and schoolboy Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Jared Thompson started in goal protected by a back four of captain Cole
Dasilva, Richard Nartey, Marc Guehi and Reece James. Luke McCormick
partnered Conor Gallagher in central midfield.
The young Blues started brightly with St Clair firing narrowly wide before
they went ahead after 13 minutes. Taylor-Crossdale lingered dangerously on
the shoulder of the last defender and his run was married with a super
pass from Gallagher, from which he rounded the goalkeeper and steered the
ball into the back of the net.
The scores were level within three minutes as the hosts responded
instantly. Louis McIntosh escaped in behind Dasilva and managed to beat
Thompson with a low effort, despite the goalkeeper getting a foot to the
ball.
St Clair fired a free-kick just wide after Hudson-Odoi was fouled
following enterprising play coming in from the right flank before the
Blues struck back ahead. Winger St Clair this time turned provider and
delivered a teasing delivery that Timi Odusina could only slice wildly
past his own goalkeeper.
Yet Morris's men were never really in control and Norwich continued to
threaten as Kieran Higgs and then McIntosh fired warning shots at
Thompson's goal.
Taylor-Crossdale ensured a two-goal cushion at the interval as he
continued his prolific goalscoring start to the season, sliding the ball
in from close range at the end of a lovely move involving James and
St Clair.
Norwich restarted after the break with a spring in their step and managed
to level the scores within 10 minutes. Max Aarons halved the deficit with
a low finish into the bottom corner after beating two defenders on a mazy
run before skipper Owen Wallis fired in the equaliser on the spin after
the Blues failed to clear a right-sided corner.
The visitors sent on Tariq Uwakwe to provide some steel in midfield but
the 16-year-old could not stop the flow of Norwich advances. Another
quickfire double turned the game on its head. McIntosh picked up a pass
from Devonte Aransibia and fired past Thompson before Alan Fleming added a
fifth four minutes later.
Hudson-Odoi remained lively and blasted over the bar as the youngsters,
now trailing 5-3, tried to fight back into the contest. Taylor-Crossdale
headed over, Guehi's shot was blocked after a goal-mouth scramble and then
substitute Brown pulled one back late on but it was not enough for
Morris's side to claim a point on their travels.
