https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/09/ checkatrade-trophy-report--swindon-v-chelsea.html Checkatrade Trophy report: Swindon 2 Chelsea 1 Tue 13 Sep 2016 Our development squad made their debut in the Checkatrade Trophy this evening (Tuesday), where they went down to a narrow defeat away at Swindon Town. After accepting an invitation for our development squad to compete in the revamped competition, formerly the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Adi Viveash took his side to the County Ground to face the League One club's senior side. Goals in either half handed the hosts victory but it was a more than creditable performance from a visiting team in which each player was making his first start in a senior competition. Mukhtar Ali halved Swindon's lead late on after coming off the bench to rifle a finish into the top corner. The Blues lined up with a team of teenagers as seven ever-presents from Viveash's Premier League 2 side started in Wiltshire. Defenders Jay Dasilva and Trevoh Chalobah joined Dujon Sterling and Fikayo Tomori in a back four protecting Bradley Collins in goal. Kyle Scott and Josimar Quintero kept their places in central midfield, while Ike Ugbo lead the line in attack supported by Isaac Christie-Davies, Mason Mount and Charlie Wakefield. The Robins made six changes from their weekend League One defeat at local rivals Oxford United. It was a confident start from the visitors, passing the ball about freely and settling in to their first taste of senior competitive football. Wakefield almost capitalised on a loose pass out from goalkeeper Will Henry before Quintero and then Chalobah were forced into some strong defending as Swindon grew stronger and threatened. Sterling was forced to clear to safety after Chalobah thwarted Jermaine Hylton with a well-timed challenge before the hosts took the lead after 18 minutes. Sean Murray provided the delivery from the corner and Raphael Rossi Branco looped a header over Collins into the back of the net. Before the game, Viveash had identified the mental strength of his players as key to success and their response to falling behind was positive. Mount almost levelled the scores instantly with a curling strike from 20 yards that struck the underside of the bar before bouncing away to safety. Wakefield then tested Henry after accelerating down the right, while Christie-Davies and Mount fired efforts off-target after good play both with and without the ball from the Blues. However, Swindon remained a threat going forward and came close to doubling their advantage as Hylton beat Tomori and then squared the ball for Luke Norris. The striker looked like he would net but for the intervention of 16-year-old Sterling, who managed to hook the ball clear. Christie-Davies brought a routine stop from Henry and Wakefield blasted inches over following a short corner routine as the Blues ended the half brightly. Henry punched clear a dangerous delivery from Wakefield after the restart before Collins was forced into his first save of note, tipping over a rasping drive from substitute Nathan Delfouneso. The visiting keeper was beaten by Delfouneso moments later as Swindon doubled their lead with 61 minutes on the clock. It was another set-piece that caught out Viveash's side as the forward's inswinging delivery evaded everyone and bounced in off the far post. Still the Blues did not lose confidence and they continued to create opportunities. Mount was denied by the goalkeeper after lovely footwork helped him tee up a sight at goal before Ali found the top corner with a spectacular finish from 25 yards. It was ultimately not enough for Viveash's side to claim a point on their first appearance in the competition but there were plenty of positives for a young side that finished the game with two 16-year-olds and three 17-year-olds on the field. The development squad return to action next Monday 19 September with a trip to the Madesjki Stadium to take on Reading in Premier League 2. Before then, our youth team host Arsenal in the Under-18 Premier League on Saturday morning, live on Chelsea TV. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/09/ checkatrade-trophy-reaction--proud-night.html Checkatrade Trophy reaction: Proud night Wed 14 Sep 2016 Our development squad were narrowly beaten on their Checkatrade Trophy debut last night (Tuesday) as they went down 2-1 away at Swindon Town. After the club accepted an invitation for our development squad to compete in the reshaped competition, formerly the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, Adi Viveash took his side to the County Ground to face the League One club's senior side. Early goals in each half gave the Robins a two-goal lead but the Blues finished strongly as they pulled one back through Mukhtar Ali. After the game, Viveash reflected on the learning experiences for his young side. All of his players were making their first competitive start in a senior competition, with the starting team comprised entirely of teenagers. 'It's a night we're going to learn a lot from and that's the main thing for us,' Viveash told the official Chelsea website. 'We're disappointed to lose to two set-piece goals. Our technical level was not our usual level in the first half and we gave the ball away when we weren't really under pressure but I suspect that has something to do with the nerves of such an occasion. 'We pressed Swindon very well and nicked the ball back in good areas, created more clear-cut chances and forced their keeper into three very good saves, as well as hitting the crossbar. I was very pleased with our performance in the second half because I felt we raised the level, caused them major problems and deserved our goal.' The manager also reserved special praise for the youngest of his starters, 16-year-old defender Dujon Sterling. 'I don't like singling out individuals but I will on this occasion because Dujon was outstanding against league opposition. He was physically strong, good on the ball and defended brilliantly so a special night for a young kid. 'We worked tremendously hard off the ball so I'm slightly disappointed for the players. If we had reached our level a bit quicker in the first half, and but for some great defending and good goalkeeping, it could have been a different.' Viveash felt his side could have snatched a draw in a strong finish but is proud of his youngsters regardless of the result. 'The testimony for our performance is that Swindon have finished the game with a back six and their bench were calling for time at the end. They were hanging on and another five minutes could have been very interesting. 'We're rightly proud of our boys and they got a great reception from the group of Chelsea supporters at the end. The fact they were also applauded off by the Swindon fans tells you a lot about what they produced.'
