https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/09/ under-18s-report--chelsea-v-arsenal.html Under-18s report: Chelsea 4 Arsenal 2 Sat 17 Sep 2016 Our youth team returned to winning ways as they claimed a convincing derby victory over Arsenal at Cobham this morning (Saturday). Jody Morris's youngsters were deserved winners against the league leaders as a hat-trick from Martell Taylor-Crossdale and a strike from Harvey St Clair sealed the win. Despite late goals in each half from the visitors, the Blues were in front in the game from the second minute and made it three home wins from three this season. Morris made four changes from last weekend's away defeat at Norwich City, with goalkeeper Marcin Bulka coming into the team for his Chelsea debut following a summer switch from Poland. Joseph Colley and captain Josh Grant returned to the back line alongside Reece James and Marc Guehi. After a prolific goalscoring start to the season, Taylor-Crossdale led the line up front supported by St Clair, George McEachran and schoolboy Callum Hudson-Odoi. Luke McCormick partnered Jacob Maddox in central midfield. Arsenal came into the London derby top of the southern league table, their early season form aided by three clean sheets in their opening four games. However, they were cut apart after a blistering start from Morris's boys and 2-0 down after just five minutes. Taylor-Crossdale had netted in each of his three youth team appearances this campaign, including doubles in the last two, and the 16-year-old striker was not about to let that record slip. He opened the scoring inside two minutes, pouncing on a mistake at the back from the visitors before rounding goalkeeper Joao Virginia and slotting into the empty net. The Blues doubled their advantage moments later. Maddox burst in between two defenders from midfield and was upended as he surged into the 18-yard box. The referee pointed to the spot and Taylor-Crossdale made no mistake with the spot-kick. With confidence high, the hosts continued to create opportunities. Virginia made a decent save to deny the overlapping Grant down the left before gathering comfortably as our other full-back, Reece James, shot at goal from distance. St Clair came within a whisker of poking Hudson-Odoi's dangerous cross in for our third but it was the Gunners who ended the half in the ascendancy as they halved the deficit. Joe Willock advanced dangerously down the left and his teasing cross was turned in at the back post by Jordi Osei-Tutu, the right-back. Eddie Nketiah then went close to equalising with chances either side of the interval, with Bulka keeping out his low strike and then watching a fierce drive fly narrowly wide. The hosts made it 3-1 six minutes after the restart as they re-established a two-goal lead. St Clair was the scorer but McEachran was the architect, dancing beyond three defenders with dazzlingly quick footwork before teeing up St Clair to lash in from close range for his fourth goal of the season. James provided excellent cover to block Nketiah's attempt after the forward rounded Bulka but the Blues were in control of proceedings as the half progressed. The points were sealed with 18 minutes remaining as Taylor-Crossdale celebrated his hat-trick. It was the striker's rising strike that smacked the post and, in the ensuing aftermath, St Clair was tripped in the box. Taylor-Crossdale steered the penalty into the bottom corner for his eighth goal in just four youth team appearances this term. Arsenal pulled a goal back late on as substitute Josh Benson beat Bulka following some neat play but it was not enough to threaten a comeback as Morris's men continued their long unbeaten home league record, which now stands at 21 games. The youngsters return to action in the Under-18 Premier League next weekend with a trip to Aston Villa. Before then, our development squad have two Premier League 2 games in five days next week, starting with a trip to the Madejski Stadium to take on Reading this Monday 19 September. That is followed by a Stamford Bridge derby against Arsenal on Friday evening. Tickets are currently on general sale priced at just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/09/ under-18s-reaction--right-response.html Under-18s reaction: Right response Sun 18 Sep 2016 Our youngsters returned to winning ways in the Under-18 Premier League with an impressive home victory over Arsenal this weekend. Martell Taylor-Crossdale bagged a hat-trick to continue his prolific goalscoring start to the season, while Harvey St Clair also chipped in with another goal on the way to a 4-2 win at Cobham. After the game, a result that sees the youth team rise to fourth in the southern table, manager Jody Morris reflected on bouncing back from a disappointing defeat last time out away at Norwich. 'You want a game to come round as quickly as possible after a performance like last week and the fact it was against Arsenal added an extra little bit of spice,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'They are top of the league and have started the season well but we weren't too despondent coming into the game. We addressed some of the things that went wrong at Norwich but we also reflected on the fact we've lost two games that we should have won. 'The lads started really well and the really pleasing thing for me was the way they followed the game plan off the ball. I felt we were hard to beat and won plenty of balls high up when we pressed them. We looked at some slightly different ways to attack them, hitting the frontman from our goal-kicks to see if we could use Martell's physicality and managed to score from that so those things were pleasing.' Morris admitted he was disappointed with conceding another two soft goals but felt happy overall with the performance and result achieved by his young charges. 'We've conceded another two poor goals and that was the only disappointment. We saw last week how losing a goal straight after half-time changed the game and we can see again how quickly a goal can change the mood of a game. 'There were plenty of individual performances that were really good and we played well for the most part as a team. We showed great energy, particularly in midfield with Jacob Maddox in the first half and George McEachran in the second half, with Luke McCormick breaking things up behind them. We won that battle in midfield. 'I was pleased with the work-rate of the two wide players but just a bit frustrated with our game management, which could have been better. We were rushing free-kicks when we needed to take the sting out of the game. There might have been a few more goals for us with a bit more quality in the final third but we're pleased to score four and win against a good Arsenal side.' The youngsters return to action next weekend when they travel to Aston Villa. Before then, our development squad face two games in five days, starting a trip to Reading tomorrow (Monday).
