Under-18s report: Chelsea 2 Leicester City 0
Sat 29 Oct 2016
Our long unbeaten home record in the Under-18 Premier League stretched
into a 19th month as Jody Morris's youngsters recorded a 2-0 win at Cobham
this morning (Saturday).
Goalless at the interval, a second-half brace from Martell
Taylor-Crossdale proved the difference between the hosts and the Foxes as
the Blues remained third in the south section table following a sixth win
from six at home this term.
Luke McCormick retained his place in midfield as he continued his
ever-present record of starting in every Under-18 game so far this term.
The 17-year-old lined up at the base of a midfield diamond, with Tariq
Uwakwe and Juan Castillo in front of him. Jacob Maddox returned to the
side in the number 10 role, behind strikers Charlie Brown and
Taylor-Crossdale.
Captain Josh Grant joined Joseph Colley, Richard Nartey and Marc Guehi in
a back four protecting Jamie Cumming in goal, with the young Blues having
kept three clean sheets in their past four outings at home.
Yet it was the Foxes who recorded the first effort of the game after a
tentative opening 15 minutes, Harrison Myring skewing his strike
harmlessly wide of Cumming's upright. Guehi was inches away from
connecting to Uwakwe's inswinging delivery as he searched for a third
headed goal in three games before Taylor-Crossdale went close to adding to
his tally of eight goals this campaign.
The striker saw a low drive blocked before his second strike moments later
deflected narrowly wide of the far post. The Blues upped the ante as the
half-hour mark approached, with Maddox fashioning some space on the edge
of the box to fire straight at Cameron Yates, the Leicester goalkeeper.
Grant advanced promisingly from right-back but failed to trouble Yates,
while Taylor-Crossdale went closest in the half with a header inches wide.
The striker's frustration turned to celebration eight minutes into the
second period as Morris's men struck first to break the stalemate.
Impressive build-up play saw Castillo test Yates on the end of an inviting
left-sided cross and Taylor-Crossdale was on hand to poke in the rebound.
The search was immediately on for the killer second goal and Maddox almost
found it after 62 minutes as he was set clear in behind. The midfielder
advanced directly towards goal but took one touch too many and gave the
goalkeeper a chance to smother the ball at his feet.
Brown had the ball in the net a few minutes later but the home side were
denied a treat of a goal by the linesman's flag. Taylor-Crossdale had
threaded a perfect pass forward for Castillo, who teed up the supporting
Brown, but the forward was adjudged to have advanced beyond the last line
of defence.
As the clock ticked towards the 90-minute mark, the visitors briefly
rallied as they sensed the opportunity to steal a point, although
Cumming's goal remained largely untroubled. The points were sealed eight
minutes from time as Taylor-Crossdale hit double figures for the season,
capitalising on a loose ball in midfield before driving forward and
nestling his finish into the bottom far corner.
Dutchman Castillo stung the palms of Yates late on as the youngsters
rounded off another positive morning in the ascendancy and with a third
consecutive home clean sheet. The Blues return to action next Friday 4
November with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.
