PL2 report: Tottenham 2 Chelsea 2
Fri 6 Jan 2017
Our development squad went in front twice but were forced to settle for a
share of the Premier League 2 points away at Tottenham today (Friday).
Mason Mount's free-kick fired the visitors ahead after just five minutes
before Shayon Harrison's header six minutes before the break sent the
sides in level at half-time. The Blues restarted brightly and Solanke's
expert finish made it 2-1 before Connor Ogilvie equalised three minutes
later.
Adi Viveash opted for a 4-2-3-1 shape for the first game of the New Year
for our development squad, with Ike Ugbo leading the line up front
supported by Solanke, Mount and Charlie Wakefield. Bradley Collins
continued in goal behind a back four of Dujon Sterling, Fikayo Tomori,
Trevoh Chalobah and Fankaty Dabo, while Mukhtar Ali partnered Ruben Sammut
in midfield.
It was a perfect start to proceedings for Viveash's side as they led five
minutes after kick-off. Anton Walkes was penalised for handball following
a long ball forward and Mount stepped up to bend in a brilliant free-kick
beyond Pau Lopez for his fourth goal of the season.
Tottenham responded well and Tomori was twice required to thwart attacks
from the hosts, blocking bravely from close range before denying Harrison
as the striker bore down on goal dangerously. Solanke was handed an
opportunity to double the advantage after 16 minutes as he got on the end
of Mount's corner but his header from a central position was wide of the
target.
Joe Pritchard's influence in the game grew stronger as the half
progressed, with the midfielder's deflected effort flying behind for one
of a series of Spurs corner before he sliced over following a good cross
from Nathan Oduwa. Down the other end, Mount's strike was blocked well
after a neat exchange between the goalscorer and Solanke.
Pritchard's inswinging free-kick had Collins scrambling across goal just
after the half hour mark before Tottenham levelled before the break. Oduwa
once again supplied the delivery from the left wing and Harrison's looping
header into the far corner left Collins stranded.
It took just 10 minutes of the second period for Viveash's men to restore
a lead in the contest. A lovely move from right to left saw Ali find
Solanke, who had swapped with Mount at the break to move over to the left
side. The forward's finish was accomplished as he steered a low shot
beyond the dive of Lopez and into the far bottom corner.
However, Spurs were level again within three minutes. A corner from the
right was well delivered by Pritchard and Ogilvie escaped into space at
the front post with a clever run before flicking his header across goal
and into the far corner.
Christian Maghoma spurned a good aerial opportunity before Lopez made an
impressive diving save to deny Ugbo, springing to his left to push the
striker's header away from danger. Both sides sensed the chance to win the
game in the final stages, with the visitors looking more likely to find
the game's fifth goal.
Substitute Isaac Christie-Davies sliced a good chance wide and Ugbo,
leaning off-balance, missed the target from close range before Collins
pushed Oduwa's dipping free-kick over the bar. The final chance of the
afternoon fell to Chalobah, who rise highest to meet Mount's corner,
however the defender's header failed to trouble Lopez in the Tottenham
goal.
The draw stretches our unbeaten league run to seven matches and sees us
rise to fourth in the league table. Viveash’s side return to action next
Friday 13 January with a lunchtime trip to Leicester City.

PL2 reaction: Decent point
Sat 7 Jan 2017
Our development squad extended their unbeaten run in Premier League 2 to
seven matches as they claimed an away point following a 2-2 draw at
Tottenham yesterday (Friday).
Mason Mount and Dominic Solanke had twice put us ahead with goals early in
each half but Spurs levelled on both occasions to ensure the points were
shared between the London rivals. After the game, manager Adi Viveash
expressed mixed emotions at a result he felt could easily have gone in
favour of his side.
'It's a decent point away from home,' he told the official Chelsea website.
'To take four points from Spurs in a season is a big positive because I
can't remember many times we've done that in recent years. It was a London
derby and you could see that it was a bit feisty at times but both teams
also played some good football.
'We scored two excellent goals from Mason and Dominic but we're naturally
frustrated with the two we've conceded. They could both have been easily
avoided but unfortunately that has been the story of our season so we just
have to keep working hard to rectify it.'
Half an hour remained on the clock after the hosts's second leveller and
Viveash felt his players did well to regroup at that stage of the contest
and come strong in the latter stages. Tottenham keeper Pau Lopez made a
key save to keep out Ike Ugbo's header as the Blues fashioned the better
opportunities to snatch all three points late on.
'I was really pleased with our response at 2-2,' continued Viveash. 'We
were the dominant side in the last 10 minutes and it looked like we were
going to win it; there was a great chance for Ike and their goalkeeper has
also made a big save.
'We managed to get some young players on the pitch towards the end and
that was quite exciting to see Jacob Maddox and Harvey St Clair on either
wing. It was also pleasing to see Charlie Wakefield back after a long time
out injured. He looked physically really good and had some good moments
for us.
'It was quite an entertaining game and everyone thought beforehand that
there would be goals because both teams are probably better going forward.
We just have to keep working because we feel we've got some very good
defenders at this age group but at times they don't show their qualities
enough in the nitty-gritty side of defending. That's why we have to keep
working to improve but that's also the whole point of development.'
