PL2 report: Derby 2 Chelsea 1
Fri 5 May 2017
Our development squad were narrowly beaten on the final day of their
Premier League 2 season and will finish the campaign in fifth place.
Ike Ugbo's latest goal in a prolific term for the 18-year-old striker
briefly restored parity but strikes from Mason Bennett and Kellan Gordon
in the first half were enough to hand Derby County a crucial three points
in their fight for survival. The Blues pushed for an equaliser after the
break but were reduced to 10 men early after the restart as Trevoh
Chalobah saw red for a last-man foul. The result means we are guaranteed a
fifth-place finish, a creditable effort from a youthful group this season.
There were three changes from our last outing, a 2-2 draw against league
winners Everton a fortnight previously, as Bradley Collins, Dujon Sterling
and Josimar Quintero all returned. Collins came in to captain the side
between the sticks behind a back four of Sterling, Chalobah, Richard
Nartey and Cole Dasilva.
Quintero lined up in the number 10 role behind lone striker Ugbo, with
Jacob Maddox and Mason Mount also proving attacking support from advanced
midfield. Ruben Sammut and Kyle Scott formed the central midfield
partnership.
Derby started the final game of the season in the bottom two and needed at
least a point to avoid relegation on the night. The contest opened in the
East Midlands sunshine and it was a tentative start from both sides.
Cameron Cresswell brought a routine stop from Collins with an inswinging
free-kick from the right before the Blues threatened for the first time
after 15 minutes.
Mount advanced into the box before he was thwarted by Kyron Stabana's
sliding challenge, although the loose ball fell kindly for Dasilva and his
curling effort was tipped over the bar by Jonathan Mitchell, the Rams
stopper.
Mount started the day by being named on the shortlist for April's PL2
Player of the Month award and he caught the eye in the opening exchanges,
not just for his striking face mask worn as protection following a broken
nose sustained in training this week. The midfielder went close to
breaking the deadlock with a dipping left-footed strike on the half-volley
that dropped narrowly over the goal frame.
Chelsea were looking for a win that could see them end the campaign in
fourth spot but it was the hosts that struck the first blow. Alex Babos
had provided a warning with a free header narrowly off-target before
Bennett fired Derby in front with a strike into the far corner from the
edge of the 18-yard box.
It was the first of three goals in 10 minutes as the encounter burst into
life. The home side initially went close to doubling their advantage as
Bennett fired the ball across the face of goal but none of his supporting
teammates were able to supply the significant finishing touch. The
visitors then levelled moments later as Quintero combined with Scott and
the latter slid a pass through to Ugbo. His manager had set him the target
of chasing down the league's top scorer prior to the game and our number
nine was typically calm in front of goal, finishing beyond Mitchell for
his 25th of the season in all competitions.
The scores weren't level for long though as the battling Rams took the
lead again before the break. Emil Jakobsen caused problems advancing to
the byline down the left inside channel and he cut the ball back
invitingly for Gordon, whose scuffed strike deflected off Chalobah and
into the bottom corner.
Our deficit on the scoreboard was compounded by a numerical disadvantage
in personnel early in the second period. Bennett raced down the right and
got the wrong side of the retreating Chalobah, who was judged to have
impeded him right on the edge of the box. The referee quickly brandished a
red card for a last-man foul and the Blues were down to 10 men, although
Calum MacDonald could only fire his effort from the set-piece into an
unmoving Chelsea wall.
The Blues still harboured ambitions of taking some league points back home
with them and Sven Karic did well to slide and block Quintero's shot
before Mount's curling effort lacked the accuracy to find the far corner.
Down the other end, Jakobsen latched on to a diagonal pass from the left
but a heavy first touch inside allowed Collins the opportunity to spring
from his line and smother the ball at the striker's feet.
Fresh faces arrived from the bench to aid the visitors' cause as Harvey
St Clair joined the attack and Luke McCormick came into the midfield. The
Blues adopted a three-man defence and hoped their forward players could
unlock the door in the final third. Scott took aim from distance but his
attempt flew high into the empty stand behind the goal before Maddox
missed the target in similar fashion late on.
