Under-18s report: Reading 0 Chelsea 2
Sat 6 Jan 2018
Goals from Marcel Lavinier and Conor Gallagher made the difference in a
close contest as our Under-18s kicked off 2018 with a victory against the
Royals.
A poacher's finish by Lavinier and Gallagher's cool penalty in an
otherwise tight encounter ensured it was a winning start to the year for
our youngsters.
Versatile defender Lavinier scored his first goal in youth team football
five minutes before the interval as Jody Morris's side just about got the
better of some scrappy exchanges. A difficult match for the Blues was by
no means over, however, until our captain stepped up on 74 minutes to
score from the spot. We could have scored more in the dying moments as
Reading surged forwards but our best work took place off the ball.
The result ensured we would keep at least a six-point cushion at the top
of the southern section of the U18 Premier League, having dropped only
four points from our 12 fixtures to date.
Morris has switched between 4-4-2 and a 3-5-2 system similar to Antonio
Conte's first team set-up so far this season but opted for a 4-2-3-1
formation to try to overwhelm the opposition with our plethora of
attacking options. Tino Anjorin and Tariq Uwakwe started ahead of George
McEachran and our top scorer Charlie Brown, while Karlo Ziger replaced
Nicolas Tie between the posts in the third change from our last league
outing, a 4-4 draw with Tottenham in December.
Chelsea had the larger share of the early possession but Reading defended
resolutely and restricted the visitors to long-range efforts or solo runs
on the break. Our Glaswegian youngster Billy Gilmour came closest to
breaking the deadlock in the first 20 minutes when he hammered a shot
over the bar from 30 yards.
Morris's men grew into the game and started to swap passes more
comfortably in the build-up. Our back four were not afraid to play out of
trouble before filtering the ball down the flanks, with Tariq Lamptey and
Anjorin enjoying some luck down the right-hand side and Uwakwe also
looking for holes out wide.
Ziger proved a commanding presence in the Chelsea goal, while Gallagher
showed he liked a tackle, as Reading worked hard to offer their own
attacking threat. Our Croatian goalkeeper pulled off a great diving save
on the half-hour mark to deny Thierry Nevers, whose low shot seemed
destined for the far corner of the net.
At the other end, Uwakwe caused confusion among the Royals defenders with
his cross-come-shot in the 35th minute, but unfortunately there was no-one
in the six-yard box to convert the loose delivery. The Blues were looking
technically excellent but needed to add guile to the game in order to undo
Reading.
Lavinier's goal on 40 minutes was the perfect example. The hosts had
defended set-pieces robustly owing to their aerial strength yet they could
do nothing to stop the defender's low strike to the left of Adam Desbois,
pouncing on the turn as the ball bounced around in the box.
The match opened up in the second half and David Dodds's team were far
from out of contention. Charlie Lawrence dished out some individual skill
to whip the ball into the box shortly after the break, but Nevers's volley
whistled wide, before Oli Pendlebury required Ziger to tip his crisp
strike over the crossbar.
There was no denying the significance of the penalty which Chelsea won on
73 minutes when Roberto Nditi brought down Lamptey as he raced towards the
byline. Gallagher calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a short
stutter, then fired the ball down the middle to score his seventh league
goal of the campaign.
The Blues appeared happy to deploy our counter-attacking strategy, with
the substitute Brown and Juan Castillo occupying the space vacated by
their opponents as they chased a pathway back into the match. Although
Reading remain bottom of the table, they would have been disappointed not
to maintain their good run of form at Hogwood Park having managed to win
three games on the trot before Christmas.
For the Blues, our unbeaten run now stretches to seven matches, having
built a formidable lead in the league and reached the knockout stages of
the UEFA Youth League and U18 Premier League Cup, as well as the FA Youth
Cup. Our fourth-round tie in the prestigious competition is against West
Brom and takes place at Aldershot Town on Wednesday 17 January as we chase
a record-equalling fifth consecutive title.
Our next game is at home to Aston Villa, another of the bottom-four sides.
For the first time when the Under-18s walk out at Cobham on Saturday 13
January, it will have been more than 1,000 days, not to mention 48
matches, since we last tasted defeat on our own patch.

Under-18s reaction: Strong defence
Sun 7 Jan 2018
Youth team manager Jody Morris had plenty of praise for his side's
tactical capabilities after our Under-18s carried their winning form into
2018 away at Reading on Saturday.
On a bitterly cold morning in Berkshire, defender Marcel Lavinier marked
the beginning of his tenth year at the Chelsea Academy with his maiden
goal, a scuffed volley towards the end of a competitive first half, before
our captain Conor Gallagher was at it again from the penalty spot in the
73rd minute to kill the contest.
The Blues youngsters, who are six points clear at the top of the southern
section of the Under-18 Premier League, have become accustomed to
high-scoring matches, but Morris believes this narrower scoreline was
still a big win for his boys.
'We're very glad to have got the victory after what was always going to be
a difficult game,' he told the official Chelsea website after the game at
Hogwood Park. 'The clean sheet is probably just as pleasing as the points
and the goals. Reading are a decent team, especially from set-pieces, but
I thought we defended well.
'I was really happy with our performance, particularly off the ball. We
were a little bit sloppy at times on the ball as far as the quality of our
passing was concerned, but I was impressed by our work-rate and pressing
high up the pitch. Even though it was a scrappy game, I felt that our
quality shone through in the second half.'
The former Chelsea midfielder has employed a variety of formations so far
this season, mirroring Antonio Conte's senior side in some of the league
games while opting for a 4-4-2 diamond system in the FA Youth Cup, and he
was delighted with his team's execution of a 4-2-3-1 tailored to beating
Reading.
'I was pleased with how the boys followed the gameplan and how they set up
tactically,' he said. 'I think it's important that we practice loads of
different formations for the business end of the season, where we'll go
into games against better opposition who we haven't played much and with
more pressure on the matches.
'We wanted to offer a little bit of a threat in behind with Juan Castillo
playing higher up the pitch and also Daishawn Redan's physical presence
leading the line through the middle. With Tariq Uwakwe in a No.7 role
tucked inside, we felt that he would find decent pockets, which proved to
be the case,' Morris explained.
He singled out Gallagher and Uwakwe for their mature performances in
midfield, the former a consistent presence alongside our Glaswegian
prospect Billy Gilmour in the engine, and Uwakwe giving his rival
left-back grief on the flank.
'I thought Conor Gallagher and Tariq Uwakwe were both outstanding, on and
off the ball,' he revealed. 'As second-years, they need to start grabbing
games by the scruff of the neck and leading by example, and I felt they
did today.'
Next up for our Under-18s is a home outing against Aston Villa in the
league on Saturday 13 January before we take on West Brom in the Youth Cup
later in the month. That fixture will be open to spectators at Aldershot
Town at 7pm on Wednesday 17 January.
