https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2018/04/uyl-report--chelsea-v-porto UYL report: Chelsea 2 Porto 2 (5-4 on pens) Fri 20 Apr 2018 Our Under-19s reached the UEFA Youth League final in dramatic fashion after coming from behind to take it to penalties and then triumphing 5-4 in the shootout at the Colvoray Stadium in Nyon. Daishawn Redan's smart finish put us in front after half hour but the lead lasted just 10 minutes before Porto hit back through Diogo Queiros heading beyond Jamie Cumming. Joao Mario then fired his side in front with just 10 minutes remaining but our youngsters, winners of this competition in 2015 and 2016, showed their mental strength to battle back. Josh Grant turned a loose ball beyond the keeper to level the score at 2-2, sending the semi-final to a penalty shootout conclusion, in which Cumming was the hero with three crucial saves. The young Blues will remain in Switzerland for Monday's final, where they will take on either Manchester City or Barcelona for a chance to win the European title for the third time. Edwards made two changes, both enforced, from our quarter-final victory in Madrid as Ethan Ampadu and Jacob Maddox both missed out through injury and suspension respectively. It prompted a slight reshuffling, with Trevoh Chalobah dropped back into the three-man defence and Conor Gallagher deployed in the heart of midfield. Callum Hudson-Odoi also returned having netted 18 goals in 21 starts for our Academy teams so far this season. Chalobah was joined by Dujon Sterling and captain Grant at the back in front of goalkeeper Cumming, while Reece James and Juan Castillo retained their wing-back roles. Luke McCormick, our top scorer in the competition this term, partnered Gallagher in central midfield, with St Clair and Hudson-Odoi supporting Daishawn Redan in attack. Porto made two changes themselves from a quarter-final win over Tottenham and they looked to start well in the glorious Swiss sunshine. An early penalty shout was waved away but they showed an eagerness to get after the ball and a composure to exchange passes when moving into our final third, albeit kept largely away from Cumming's goal. Castillo carried the first threat for the Blues, advancing well down the left wing and crossing towards his compatriot Redan, though the ball's flight was just too high for our Dutch centre-forward. Cumming made the first save of the afternoon, claiming comfortably from Romario Baro's effort, as good defensive work in the 18-yard box from Sterling and Chalobah largely kept the Porto threat at bay. It took a while for Edwards's side to settle but they soon found their rhythm and started to pose their own attacking danger. St Clair's inviting cross found Redan but the striker's header was deflected behind before the deadlock was broken with the half-hour mark approaching. A loose pass was pounced on and McCormick stepped into a shooting position, his drive kept out by keeper Diogo Costa but palmed into the path of Redan, who was onside and slotted the ball low into the net. Castillo then went close to doubling our lead, drifting infield from the left and firing a shot just wide of the far post, but it was Porto who enjoyed a rally late in the half, culminating in their equaliser. Sterling competed well in the air against Santiago Irala and Gallagher made a similarly important aerial clearance from Diogo Bessa's dangerous free-kick but a set-piece five minutes before half-time proved our undoing. A corner from the right was floated into the middle and Diogo Leite escaped the marking to plant a header into the top corner. The Blues almost found an instant reply as Castillo's centre was met by Sterling in the air and the wing-back’s header looked destined to hit the net but for an excellent reflex save from Costa. St Clair then fired low to bring another stop from the keeper as the sides left the field at the midway point of the semi-final with the score at 1-1. The start to the second period remained cagey as both sides appreciated the high stakes with a place in the final up for grabs. Hudson-Odoi was almost handed a sight at goal after a slack pass back to the keeper but he couldn't quite bring the ball under control, while McCormick's strike with our first shot of the restart lacked the accuracy to trouble Costa. Edwards introduced Charlie Brown midway through the half and changed the system to 4-3-3, which resulted in the contest shifting from tight to open. Brown immediately made an impact, finding Hudson-Odoi with a lovely pass, but the number 10's flicked finish bounced just beyond the far post. Gallagher also saw a shot saved but Porto continued to create chances too and Diogo Bessa's deflected drive just nicked wide as the game moved into the final quarter of an hour. Down the other end, St Clair's curling effort clipped the outside of the post as both teams pushed for a third goal. Cumming made a smart low save to keep hold of Irala's stinging drive but he could do nothing when Porto took the lead with 10 minutes remaining. Romario Baro scampered in behind and was initially denied by the keeper but substitute Joao Mario squeezed the ball beyond Sterling on the line. Edwards spoke in the build-up about questions being asked of his youngsters in this competition and this was surely the biggest test they had faced to date. We pushed hard but struggled to create any clear chance before a corner handed us an opportunity in the 86th minute. The ball was only partially cleared and Chalobah kept the danger alive by heading back into the six-yard box, where Grant swivelled and fired the ball into the bottom corner. It was a captain's goal and one that kept our European ambitions alive in the nick of time. With no winner after 90 minutes, the semi-final was decided by penalties and the shootout continued to bring drama. Brown saw his strike saved but Porto couldn't take the initiative as Cumming made the first of three significant stops. A save from James did give Porto a chance to win it but Rui Pires was denied before Cumming saved again from Diogo Bessa to send us into Monday's final. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2018/04/ uyl-reaction--learning-while-winning.html UYL reaction: Learning while winning Sat 21 Apr 2018 Our Under-19s came from behind, both in normal time and in the penalty shootout, to eventually emerge as victors in the UEFA Youth League semi-finals. Porto led and looked odds-on to put the two-times winners out of the competition with 10 minutes remaining but Josh Grant's equaliser four minutes from time took the semi-final contest to penalties and Jamie Cumming, our goalkeeper, proved the hero in the shootout as he saved three spot-kicks to send us into Monday's final against Barcelona. After the game, manager Joe Edwards reflected on a significant challenge against the Portuguese opposition, though he felt our luck was due following earlier shootout defeats this campaign. 'It's certainly a nervy way to win,' said Edwards after the final whistle. 'From a coach's point of view, it's not the way you'd always want to win but in terms of a penalty shootout, we were due a win really. 'We've had three this season in the Checkatrade Trophy and lost one in the semi-final, which was a massive game for us, so we know how the Porto boys feel. Some of our players have been in shootouts this season and missed, they remember that feeling so to have the courage to step up and score is a big credit to them. 'It was a really tough game because both teams had spells where they were dominant. I think overall across the 90 minutes we just about shaded it but we usually dominate games so that shows Porto gave us a really good challenge.' https://twitter.com/ChelseaFC/status/987318619104251904 That moment!! The momentum of the game swung both ways, which demonstrated how well-matched and even the contest was. It was a contrast to the second semi-final, where Barcelona beat Manchester City 5-4, in the sense that tactical intelligence and patience was required. 'The players can learn a lot from this because it was a frustrating game to play in,' Edwards claimed. 'In terms of a typical European game, technically there wasn't a lot of really attractive football on show. It was very tactical and very cagey, which is good for the players to experience. 'We were really pleased with our start to the game and going 1-0 up so to get pinned back with a set-piece goal was disappointing. We have to learn from that because you get punished at this level. This was one of the toughest games we've had this season. Porto are a really good team so individually and as a team, we can learn so much from this game.' The young Blues lifted this trophy in 2015 and 2016 but were denied the opportunity to defend their title last season due to our absence from the Champions League and UEFA rules, since amended, that didn't guarantee the holders a direct route back into the competition. An Anglo-Spanish final now awaits, pitting two of the three former champions against one another, and Edwards believes his players are determined to take the trophy back home. 'It's another really good achievement,' he said when asked about our third appearance in the UEFA Youth League final. 'It says a lot about the players because they come right through the system at our Academy. This character is something we're all big on as coaches and we're about to play in a seventh FA Youth Cup final in a row as well so to consistently go all the way in such tough competitions is massive for us. However, we didn't come to Nyon just to get to the final – we came here to try to get that trophy back so we need to recover well and focus on Monday now.' Chelsea Under-19s versus Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League final takes place on Monday at the Colvaray Stadium in Switzerland, kick-off 4pm UK time.
