Under-18s report: Southampton 1 Chelsea 3
11 Aug 2018
Chelsea Under-18s made a winning beginning to the new league season as
goals from Tino Anjorin, Thierno Ballo and George Nunn gave Andy Myers a
victory in his first game in charge.

The Blues were bristled and frustrated in the opening half hour but soon
clicked into gear and broke the deadlock from the penalty spot as Anjorin
converted having himself been brought down in the box. Ballo made it 2-0
within minutes of the opener, beating the goalkeeper to a long pass over
the top and rolling the ball into an unguarded goal.
The second period saw less action, particularly after substitute Nunn had
opened his Chelsea account with our third goal, a precise side-foot finish
swept into the top corner. Jon Russell could have added a fourth, his
header thumping back off the crossbar, before Southampton scored a late
consolation from a corner.
It left a slight stain on the opening morning of the campaign, though
three points at a traditionally tricky venue for our youngsters represents
a positive start.
Myers selected a team mixed with first-year and second-year scholars for
his first official game as manager of the Chelsea Under-18s, handing
debuts to new signings Ian Maatsen and Ballo. It was 4-2-3-1 from the
start for the visitors, who opted for Armando Broja to lead the attacking
line supported by Ballo, Marcel Lewis and Anjorin, the latter having
scored our seventh goal in April's FA Youth Cup final victory over
Arsenal.
There was experience in central midfield in the form of Clinton Mola and
Jon Russell, while James Clark, Marcel Lavinier, Jack Wakely and Maatsen
lined up across defence in front of goalkeeper Karlo Ziger.

James Clark wins a tackle for the young Blues
The Blues were beaten 4-0 on their last trip to Southampton and arrived on
the South Coast with a patchy record at Staplewood, having won just once
on their previous 11 visits. However, this was a side determined to live
up to the standards set throughout last season's Quadruple-winning
success.
Southampton had a similar mix of experience and new talent in their ranks
and they made life difficult for Myers's men early on, hassling in
midfield and offering a physical challenge. Ballo's early strike failed to
worry Jack Bycroft in the Saints goal, the Austrian teenager off balance
and off target, while down the other end Ziger gathered comfortably as
Sean Brennan's deflected effort registered as the first Southampton shot
on target.
Bycroft was more severely tested as early as the 12th minute when a neat
move fashioned a good opportunity for Anjorin, who hit the ball first time
towards goal from Ballo's pass but was denied by the keeper's smart reflex
save.
Yet the home side grew stronger as the half went on and frustrated the
defending league champions. Wakely had to be alert in covering across the
back-line and thwarting the progress of striker Christian Norton after a
quarter of an hour, while Ziger was brave at the feet of Kornelius Hansen
at the end of another enterprising move.
Norton was proving a nuisance to the Blues defenders, forcing mistakes and
disrupting our play out from the back, though the visitors were able to
rally late in the half and their quality in the final third proved
significant. Bycroft produced an impressive flying save to tip Mola's
long-range drive behind for a corner, from which Lewis narrowly fired
over, before Chelsea had a penalty nine minutes ahead of the break.

Tino Anjorin opens the scoring from the spot
The chance came from a rare slack pass from the hosts in their own half
and the attacking trio of Ballo, Broja and Anjorin were on to it in a
flash. Broja advanced and fed Anjorin, who skipped away from one defender
and into the box before David Agbontahoma bundled him over from behind. It
was a clumsy challenge and one the referee could not ignore. Anjorin got
up and rifled the spot-kick high into the net to break the deadlock.
Three minutes later, it was 2-0. A simple goal doubled our lead as
Russell's floated ball forward dropped invitingly on the edge of the box
and keeper Bycroft proved indecisive, allowing Ballo the simple task of
winning the challenge and rolling in his first Chelsea goal.

goal
The attacking midfielder could have further added to the scoreline before
the interval but was denied by a smart save from the goalkeeper, while the
unmarked Dan Bartlett spurned a glorious headed chance to halve the
deficit as he nodded over from six yards out.
It was a lead that perhaps didn't reflect the complete balance of play in
the first half but a clinical edge had served Myers's side well. Ziger
made another smart save after the restart, once again denying Hansen,
before the Blues were forced into a change as a knock to Maatsen meant he
had to withdraw from the action.
The switch saw Mola deployed at left-back and the introduction of Nunn to
the offensive line, with Anjorin dropping deeper into central midfield,
and it paid almost instant dividends as the striker signed from Crewe
Alexandra this summer extended our advantage with his second touch. After
instigating the attack to release Broja, the fair-haired forward followed
it up and swept the loose ball away from Bycroft and into the far top
corner.

George Nunn opened his Chelsea account with a sweeping side-foot finish in
the second half
It was more comfortable for the visitors for the remaining 35 minutes of
the contest, the Saints shorn of confidence and hope of a comeback.
Russell headed against the crossbar after a cross from Wakely but it was
Southampton who found the net late on as former Chelsea Academy defender
Kayne Ramsay stooped to head beyond Ziger for a consolation in the final
few minutes.
Our youngsters return to action next weekend with a home fixture against
Leicester City. Before then, our development squad begin their Premier
League 2 season against Everton at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. Click here to
