The young Blues, runners-up in the competition last term and winners in both 2015 and 2016, produced a ruthless attacking performance to dismantle the youth champions of Norway on a sunny afternoon at Cobham. There were hat-tricks for Daishawn Redan and Billy Gilmour, a brace for Charlie Brown and a first goal since March for George McEachran as Joe Edwards's side hit double figures and effectively ended the contest ahead of the return in Scandinavia later this month. There were four starting survivors from our bitterly disappointing defeat in the final against Barcelona at the end of April, with Jamie Cumming retained in goal behind Marc Guehi, Juan Castillo and Redan. Guehi was joined in a back three by captain Joseph Colley and 16-year-old Ian Maatsen, while Castillo and Tariq Lamptey continued in the wing-back roles they have made their own in Edwards’s development squad line-up. McEachran anchored in central midfield alongside Conor Gallagher and Gilmour, while Brown partnered Redan up front. https://i.imgur.com/KCPgsoe.jpg
Molde lined up in a 4-3-3 system, albeit with their wingers assigned defensive responsibilities and their shape designed to close spaces and frustrate. While in control of possession early on, the hosts focused on moving their opponents across the field but struggled to fashion opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. Their first chance of note came from a set-piece, McEachran swinging a deep corner towards the back post and Guehi stretching to meet the ball in the air, though the defender was unable to keep his header down and it looped harmlessly over the bar. However, the Blues soon broke the deadlock to establish an advantage in the contest. Gallagher carried the ball into the 18-yard box but couldn't find a clear path to goal, his shot deflected but falling invitingly into the path of Brown, who finished from close range for his fourth goal of the season. https://i.imgur.com/KG2zf0A.jpg
There was a momentary scare moments later in the Blues six-yard box as Cumming lost his grip on a high ball and Emil Breivik was handed a sight at goal, though the midfielder's effort was blocked. The Domestic Champions pathway is a new experience for our Under-19s and provides an opportunity to experience home-and-away knockout football on the continental stage. With a second leg in Norway to follow in three weeks' time, Edwards urged his players to maximise home advantage and three goals in the space of four minutes midway through the half placed them in a commanding position. Lamptey's eager endeavours down the right flank helped double our lead after 23 minutes as the wing-back's delivery was fired into the near post and flicked towards goal by Redan, although the final touch appeared to come off a defender positioned right in front of goalkeeper Oliver Petersen. Gilmour then dragged a low drive across the face of goal and wide but the Scotland Under-21 international produced much more finesse with his next opportunity. Gallagher this time turned provider from the right, floating a perfect cross into the middle for Gilmour to plant a firm header back across goal and beyond the keeper's reach. https://i.imgur.com/h5ok0Zq.jpg
Billy Gilmour heads in the first goal of his hat-trick Redan made it 4-0 a minute later at the end of an incisive attack from one end of the pitch to the other. Brown was sent chasing down the left channel and provided a low first-time ball into the box for his strike partner to sweep into the net for his first goal since August. The Norwegians were shaken and their confidence understandably suffered in the face of relentless Chelsea pressure. Gallagher twice threatened to add his name to the scoresheet, first bringing a decent save from Petersen with a left-footed strike before a well-struck effort was blocked by a defender on the edge of the box. With half-time approaching, the visitors would have been eyeing a resilient period to keep the deficit at four but three further goals in six minutes before the break effectively put the contest to bed with a game-and-a-half still to play. Gilmour volleyed in his second of the afternoon, an eye-catching finish at the end of a slick passing move from Edwards's side and another assist for Lamptey. Redan scored our sixth after 39 minutes after another impressive attacking move before Brown gave us a 7-0 half-time advantage with a superb individual effort, jinking his way to goal from the left byline before bending his finish into the far bottom corner. https://i.imgur.com/052qXVv.jpg
Tariq Lamptey recorded a flurry of assists for the Blues The second period continued in similar fashion, with the home side demonstrating the prowess in this competition that has seen them reach the final in each of their previous three seasons of involvement. Petersen delayed Redan's hat-trick with a smart save after Gallagher had won a header from a hanging corner but the Dutchman completed his treble a minute later, rifling high into the net after Gallagher's attempt had been blocked. Gilmour then made sure the match ball would be contested as he found the net with another header, directed delightfully into the top corner after Castillo's cross. The left wing-back went close to scoring himself after 65 minutes, advancing down the flank before driving a low strike towards the far corner and forcing a fingertip save from the visiting goalkeeper. Double figures were soon reached though as Redan played the role of provider, jinking into the box and away from defenders before laying the ball off invitingly for McEachran, whose typically quick feet dazzled Petersen as he clipped a delightful finish over the onrushing keeper. https://i.imgur.com/Qp7cReQ.jpg
George McEachran on the ball Changes were soon made by the hosts, who utilised the new UEFA rule of being able to make up to five substitutions. McEachran, Guehi, Castillo and Redan were withdrawn, their work for the day done in devastating fashion, though momentum was hindered somewhat as a result and Molde pulled an unlikely goal back with 14 minutes remaining as substitute Anders Iversen finished a cross from the right. An away goal conceded may well have upset the defenders on the field but will surely count for little in the wider context of this tie. The second leg at the Aker Stadion in Norway takes place on Wednesday 24 October, with the winners progressing to face either KR Reykjavik or Elfsborg in the second knockout round. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2018/10/4/uyl-reaction--thrilling-start UYL reaction: Thrilling start 04 Oct 2018 Our UEFA Youth League campaign began in thrilling fashion at Cobham yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) as Joe Edwards's Under-19s hit double figures and recorded a 10-1 victory over the Norwegian side Molde. https://i.imgur.com/3UytKUd.jpg
After the game, the manager reflected on an emphatic scoreline and a performance that more than merited such a big first-leg win. 'We've spoken in the last few days about how this is a different style of competition than we've been in before,' Edwards explained. 'Normally we come in at a group stage but this year it's straight into knockout football and that means it's important to get a really good result in the home leg. 'Teams often come to Cobham with the approach of sitting deep and being difficult to beat, which can sometimes be quite frustrating. I guess that is a testament to how strong we are and our record in this competition over recent years. We've all been part of games where you start forcing things and you can't get any rhythm but all credit to the boys because they did exactly what we spoke about before the game.' After two defeats in a week in two different competitions, Edwards was pleased with the response of his youngsters as they established a commanding advantage before the return leg in Norway later this month. 'The intensity of our basics was really high, the speed with which we were playing the short and simple passes meant Molde couldn't cope with us, and some of the goals we scored were fantastic,' he added. 'We've had a really difficult week having lost 3-0 at Newport and then 3-1 against Liverpool so it was good to finish like that before the international break. Scoring a lot of goals was evidence of the way we've been working and what we've been trying to implement with this squad. Hopefully it gives them that belief to keep believing in what we're doing.'
