Under-18s report: Brighton 1 Chelsea 2
06 Oct 2018
Our Under-18s came out on top with a hard-fought victory on the south
coast as a stoppage-time winner from Henry Lawrence snatched the points
for Andy Myers's side.

The Blues had to show brawn as well as brains on a rainy morning at
Brighton and it took 76 minutes to break the deadlock. Tino Anjorin came
off the bench to make the difference, firing a brilliant effort in off the
underside of the bar, though the hosts quickly levelled as Ryan Longman
converted from a corner.
It looked likely to ensure a share of the spoils until Lawrence netted for
the second successive weekend, nodding in two minutes into added time.
Myers made five changes from the side that ran out 5-1 winners in the
domestic cup competition last weekend, with Armando Broja returning to
lead the line up front and Thierno Ballo, scorer of a hat-trick against
Norwich, retained in an attacking support role alongside George Nunn.
It was three at the back once again as Sam McClelland, Dynel Simeu and
skipper Jack Wakely protected Jake Askew in goal, while Marcel Lavinier
and Ian Maatsen operated in the wing-back positions. Lawrence partnered
Jon Russell in central midfield, the pair both having netted in the
victory over the Canaries.

Brighton started the morning five positions below the Blues in the
southern league standings, though two wins from three at home underlined
their strength on the south coast. The visitors started brightest, both
figuratively and literally in their all-yellow away strip, with home
goalkeeper Roco Rees tested inside the opening two minutes.
Broja made the forward advance into the box, his momentum picked up by
Ballo and the loose ball falling kindly for Nunn 15 yards from goal,
though Rees adjusted quickly to the forward's deflected drive and dropped
to push the ball from danger with a strong right hand.
The hosts fashioned a sight at goal of their own moments later as a move
down the left ended with an effort for Danny Cashman but the striker's
connection was wayward and Askew was able to comfortably grasp the ball in
mid-air. Myers's men created the clearest opportunities in the opening
exchanges but Rees's early exertions were the most severely tested the
Seagulls stopper proved to be until much later in the half.

Jon Russell bends a free-kick just over the bar
Russell's free-kick was invitingly positioned on the edge of the box but
whipped harmlessly over before Broja flicked the ball off-target from
close range after Maatsen's set-piece delivery from the right had caused
problems in the Brighton box.
While enjoying the majority of possession, our youngsters were struggling
to convert that into an advantage on the scoreboard and Lawrence was next
to miss the target, though there was little more the midfielder could do
as he stretched to reach a high cross from Ballo. A more subtle touch was
required from the Blues in the final third.
Broja then warmed the palms of Rees on a chilly, grey morning by the
seaside before a soft free-kick gave Brighton a chance to trouble Askew.
Jack Spong set the ball up on the right of the 18-yard box and looked to
bend it left-footed towards goal but instead fired straight into the
unmoving Chelsea wall.

Armando Broja on the ball
Longman was next to cause concern with a forward foray, his jinking run
down the left bringing him into the box but the narrowing angle proved too
difficult to master and the winger's strike went into the side-netting.
Substitute Tareq Shihab made a crucial late block to deny Lavinier from 10
yards before the best opportunity of the half came in stoppage time.
It took some clever craft to conjure the chance as Maatsen lined up to
deliver an inswinging corner before laying the ball back for Russell, who
curled the ball in with perfect accuracy and weight. Among a six-yard box
packed with tall teenagers, the unlikely beneficiary was Ballo but the
Austrian was thwarted by a super spread-eagled save from the keeper.
There was a similar theme to the second half as Chelsea kept probing and
Brighton continued to contain, while also harbouring hopes of earning all
three points on the counter-attack. Broja burst through the middle but
dragged a shot wide of the far post before a neat move found Maatsen in
space down the left but the Dutchman's low cross ran all the way across
the 18-yard box.
The Seagulls kept providing reminders of their direct danger on the break
and Cashman fired just the wrong side of the near upright after being set
into space by Steffan Vukoje's clever reverse pass.
Myers's frustrations grew further after 62 minutes as Rees's impressive
performance continued. Our approach play was patient, allowing Russell the
time and space to deliver towards Broja, who flicked an instinctive header
towards goal. The ball looped and looked destined to drop in but Rees
sprung to save Brighton again, pushing the ball brilliantly over the bar.

Down the other end, Peter Gwargis's deflected drive had Askew scrambling
as it spun just over the frame of his goal, while Cashman also went close
with a strike across goal that lacked the requisite accuracy. In the end,
Myers's substitutes made the difference. Marcel Lewis's mis-hit cross
almost deceived Rees but instead brought another fine save from the
keeper, though there was nothing he could do to stop his side falling
behind with 14 minutes remaining.
The game needed something special to break the deadlock and Anjorin came
off the bench to provide it, the England youth international's dipping
drive beating the keeper via the underside of the bar for his fourth goal
of the season.
However, the lead lasted just four minutes as Brighton found a quick
equaliser from a set-piece, which was turned in by the unmarked Longman.
As the clock ticked down and the rain started to fall with increasing
intensity, it looked like it would be a frustrating day on the road for
the visitors. Lawrence went close to winning it but the impressive Rees
intervened again, clawing out a header after Lewis's drive had deflected
up into the air.

Lawrence heads in the stoppage-time winner
With seconds remaining, the defending league champions snatched a
stoppage-time winner. Lewis turned provider from the left, floating a
lovely ball into the six-yard box, which was cushioned into the bottom
corner off the post by Lawrence. It prompted wild celebrations from the
visitors, who recorded their fifth win in a row.
