Under-18s report: Chelsea 2 Norwich City 1
03 Nov 2018
Our Under-18s edged a tight and physical match with Norwich to give coach
Andy Myers a seventh win in a row on his birthday.

A strong wind at Cobham made conditions difficult, and that showed in a
scrappy first half of few chances and even less time and space on the
ball.
However, the Blues came out stronger at the start of the second half,
taking the lead through a Jon Russell penalty after Thierno Ballo had been
clipped in the box.
The players had to dig deep after being pegged back by an equaliser within
a minute, but found our own quick response to retake the lead through a
wonder strike by Jack Wakely, who thumped in from 35 yards to open his
account for the Under-18s in style.
Myers made several changes at the back and up front to the team which had
beaten West Ham 5-0 two weeks ago. Wakely kept his place at the heart of
the defence, but either side of him Pierre Ekwah came in for Dynel Simeu
and Marcel Lavinier dropped into back three having previously played on
the right. Karlo Ziger continued in goal.
His place at wing-back was filled by James Clark, and Jordan Aina replaced
Ian Maatsen on the left, with Jon Russell and Henry Lawrence continuing in
the middle Thierno Ballo dropped back to a supporting role in attack,
alongside George Nunn, with Armando Broja returning to lead the line.
It only took a matter of seconds for Chelsea to get their first sight of
goal through Russell, when a cross found it's way right through to Aina on
the left flank, who laid it off for Russell on the edge of the box, but
his low shot was deflected just wide.
Norwich set their own stall out early too, looking to use their pace to
get in behind our defence, Ziger twice having to rush out of his goal to
sweep up dangerous high balls in the opening exchanges.
Broja was twice denied by Norwich keeper William Johnson, first firing
straight him after latching on to Henry Lawrence through ball, and again
with a brilliant save from close range after Ballo had squared across the
face of goal.
Ziger was also called into action, producing an excellent save of his own
to deny Spencer Keller one-on-one, with the striker's speed running in
behind causing Chelsea plenty of problems. Going forward, we saw plenty of
the ball in the opening 20 minutes, but struggling to find space and time,
with the Canaries staying compact and pressing the man in possession
relentlessly, especially in the final third.
When we did manage to work some space in advanced positions it tended to
be through wing-backs Clark and Aina, but the Blues were finding it
difficult getting on the end of some promising crosses in a crowded
penalty box.

Russell scores from the penalty spot.
Nunn did manage to fashion a chance in a more central area, though, being
played down the inside-left channel by Ballo, but dragged his left-footed
shot wide of the far post. Norwich followed up with their best chance of
the game so far, Josh Giurgi getting on the end of a long ball and cutting
inside to lay the ball off for Tyrese Omotoye, but the striker blazed his
shot over the bar under pressure from Ekwah.
We finished the half strongly, with Russell in particular starting to
exert his influence in midfield and Aina finding more and more room wide
on the left, but couldn't find a way through the physical Norwich defence,
going in at the break goalless.
Myers was forced to make a change at half-time, with Sam McClelland
replacing Clark. That saw McClelland take up position on the right of the
back three, with Lavinier moving up to fill the right wing-back spot
vacated by Clark.
It was good work down that right side that led to the breakthrough, when
Ballo got to Lavinier's deflected cross first and was caught by the
stretching defender, the referee pointing straight to the penalty spot.
Russell stepped up and calmly sent to keeper the wrong way with his kick,
slotting it into the right-hand side of the goal.
Our lead lasted less than a minute, though, as Ziger came to claim a long,
lofted free-kick but misread the flight of the ball in the strong
crosswind, allowing the unmarked Andrew Omobamidele to volley in at the
back post.

Mola congratulates Wakely on his terrific winner.
We tried to hit straight back ourselves, Lavinier forcing a great save
from Johnson low at his right-hand post, but we were soon back ahead with
a wonderful goal. There didn't seem much danger when centre-back Wakely
picked up the ball in a central position 35 yards out, but given time and
space he struck an unstoppable powerful effort which arrowed straight into
the top corner, giving Johnson no chance at all this time. Not a bad way
to score your first goal in this age group.
The relentless pace of the second half was briefly interrupted when Ballo
came off worse in a heavy collision with Norwich substitute Anis Mehmeti,
requiring lengthy treatment. He briefly managed to continue but was
clearly feeling the effects of the challenge and soon had to bring his
afternoon to and end, walking off holding his ribs to be replaced by
Marcel Lewis.
That break seemed to calm things down a bit, perhaps helped by Norwich
starting to run out of steam having pressed relentlessly throughout the
game. That allowed Chelsea to exert more control over proceedings, and now
it was the visitors who were struggling to make the ball stick in the
final third.
We were still carrying a threat ourselves, with Aina the next to try his
hand at a spectacular effort, but his looping, curling shot from the
corner of the box didn't drop fast enough and landed on the roof of the
goal.
There was a frantic end to the game, as Norwich desperately tried to get
the ball forward quickly in search of an equaliser, and a few heated
moments as Lavinier and Broja tried to see the game out in the right
corner of the pitch.
There was time for one last effort on goal, though, when Broja did well to
wriggle his way free in the box under heavy pressure, but he could only
find the side-netting from a tight angle.
However, it didn't matter as Ziger's goal went untroubled in the closing
stages as we comfortably saw out four minutes of injury time to record
another win and give Myers three points on his 44th birthday, maintaning
the pressure on Tottenham and Arsenal at the top of U18 Premier League
table.

Under-18s reaction: Finding a different way
04 Nov 2018
Andy Myers thinks a tough match against accomplished opponents and in
challenging conditions was an invaluable experience for his team after
their 2-1 win over Norwich.
The Blues overcame strong gusting winds and a physical, energetic Canaries
side to earn a narrow victory at Cobham, our Under-18s' seventh in a row
in all competitions.
While their coach admitted the overall performance left a little to be
desired, he was pleased to see his players adapting to find new ways to
win after seeing their usual game nullified in a difficult goalless first
half.
'It's a great learning experience when you can do that,' he explained.
'The thing they have to understand is that when the conditions are like
that, we may have to change it a little bit. We have to try and find that
different way out. Football's not always played the same, sometimes you
have to find that longer ball.
'We did that in the second half and it stretched the game a little bit. It
wasn't so much tactical as getting it into them a little bit at half-time,
it was more about getting the players to do things better on and off the
ball. We have to be able to do that in these conditions as well, because
you're going to get that no matter what level you play at. You can talk
about the conditions, but we need to be better on the ball, it was a bit
sloppy at times.
'We were probably a bit lucky to go in at half-time 0-0. We played a lot
better in the second half, but not as well as we could. Take nothing away
from Norwich, though. They were very well organised and it made it a very,
very tough game, so it was pleasing to come through it 2-1.'

Wakely celebrates his goal against Norwich with Marcel Lavinier
One player who certainly made his presence felt in that second half was
captain Jack Wakely, as the centre-back scored a screamer of a winning
goal from 35 yards, the first time he has registered on the score sheet
for the Under-18s.
'We did some finishing practice in training and, whether it's right or
wrong, Jack was probably our best finisher,' said Myers. 'It wasn't by
fluke that he was hitting the top corners in training.
'When he took the ball he was positive with his first touch, he wanted to
hit it on his left foot, and he showed that again in the game. It was a
great strike and I was pleased for him.'
