On Bulls, individual characters compose team character
Team backs up its family talk with loyalty
The subject never has come up between Luol Deng and Derrick Rose, one of
those unspoken bonds that bind teammates and forge lasting trust.
Deng said he never has felt the need to thank Rose for the tack he took
during free agency last summer, when the Bulls wooed Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade
and LeBron James — the latter of whom just happens to play Deng's position.
The path Rose took is old news now. He didn't dissuade anybody from coming,
but he didn't persuade them to sign up either. Rose, in so few words, more or
less said: I want to win. Whoever wants to be part of that, fine by me.
As the longest-tenured Bull, Deng has had seven seasons to understand the NBA
is a business. He also has had three seasons alongside Rose to understand
brotherhood.
And as the Bulls begin the Eastern Conference finals Sunday night against the
Heat at the United Center, Deng openly admits how much Rose's stance meant to
him — and how it has helped pay dividends all season.
"We all have each other's back on this team," Deng told the Tribune. "It's
the tightest team I've ever been on. And that has been a big part of our
success.
"Derrick and I have a good relationship on and off the court. We understand
each other's game well. And even last year, Joakim (Noah), Derrick and I put
a lot into it together.
"There were a lot of times it didn't go our way, but we always would talk
about what we needed to do to get better and how hard we were working. That
might've played something into it where Derrick felt like, 'Lu has been here.
He has worked hard.' And he didn't do anything during free agency."
Rightfully or wrongly, the Heat have developed a reputation of a star-studded
cast cutting corners to join forces, taking the easy route of free agency to
combine All-Star talent without developing a true team. It's one of the
subplots to this juicy series: talent versus team.
That's not to say the Heat don't display teamwork or the Bulls don't have
talent. Rose's Most Valuable Player trophy says otherwise. It is to say the
Heat roster is filled with bit role players around the axis of their Big
Three, while the Bulls won a league-high 62 games with multiple contributors
beyond Rose's brilliance.
And Rose's refusal to turn on a teammate is only one example.
Perhaps the turning point of the Bulls-Hawks series came in the late hours
after Game 2. Joakim Noah had just dropped 19 points and 14 rebounds on the
Hawks to help even the conference semifinals. Asked about his performance,
Noah, out of nowhere, offered an impassioned defense of Carlos Boozer, who
had struggled to the point of hearing boos from the home crowd.
Asked why he did so, Noah remained emotional on the subject days later.
"When you boo any of us, you're booing the entire team," Noah said. "That's
the way we think."
Perhaps it's coincidence — and improving health — that Boozer finished the
semis with back-to-back double-doubles. But Boozer knows it's easier to carry
the weight of expectations on one's back when a teammate is watching yours.
"I love my teammates," Boozer said. "We've been defending each other all
season no matter who was going through what. We've had each other's back.
"We're like a family. I know a lot of people say that, but we really are. It
felt great to have everybody on my side in this locker room. That's how we've
been all season. We don't listen to what you guys write about. We listen to
each other and are focused on that."
You can't play the type of defense the Bulls play without trust. You
certainly can't lead the league at that end without teamwork.
Watch any Bulls game closely. Teammates hold each other accountable all the
time. Early in Game 4 of the Hawks series, Rose pulled Boozer aside and
demanded he rotate defensively.
"We all yell at each other, from Derrick to the 15th guy," Deng said. "It's
really cool. (Brian) Scalabrine is on the bench yelling. John Lucas is
yelling. (Jannero) Pargo is telling me stuff to do. Rasual (Butler) is giving
me tips. Everybody fits in. … Everyone is on the same page. And that's why
we hold each other accountable.
"It's just about winning. Like Jo said, when you're out there booing one of
us, we know the work that person is putting into it to try to perform. And
that's why we defend him."
