SANTA MONICA – For more than two hours, Tony Snell sat motionless with his
eyes glued to the NBA Draft on television and a stoic expression on his face.
Surrounded by roughly 80 anxious friends and family at an NBA Draft watch
party at the Thom Thom Club, the 21-year old Riverside King alumnus was
waiting to hear his dream of playing in the NBA realized and was as focused
on the TV as he often was on the court.
Finally, a call came through to his agent. Word began circulating around that
Snell was about to be picked by the Chicago Bulls with the 20th overall pick.
And still, Snell was still and silent. But when Commissioner David Stern
finally stepped to the podium and announced to a national audience that the
Bulls had selected Snell, he finally moved – he put his head down in his
hands, and wept.
“Just all hard work and all the sacrifices I’ve been through and all the
people that helped me get here,” he said, “it was just too emotional and I
couldn’t hold it in.”With screams and slaps on the back coming from
everywhere, Snell continued to cry. With Drake’s “Started from the Bottom”
blasting, he finally stood up and hugged tightly all of his family and close
friends, wiping his red eyes.
“It’s amazing, it’s a feeling that I can’t even describe,” said his
mother Sherika Brown. “I got all kinds of things on my mind right now. I’m
happy, excited, anxious, all at the same time…It is a dream come true.”
Snell helped King win a CIF-SS Div. 1AA title in 2009 and led New Mexico to
back-to-back Mountain West Conference Tournament championships, winning
tournament MVP last season. Now he will suit up for his favorite team growing
up.
“I’m really happy (to be going to Chicago),” he said. “I loved watching
Michael Jordan and to get the opportunity to play for the same team as he did
is a dream come true.”Chicago isn’t just a good spot for him because it was
his favorite team growing up. His agent Mitchell Butler believes it’s the
best place for Snell to flourish as a basketball player.“I don’t think we
could’ve picked a better team for him,” said Butler, who played eight years
in the NBA. “Their player development from a standpoint of taking players in
the draft and building them up has been second to no one in the league, so
that’s what we're probably most happy about. We know he’ll reach his full
potential with the Bulls.”
Butler and Snell said they knew going into the draft that the Bulls were very
interested in drafting him.
“He had worked out for them once and then we held a pro day 10-15 days later
and they brought the whole contingency,” Butler said. “During the pro day
when we had Tony going through some specific drills, we were watching (Bulls
head coach) Tom Thibodeau, just the expression on his face, so we had a
pretty good idea that he was on an extremely short list for them.”

牛,尤其Noah、Deng的hard work會是他成長最好的樣本,尤其Snell也是個hard work
Snell’s agent Michael Butler had a lot of interesting things to say about
where he thinks Snell should’ve gone, why Chicago is a good fit and if he
can contribute right away. Here is some of what Butler had to say.
“We knew (the Bulls) liked Tim Hardaway Jr. as well and that was going to be
the primary competition. As much as I want to say I was 100 percent certain
the Bulls were going to take him, I did have a little bit of nerves in my
stomach because if he had gotten past them the teams that would’ve probably
taken him – Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers – liked
him but I don’t know if they loved him like the Bulls did. The Bulls think
that they have a hidden gem.”
“”(20th overall) isn’t indicative of where he should’ve gone in this
draft. The Sacramento Kings had him rated as the No. 2 small forward for them
in the draft and extremely high on their board, they just couldn’t justify
taking him with the (No. 7 overall) pick. A new general manager, a new coach,
new ownership, how do you explain it to the press afterwards? It’s one of
the things I hate in this process. When you look at it the court of public
opinion drafts a lot of these guys in places where they shouldn’t be
drafted. Tony went up there and was by far and away the best player in both
of the workouts that he had and he went up against players they were strongly
considering with that pick and outplayed them. But how the draft turned out,
they ended up drafting a different player but I still believe in my heart of
hearts that he was the guy they should’ve taken, they just couldn’t justify
it.”
“You couldn’t have picked a better team for him (to be drafted by). It was
the best team for him. A close second would be Oklahoma City and a close
third would be San Antonio in terms of player development, recognizing talent
and putting talent on the floor in the right situations to be successful.
Tony is going to have every opportunity to be hugely successful in Chicago.
It’s going to be a matter of how much he wants it but he’s going to go
there and see how hard Derrick Rose works, how hard Joakim Noah works, Luol
Deng…it’ll be contagious. He’s already a hard worker so he’ll fit right
in. It’s going to be a fish to water with him.”
“I think he’s going to have an adjustment period. I think he’s going to
shoot the ball well because he’s going to get a lot of open looks because of
the talent around him and who he’s playing with. It’s usually between year
one and year two that a lightbulb goes on for a guy, so he’ll come home
after year one and play pickup ball with the pro guys and you won’t even
know this player, he’s going to be so much better than he is right now.
It’s just par for the course, it happens with every single player. Paul
George went to Indiana his first year, blended in and came home that summer
and was the best player on the floor every single day and then in year two he
takes off. Tony has the potential to do that, we just have to stay on top of
him and push him, because he doesn’t know how good he is, and he’s pretty
good.”
Marvin Lea, a fellow King graduate, has coached Snell since middle school
through his “eLEAte Sports” program. Here is what Lea had to say after
Snell was drafted.
“You can’t even explain the emotion, its the most excited I’ve ever felt.
(Chicago) is the best spot possible, that’s the spot we were hoping and
praying for. It was a good fit and they liked him from the very beginning a
whole lot. They brought the whole staff to watch him work out in LA, they
called to get extra background on him. You look at the roster and you see
there’s a place for him in Chicago.”
“Chicago is getting a real, real basketball player. A professional
basketball player. I know it sounds cliche but a lot of people aren’t
professionals. He’s one who is going to come out every single day, and he’s
going to outperform any expectations you have for him.”
And finally, here is what his older brother T.J. Snell had to say:
“Since we were younger his mind was always stuck on basketball. I’d go ride
my bike and he would stay back and play basketball, or he’d grab a
basketball and shoot it inside of a dumpster. It always worked out for him,
it was something he always wanted to do. I’m just glad to say that’s my
little brother and we share the same name.”
“I can’t even explain the feeling (seeing him get drafted). Coming from not
much, having family around was all we really needed. He’s so humble and
he’s like the coolest person you can talk to, he’s just funny and goofy.
He might be different on the court, but off the court Tony is the kindest
sweetheart you’ve ever met.”
“The crazy thing about it is Tony was in love with Michael Jordan. He knew
all of the Michael Jordan documentaries word for word. If we watched a
Michael Jordan movie we could not shut him up. Him going to the Bulls,
growing up that was his favorite team, it’s like wow this is really
happening. He just came back from Chicago and he couldn’t express the
feelings that he had playing in the same area that Michael Jordan was in.”
