I would give the edge to Sanchez, but was impressed by the progress Schwarber has made. Will both stick, only one, or none? Ben Badler: Sanchez definitely stays behind the plate. He doesn’t get enough credit for the progress he’s made defensively, going from a guy where pitchers were afraid to throw him breaking balls because they didn’t have confidence he would be able to receive them to a catcher who doesn’t let many balls get past him any more and also controls the running game, with an arm that ’s never been in question. Schwarber I’m less confident in, partly because I think his bat will force the issue faster than his defense will be ready, but he has made real strides with his footwork this season, which we saw on Sunday, even if the defense still isn’t ready yet. Marc (NJ): Is Eloy Jimenez the next big thing in the Cubs system? Does anyone besides Schwarber and maybe fellow teenager Torres have his kind of ceiling? Ben Badler: He’s a good one. His baseball skills weren’t as polished as Gleyber Torres’ when they signed that year as the top 2 prospects for July 2, but he’s athletic and had a chance to hit and hit with power when it all comes together. I don’t expect him to move as quickly as Torres, but the upside is a middle-of-the-order bat if it all comes together. John (Pittsburgh): Do you see the Cubs signing any more of the big name international free agents? Or will they all go to the Dodgers? Ben Badler: They’ve been one of the most aggressive teams over the last several years in the Cuban market. Given that they’re already over their pool (or will be once their players officially sign their contracts), they’re a good bet to come away with some of the Cuban talent that’s out there now. ------- BTW BA Prospect Hot Sheet: 6. Jen-Ho Tseng, rhp, Cubs Team: high Class A Myrtle Beach (Carolina) Age: 20 Why He’s Here: 0-1, 0.69, 2 GS, 13 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 HR, 3 BB, 11 SO, 1 HBP The Scoop: Though the Taiwanese righty is just 2-6, 3.91 through 14 starts this season, he has turned in his two finest efforts his last two times out. One of Tseng’s performances includes a tough-luck loss to Winston-Salem in which he allowed only one run on two hits in eight innings, but perhaps the best news is that his strikeout rate (7.6 batters per nine innings) is trending up in July. 16. Kyle Schwarber, c, Cubs Team: Triple-A Iowa (Pacific Coast) Age: 22 Why He’s Here: .375/.483/.750 (9-for-24), 4 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 5 BB, 10 SO The Scoop: The Cubs have seen fit to have Schwarber catch nearly every game since his demotion to Iowa. But Hernandez is another example of how the 40-man roster protection rules force teams to make decisions way too soon on young Latin players (largely because most of the top international prospects sign at age 16).
