[情報] Notes: Halter returns to Detroit
DETROIT -- Shane Halter couldn't be much happier to visit jail again.
OK, maybe his Spring Training remarks came back to haunt him a little.
Halter's comparison that leaving the Tigers for the Angels over the winter
was like a "get out of jail free card" in Monopoly was met with
good-natured ribbing from his ex-teammates in Detroit,
but it wasn't quite as well-received by the public.
As brutally honest as Halter became known for during his final seasons
in Detroit -- like when he said back in early September
that his "season was shot" -- he wasn't trying to be as brutal upon
leaving town.
"It wasn't that I was bashing the team,"
Halter said. "It wasn't the team or the organization.
I'm just saying it was a bad situation for everybody who
was in it. Losing was the part of being in jail. We couldn't get out of jail.
We couldn't stop losing. It had nothing to do with the players in that
locker room or the coaching staff or the front office at all.
It was not a derogatory remark at all, and I talked to Higgy
[Tiger outfielder Bobby Higginson] about it."
Manager Alan Trammell said he had no criticism of Halter,
and that last year's utility Tiger did everything that was asked of him.
And now that the Tigers opened the series Tuesday with the exact
same record as Anaheim, Halter can't help but feel glad for them.
"As many years as you lose in Detroit,
to be over there when they were winning,
I knew it would be a good time," Halter said,
"because our coaching staff was about as good as you can be during the losing.
I would've loved to see them when we were kicking people's butt.
That would've been a good time. But you move on, and my avenue's taken me
to Anaheim."
That avenue probably helped set up the Tigers' offseason splurge on free
agents. His two-year, $3.5 million deal arguably had been one of the best
examples of Detroit's bad contracts. The Tigers signed it expecting him to hold
down the starting shortstop's job for a couple of years until
Omar Infante was ready. Instead, Halter was a reserve by midseason.
Thus, Higginson's response to the get out of jail free card comment was
that Halter made a lot of money in jail.
"I did make a lot of money," Halter admitted with a smile,
"and I had a lot of good times here. And we did our fair share of losing.
But that's a good group of guys we played with."
Halter's essentially filling the same role with the Angels,
backing up three different infield spots. He didn't have to wait long
before making an appearance at Comerica Park.
He entered the game at shortstop in the bottom of the first inning when
David Eckstein strained his groin in the Angels' half.
