He showed good power and essentially kept the same walk rate he had posted at West Michigan in 2006. The big jump in strikeouts is a little worrisome, but if he can keep up with the walks and the power, his defense in the outfield (voted Eastern League’s Best Defensive Outfielder by Baseball America) should make him a very useful player for the Tigers. He’ll be one of the reasons I go to watch the Mud Hens in 2008, and I expect the Tigers will look his way if injuries leave them in need of an extra outfielder (after Maybin, of course). Matt Joyce is a player who benefits from the numbers I choose to show in these profiles. Most people won’t be wowed by his .257 average which also suppressed his on-base and slugging percentages. But if you note he drew walks at a better than average rate, showed good power and had almost half of his hits into extra bases there is a lot more room for encouragement and further improvement. Something else that has to be kept in mind about Joyce is after skipping a level he struggled mightily with AA pitching for two months. Once he caught on, though, the numbers came around quickly. He did cool off in August and also struck out a lot so there are things to work on, but he’s certainly one to watch in the system.
