For our first entry, we have a scouting report on 2008 MLB Draft prospect,
right-handed pitcher, Brett Jacobson of Vanderbilt University. This report was
filed this summer while Jacobson pitched for the Harwich Mariners of the
prestigious Cape Cod League. We’ve got the full report for you after the
jump…
Brett Jacobson, RHP, Harwich Mariners (Vanderbilt)
Pitch - Present Grade/Future Grade
Fastball - 55/60
Curveball - 40/45
Changeup - 60/60
Command - 50/50
Some ‘07 Cape video as a reference:
Physical Description - Tall, lean, very projectable. Long limbs with plenty of
room for filling out. Sloped shoulders and wiry strong. Perfect pitcher’s body
. Imposing from the mound. Looks like Brandon McCarthy.
Fastball - Velocity at 90-92, touching 93 but plays and looks to be more than
that. Gets downward plate, hitters are consistently late and seem to have
trouble picking it up. Late downward action and mixes in a two-seamer at
88-89 to left-handers. Commands well and knows how to change eye levels.
Loves/trusts his fastball. He’s a bat breaker with late pop.
Curveball - 79-81 MPH and throws it infrequently. Inconsistent but shows some
occassional hard bite. Lacks feel for it and mostly throws rollers up in the
zone. Potential there but it needs work. Can’t seem to find the release point
and doesn’t trust it. 11-5, small, short break.
Changeup - 76-78 MPH and uses it in any count. 15 MPH differential and he sells
it beautifully with arm speed and delivery. Works consistently down in the zone
and will go back to back pitches with it. Good fade away from left-handers and
has downward action. He trusts this pitch more than any other. Plus pitch and
looks like a strikeout pitch at any level.
Mechanics - Straight over the top delivery with no windup. Hides the ball
exceptionally well and has long arm action. Appears to have some effort in his
delivery but the ball comes out of his hand clean and jumps to the plate. Takes
advantage of his height and looks to be throwing downhill. Good balance and no
major mechanical issues. Similar delivery to Mike Mussina.
Notes - Shows legit mound presence and fear of no one. Goes after hitters with
fastballs and isn’t afraid to challenge. Has the aptitidue of a pitcher and
knows how to mix his pitchers in hitter’s counts. Carries himself with a
swagger and loves his stuff. Has an advanced feel for the game and situations.
Adjusted Overall Future Potential: 56
Present Group: P, Future Group: B-
Projected Role: 3rd or 4th Starter
Projected Draft Round: Sandwich to 2nd Round (Picks 30-50)
Overall Comparison: A cross between Carlos Carrasco and Mike Pelfrey
