Brandon Douglas SS R-R 6-0 185 Northern Iowa 8/27/1985
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Douglas and his twin brother Brett are red-shirt juniors
who teamed up as UNI’s double-play combination in 2008. Brandon returns as a
two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference shortstop, while Brett, who sat out the
2007 season, has stepped in at second. Brandon was on the board as a potential
top 10 pick in 2007 after hitting .339-3-29, but teams were concerned about his
sophomore-eligible status and the 27 errors he made at shortstop. He’s a very
good all-around athlete who was a 2,000-plus yards rusher in football as a high
school senior. Douglas’ best tool is his bat. He has a crisp line-drive swing
with some gap-to-gap power, projects to get stronger in the future and has good p
late discipline. He has average running speed and arm strength, but has
struggled making the routine play in the past and might be better suited for
second base in the future. He is the son of a college coach, so his
fundamentals and approach to the game are very sound.—ALLAN SIMPSO
UPDATE (5/15): Douglas enjoyed a bounce-back season this spring and was one of
the top players in the Missouri Valley Conference, hitting .396-10-60 with 25
doubles, while making only 13 errors at shortstop—less than half his 2007
total. Less worry about the draft and perhaps having his twin brother Brett by
his side contributed to Douglas’ success.—DAVID RAWNSLEY

Brett Anderson SS R-R 3-Jun 185 Bristol Eastern 9/3/1990
SCOUTING REPORT: Though not physically developed yet, Anderson has the lean,
athletic build to evolve into a legitimate third baseman or shortstop down the
road. In the short term, he’ll probably remain at shortstop as he has good
actions and soft hands, and his arm, his best present tool, has been clocked at
91 mph across the diamond. His high-energy approach is also well-suited for the
middle of the diamond. His lack of raw speed, his weakest tool, will probably
push him to a corner. But Anderson’s ability to ultimately move to third
largely depends on how his power emerges; he projects power as he has the quick
hands and good bat speed to drive balls. Having committed to Division-II power
Franklin Pierce (N.H.), Anderson is expected to be the next in line of top
shortstops that school has produced—following Shawn Hayes, a fifth-round pick
in 2005; Garrett Olson, a fourth-rounder in 2006 and Scott Savastano this
season.—ALLAN SIMPSON

Jared Gayhart OF/RHP L-R 3-Jun 195 Rice 10/29/1986
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Gayhart is a legitimate two-way talent. Though he has
played considerably more in right field than as a pitcher in his two seasons at
Rice, scouts say he has more upside on the mound than as a position player at
the pro level. In the rare opportunities when he has pitched, his fastball has
been a steady 88-91 mph and tops at 93. He also has the makings of an
above-average curveball. His long, loose, athletic body is also well-suited to
becoming a full-time pitcher. A year ago, he went 0-1, 2.16 while appearing in
just eight innings. Though he was in line to become Rice’s closer this season
coming out of fall practice, he was being used only sporadically to start the
2008 season. He hit .339-4-42 a year ago, earning regular duty in right field
only as Rice began conference play. Success seems to follow Gayhart. As a high
school quarterback, he led his team to the Texas 5-A football championship. He
also played in the Junior College World Series as a college freshman at San
Jacinto JC and in last year’s College World Series.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Gayhart had a carbon-copy junior season to his sophomore
campaign, both at the plate (.324-6-42, 45 BB) and on the mound—pitching just
enough and successfully enough (2-0, 1.59 in four outings) to keep teasing
scouts.—DR

Tyler Conn LHP L-L 5-11 180 Southern Mississippi 11/9/1985
SCOUTING REPORT: Conn is one of four Southern Miss pitchers selected in the
2007 draft who is eligible again this year, and yet he is the only one of the
quartet that has appreciably helped himself this season. Righthander David
Clark, a 13th-rounder a year ago, may have hurt himself the most when he was
hit by a line drive and suffered a broken femur bone in his thigh. He was lost
for the season. Conn dominated in a closer role for the Golden Eagles, saving a
national-best 16 games while going 1-0, 0.84. He also struck out 41 in 32
innings while walking only 10. A year ago, he saved just five games. Conn
reminds scouts of Atlanta Braves oft-injured lefthander Mike Hampton in both
body and pitching style. He has two average pitches, an 88-92 mph fastball and
changeup, and occasionally works in a curve. His competitive spirit makes him
ideally suited to be a closer. He should be one of the few college seniors
drafted in the first 10 rounds that will be picked on merit.—ALLAN SIMPSO

Alden Carrithers 2B L-R 5-10 165 UCLA 11/14/1984
SCOUTING REPORT: While UCLA had a very disappointing spring after beginning the
year No. 1 in one national poll, Carrithers was the one constant, hitting a
team-best .378 through mid-May. He also ranked among team leaders in runs (40),
RBIs (42), stolen bases (17) and on-base percentage, while playing solid
defense at second base. That performance is pretty consistent with what
Carrithers, a native of Oregon who played at UC Santa Barbara for two years
before transferring to UCLA, has done throughout his college career. He can hit
, runs well enough and generally puts the ball in play. Senior
lefthanded-hitting middle infielders from the West Coast who can play the game
have a history of getting drafted better than expected and Carrithers could be
the next in that line—particularly for a team like Oakland or Boston, which
values his strengths.—DAVID RAWNSLEY
