LUQUE SPEAKS OUT ABOUT IRURETA
LUQUE SPEAKS OUT ABOUT IRURETA

11th February 2003 -- When things go right players of a squad always have
enough discipline to keep problems internal. But when a team is not
functioning as well as it should be players usually have less restrictions
to speak to the press about their ideas and thoughts.
This time striker Luque spoke about the relationship he has with Irureta
and the incidents with marked the match against Osasuna, as part of the
crowd opposed the coach for his substitution of Makaay when the match was
level at 1-1. "With five minutes left we should go out to win, to attack
and not to defend. That’s why it surprised me that Makaay was taken off
as the match was level. But I am not the one in charge," the Catalan striker
said.
Luque himself brought some relieve to the team as until his appearance the
team performance had been quite poor and Diego Tristan had just been sent
off. But of Luque’s feet came the pass out of which Makaay scored the
equaliser and he was dangerous during the rest of the match.
Luque has only started three Liga matches this season and they all have
been away matches. But the supporters are screaming his name and "Qua
Salga Luque" has become a popular chant in the stadium. Luque himself
mentioned that his cool relationship with Irureta makes things difficult
for him. "I have never spoken to him in private since my arrival at
Deportivo and for sure I won’t get a conversation. If he doesn’t use me
it’s because he prefers to use other players. But for me it’s more
difficult every time to keep my form, although I still want to use every
possibility I get."
Irureta responded to the words of Luque and said on Radio Coruna SER that
"he doesn’t know about what he’s talking about, and he comes from a
team which was fighting against relegation last season (Mallorca). What
he should to is to play well. He’s a player and I am the coach and in
the 500 matches I have been coach of Primera Division teams I sometimes
am shocked that some players even don’t know the distance from the penalty
spot to the goal."
Every year it’s much debated whether Irureta will stay on at Deportivo or
not. "But if the supporters don’t want me anymore they can be relaxed.
Then there won’t be a problem," Irureta referred to a possible exit. "If
we don’t get the support of our fans it’s difficult to win against any
rival. But they pay the entrance fees and therefore have the right to do
what they wish to do."
Irureta is still convinced that he took the right decision when taking off
Makaay. "It seemed the best solution to me. We were taking a lot of risks
in midfield and Makaay hadn’t been playing very well. This was maybe
because it already was his fourth match in ten days. Capdevila had been
great when entering in previous matches, and only a miracle prevented him
from scoring the winner on Sunday."
Finally, Irureta referred to the error he said he had made during the
match against Osasuna. "I was wrong when making a certain substitution.
As I always take in account if a player has received a yellow card, I had
the idea during the break to take off Diego Tristan. I knew we run the
risk of being reduced to ten men and that was what happened. And that’s
why I regret I didn’t take him off during the break."

Some things lighten nightfall
and make a Rembrandt of a grief.
But mostly the swiftness of time
is a joke; on us. The flame-moth
is unable to laugh. What luck.
The myths are dead.
