Diamondbacks name scouting director
VP and special assistant to GM Gebhard given extension

WASHINGTON -- The Arizona Diamondbacks hired Tom Allison as their new
scouting director on Saturday and signed Bob Gebhard to a two-year extension
as vice president and special assistant to general manager Josh Byrnes.
Allison, a West Coast and Midwest scouting supervisor with the Milwaukee
Brewers, replaces Mike Rizzo, who left the Diamondbacks for a position with
the Washington Nationals. Allison also has experience in scouting and player
development with the New York Mets.
Allison joined the Mets' scouting department after five years as a Minor
League player and was part of the Double-A Binghamton Mets Eastern League
championship squad as a player/coach in 1994. He was promoted from
administrative assistant to assistant scouting director in November 1995 and
worked as area scouting supervisor for the Mets from 1997-99.
"He's efficient in all areas," Byrnes said of Allison between games of
Saturday's doubleheader against Washington at RFK Stadium. "He's a good
evaluator, he seems to have experience and knows how to run a good
department. He has the background and skills to be proficient in all those
areas."
One of nine candidates interviewed for the opening, Allison's stock rose
after Byrnes spoke with Jack Zduriencik, the Brewers' director of amateur
scouting, who hired Allison when he moved from the Mets to Milwaukee.
"Tom had excellent people give him very strong recommendations, certainly
[enough] to include him in the process," Byrnes said. "The more we checked,
and the interview itself, made it apparent he was the right guy."
Gebhard joined the Diamondbacks before the 2005 season after five years as
vice president and assistant general manager with the St. Louis Cardinals. He
was general manager of the Colorado Rockies from 1991-99.
