The shift in the Diamondbacks front office isn't just about the team's new
general manager, Josh Byrnes. It's about everyone around him.
Perhaps the biggest change is the size of the baseball operations department,
the group that helps Byrnes arrive at his decisions.
The five assistants Byrnes hired have varying degrees of experience, education
and skill sets. They all have worked with Byrnes somewhere, but none hesitates
to disagree with him.
"Generally as we go from issue to issue, I get a sense of those differing views
, which I think is good," Byrnes said. "We don't all see things the same way."
Byrnes' crew, which includes holdovers Bob Gebhard, Mike Rizzo and Jim
Cassandro, helps provide a multilayered dynamic to the decision-making process.
"All of the guys are bright and passionate," Byrnes said. "What makes the front
office work is people who are that invested and can come up with ideas and
troubleshoot ideas."
」
Here's a look at the five newcomers to the Diamondbacks' front office.
Peter Woodfork
Swampscott, Mass
The question seems to pop up a lot now for Woodfork. It's no surprise for
someone who is an assistant GM at 29.
Is being a GM the next step for you?
His answer: Time will tell.
For now, he's trying to soak in all he can as Byrnes' right-hand man.
A former infielder at Harvard, Woodfork graduated with a psychology degree and
took a job in the labor relations department in the commissioner's office,
where he became an expert in the collective bargaining agreement and served as
a liaison between the league and its teams.
That's how he got to know a young baseball executive named Theo Epstein, who, a
few months after being named GM of the Red Sox, hired Woodfork as director of
baseball operations and assistant director of player development.
Which is where he met Byrnes, who later convinced Woodfork to leave his h
ometown team to join him in Arizona.
Woodfork has carved out an expertise in all matters financial and technical,
including arbitration, contracts and the fine print in roster shuffling. But
he says he still has a lot to learn, including honing his player-evaluation
skills.
"It's definitely something I'm going to need to improve on in my game," he said
As for the future?
"I'll learn a lot in this job to see if I have those skills to be a good GM,"
Woodfork said. "Some day you hope that that's true. But I'm realistic. I'm not
going to step into something that I don't think I can do well."
